March 2024 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

NOTES:

1: Thanks to the team at Auto Punditz for sharing these sales numbers with us!

2: Only cars that sell 500+ units (and thus, the relevant ones) have been included in the gainers & losers chart.

3. These manufacturer-reported sales numbers are factory dispatches to dealerships. They are NOT retail sales figures to end customers.

Re: March 2024 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

For another month, Hyundai has only one vehicle in the Top 15 year-over-year (YoY), while Tata has two.
It appears that Hyundai is gradually losing its market share.
With the growing preference for SUVs, the sales of its popular hatchbacks, the Grand i10 and i20, have dropped to around 5,000 per month.
Currently, it’s just the Creta that’s holding Hyundai’s fort in the Top 15, and it desperately needs a partner.
The Exter seems to be a surprise package for Hyundai, still going strong in the Top 20.

When was the last time that the top selling car was a non Maruti? Creta's volume was twice as much as Seltos. Shows that brand value still matter to people. Also Scorpio is a surprise. Both these are bringing some fat profits for Hyundai and Mahindra respectively, that Maruti can only dream of despite its cost cutting measures and having a handle on Indian consumer's nerve. Premium-ness sells and kitna deti hai has become a smaller concern for buyers in 20L+ bracket.

Re: March 2024 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Seeing the Top 20 best sellers, the Tata Punch has delivered the real Punch to the competition to emerge at #1- Makes Tata proud. But we also had seen the Creta at # 1 once or twice during the pandemic months due to some sales inconsistencies as was evident. Trust the Punch at # 1 is genuinely there with its own inherent plus points. Tata has two entrants in the Top 20. The Creta has again now genuinely peaked at #2. But Hyundai has only three incumbents in the Top 20. The Punch's and Creta's YoY sales growths are impressive.

Mahindra's Scorpio at # 7, much above the Bolero sets another record for Mahindra. Usually the Bolero would be much ahead of any other Mahindra. And Bolero sales include those of the Bolero pick-up and all other variants. Mahindra has two incumbents. The Scorpio's YoY sales growth @ 72.4 % is the most remarkable of all.

We have TEN Marutis in the Top 20 list. The first four viz. Wagon R, DZire, Swift and Baleno interchange positions amongst themselves but are always in the Top 5 or 10. The Ertiga's YoY sales growth is remarkable.

As expected TKML has the Innova/ Hycross at # 15. The Kia sisters now trailing the chart at #18 and #20 were usually in the Top Ten!

Coming to the laggards, Citreon tops the list with a 50% YoY (-) southern drift in its sales, while Jeep, Skoda, MG, Renault, Nissan and Volkswagen too report such southward drifts in that order. We only hope that the tombstones and epitaphs for Citreon and Jeep (maybe others would follow too) would get delayed or even cancelled. But that's only if their managements sit up and take notice of their predicaments.

Re: March 2024 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

The Skoda and VW siblings have swapped places since last couple of months. Manual version of Virtus GT has definitely helped the sales of the model. It's the highest selling sedan after of course the Dzire. At the same time, Slavia sales seem to be sliding. VW and Skoda need to bring in new models especially their flagship and iconic vehicles launched globally to Indian shores at the earliest. They should not try to compete in the segments below which they are presently operating and lock horns with the Japanese, Indian and Korean manufacturers. They should also avoid the 50 lakh plus segments. The European siblings can sustain if they provide a assortment of vehicles and variants spread across the price bracket from 15 to 50 lakhs.

Re: March 2024 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Very interesting data. Delighted to see the Tata Punch topping the sales figures! Tata has been doing a wonderful job improving its products, sales, marketing and service - and it shows. Wonder how much of those volumes are contributed by the EV version - please check with your data source whether we can get separate model wise breakdown between the EV and the car. (I suspect it should be available since the EV is sold by a separate legal entity).

The Creta facelift addressed the one concern people had with it - it’s polarising looks. The car looks a lot better and that should help. Does anyone know what are the waiting lists on Hyundai products? Also with the Ranjangaon GM plant coming on stream, Hyundai should see additional capacity which may help it cement its #2 position.

Finally, why are sales of the Innova Crysta and Innova Hycross still clubbed? They are two completely different vehicles - please do push your source to give the split.

And one more thing. Am surprised to see that sales in March are lower than those in January. There used to be a time when March had record volumes due to depreciation - but that has not been the case for a couple of years starting with the BS6 transition and the Covid waves. Thought we would return to usual practice now - but that does not seem to be the case.

I think the Jan production is for March sales. Vehicles produced in March might get sold in April - May where numbers will be reduced. This is just my view looking at this chart.

Re: March 2024 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Honda City is dying.

This model, which more or less defines the Honda brand in India, is now the second worst selling mainstream sedan. The only sedan selling fewer numbers is the Maruti Ciaz - which is more than a decade old and hasn't even seen a mild refresh from the past 5 years. In contrast, the new generation City came out just a couple of years back.

Honda needs to reinvent itself for the Indian market.

Re: March 2024 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Few points from my side -

1. Top 4 make 80% and top 6 make staggering 92%! Not a good thing.
2. Next few years will be tough fight for spot 2 between Hyundai, Tata and Mahindra.
3. If we remove Suzuki twins from Toyota sales, their numbers will be not much, percentage will also go much below 5%.
4. End of Citroen, Nissan for India?
5. Honda is on Oxygen now, sales numbers are too low for them.
6. Jeep need to bring petrol quickly.
7. German twins are going down and down now, soon they will go below 5K together.

Overall good month but certainly not for all. Lots of worrying factors for many car manufacturer's.

Re: March 2024 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Are these 15 Superbs new CBU ones? If yes, looks like 100 might get sold out in few months.

Irony is, for Hyundai, Creta is selling 16k+ units while Verna only 1,700+ units, below Virtus. City is slowly and steadily disappearing.
