Toyota Land Cruiser 250 launched at 28L in Japan | How can we import to India without Toyota's help?

I was quie surprised on the pricing of Toyota Landcruiser 250 aka PRADO in Japan.
The SUV is priced at just 28L with 2.8L diesel+8 AT+full time 4WD+ADAS in 5s variant.

The top variant costs around 42L in Japan, further while looking at the website reveals more interesting products with wide variaty of body styles and great value compared to Toyota India pricing ( LC 300 is priced at about 2.6 CR in India)

The question is how can we import these products from Japan as they are available in RHD too, SIAM shows the tax structure for various imports including used cars.

Is there any option to import these Toyota cars without involving Toyota India?
Toyota India is having a very thin portfolio with exorbitant prices compared to their global lineup, be it a local product, CKD or CBU product

re: Toyota Land Cruiser 250 launched at 28L in Japan | How can we import to India without Toyota's help?

28 L (Prado) + 110% import Duty (30.8L) + Shipping fees (3-ish Lakhs) + Customs clearance and permissions agent fee (1 Lakh) = 62.8 Lakhs

+ 15% Road tax (Approx) = 72.2 Lakhs

Jeep Wrangler On-road price Delhi (Source Carwale) = 72.2 Lakhs
Discovery Sport price On road Delhi = 78 Lakhs

And these are before negotiations.
And these have a manufacturer warranty. And parts availability.

If Toyota launch a LC 250 at 70 odd lakhs in India, they will not have room for the Fortuner to grow, so expect it at around 1Cr.

Given Toyota's track record, this will not come below 1.1 Cr in India, So, 72L with all the hassle is worth this car. The day is not far when fortuner will be priced 75L and the buyers will wait in line for overpriced, feature, deficit, less comfortable SUV

Prado / LC brand is way stronger than Discovery Sport / Wrangler. if priced at 72/ 75L this product will own the segment

See that pricing of LC300 in Japan , starting at just 28L, in India it starts at 2.10 CR

I seriously doubt that number.

Can you please provide additional evidence?

Along with the hassles in taxes, RTO can deny registration/or can make you jump through hoops because the model is not present in India.

You can check the official website: https://toyota.jp/landcruiser300/gra...avi-menu_grade

LC300 starts at 5.1 million yen which is less than 28 lakhs and the ZX variant is around 39.5 lakhs. Vellfire starts at 35 lakhs.

I'm assuming there are significant practical issues in buying directly from Japan and importing it. Otherwise even if we consider a 200% markup for taxes and import charges for the ZX LC300, it's still far less than the Indian price.

It is still a good deal. What stops Toyota from doing the same? They could easily do it cheaper than this. This opens up lots of questions. Looks like Toyota's CBU pricing could be cheaper than their made in India pricing. How much are they really earning per car for their Indian models?

There is an update from an importer in Mumbai,

It will cost around 215% taxes including 100% customs duty as claimed , members can verify this and give a more clear picture.

So LC 300 base petrol will cost around : 28Lx 3.15 = 88L
LC 300 diesel top end : 43Lx 3.15 = 1.35 CR

Since the 2.8 engine is locally manufactured in Karnataka, they can easily do CKD assembly line here for Prado but I don’t think they will do it.
Probably Toyota India maybe thinking when you can re-badge and make big money why bother importing a vehicle.

I think people are forgetting to factor in the GST if it were to get to be legally sold in India, which would now make the price somewhere around 1.1 CR or so. This, I presume is the base model and the top variant could go upto 1.5 cr. This is in line with the pricing of Prado as well.

Since Toyota currently has their production line for local assembly of the IMV platform: Innova Crysta, Fortuner and CKD in the form of the Hilux.

Wait for the Fortuner to move to the TNGA-F platform and we can maybe expect Toyota to give us the Prado (fingers crossed).

re: Toyota Land Cruiser 250 launched at 28L in Japan | How can we import to India without Toyota's help?

I have a slightly different opinion here and possibly I'm biased in my expectations given I've been waiting for a TNGAF vehicle with bated breadth.

I've been following the Toyota releases in the US and other global markets and here is my speculation
  • Toyota has been trying very hard to broaden its model base and appeal
  • The TNGA-F gives it the underlying plumbing to modernize its SUVs and make them at a much lower cost
  • Their goal is to have a TNGA-F product in every price point - 4Runner, broad range of Land Cruisers (they restructured the Land Cruiser nameplate just to fill the price gaps), Lexus GX, LC 300 and finally the Lexus LX
  • Agreed this isn't TKM which seems to be run by people in retirement
  • Toyota knows the value of multiple butch SUVs in India
  • With TNGA-F they can assemble multiple products on the same line
  • The Fortuner went from an upright windscreen (like LC150) to a raked windscreen design in the last redesign
  • In the US the windscreen design is a big differentiator between the 4Runner and LC250 and I'm really hoping the same translates to the Fortuner and LC250 in India
  • The Innova was moved out to a different platform with an intention to keep the TNGA-F to SUVs and trucks
  • The Hilux was introduced to India as a halo product with a goal to replace it with the Champ (much lower price point)
Doesn't this all fit in or am I giving too much credit to a bunch of golfers in retirement in India?
