February 2024 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

NOTES:

1: Thanks to the team at Auto Punditz for sharing these sales numbers with us!

2: Only cars that sell 500+ units (and thus, the relevant ones) have been included in the gainers & losers chart.

3. These manufacturer-reported sales numbers are factory dispatches to dealerships. They are NOT retail sales figures to end customers.

Re: February 2024 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Based on first two months sales numbers for 2024, Creta FL seems to have eaten up Kia Seltos sales. Interesting to see how things turn up in coming months after Creta N Line launch tomorrow.

Re: February 2024 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Thanks for the awesome monthly updates!

  • Seltos sales have fallen off the cliff! Same for Carens too. Sonet sells quite below average for the segment. Last year, KIA saw almost no growth and because of it, majorly Hyundai Kia missed their annual indian target by 15k units. KIA slowly but surely is seeing their Indian performance decline!
  • Thar is ever increasing, almost equal to Seltos now, and consistently overselling Carens and even VW Skoda all model sales combined (of course! more than 3 decades in India, and VAG can't seem to understand market). Not to forget: Thar is almost 4 years old now with many price rises, feature deletions, and new rival entries! Thar was launched way back in middle of 2020! I find Thar to be the next Fortuner now in the long run in terms of ever-increasing sales
  • Creta, as expected is seeing massive sales, back to what it used to sell in 2019 times!
  • Grand Vitara is a huge success and comfortably taking Seltos' position in sales, both GV and Creta has been selling almost double of Seltos consistently for over a year even though Seltos has most features and interior quality in its segment!
  • Toyota Hyryder sells almost as much as Seltos and more than Elevate and VW twins combined! Hyryder is a succes in its own right. GV + Hyryder is reigning supreme in its segment just shadowing the Korean twins very closely
Fortuner massive sales- It sells almost as much as an Elevate and outsells City Amaze and Kushaq combined! for a 45-67 l (onroad) SUV, it's massive!
  • VW SKODA: Why they don't leave India is beyond me. Heck with their sales, even Ford India would laugh! Their resale value is taking a hit as usual too. A friend picked up a Taigun top-end 1.5 DSG 2021 37k km model Lucknow, in great condition for 13.5 l

Re: February 2024 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Everyone knew the FL Creta will eat into Seltos’s numbers, but this is almost madness. Not just the Seltos, but the VW/Skoda twins, the Elevate and others in the C2 segment are/will get impacted. The Grand Vitara seems to be the only exception.

This is some domination!

FL Creta and GV twins are on a roll. C- segment sedans are facing the heat even further. All of Verna, City, Slavia and Virtus have seen a decline in numbers.

Even though Hyundai is relatively doing well, thats only because of Creta. One thing to notice is how all other product of Hyundai is in the Top 10 MoM losers list. Five out of ten cars are from Hyundai in that list.

Re: February 2024 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Hyundai's Exter meant to upset Punch is now off the radar. I feel the no.1 reason for its relatively average performance is its comical look, same thing that doomed the Santro. The top glasshouse area and the bottom part looks like it belongs to two different cars. The back looks hideous ( too much glass).

And have you seen anyone who sits in the Exter? They are not sitting high up, they are all below the window line, as if they have sunk in the car. And the guts they have to pluck the same interior and even the Seats (!) from their hatchback.

Another trend over the years I have noted is that our Indian car companies have fought back and are now leaders in the segments they thrive ( Punch in compact SUV, XUV 700 in SUVs, Nexon in mid compact SUV , Thar in lifestyle etc.) The only segments where the other car companies are leading are the ones in which Indian car companies have no presence ( Creta class in particular). If Mahindra or Tata brought in some product to cover this crucial part of the market , then I see no reason the market will tilt in their favor.

Do note, I mean a ground up product to cover the Creta class, NOT the current approcah that Tata is doing elongating the existing Nexon platform to create a Curvv. The Creta will be safe, if Tata or any other OEM tries to adapt their compact platform and stretch it to cover a segment higher. Cheap it maybe, but success I think not.

Re: February 2024 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Honda Elevate numbers are steadily decreasing. MY take is they will settle at 3000 units for sometime till they get an update with minor features. Really sad to see Honda dying a slow death due to lazy indifference from the company. A hybrid engine instead of the NA one in the Elevate would have done wonders.

Re: February 2024 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Electric 2 and 3 wheelers growing only 25% to 50% is a concern. With such a small base the growth in percentage terms is miniscule. Tata has dropped its market share from 83% to 68%, while growing only 25% YoY.

Overall the EV adoption isn't going at the brisk pace everyone was anticipating. The drop in new car prices (leading to drop in resale values) along with lack of easy repairs and shortage of cars under 20 lacs with good charging speed (50 kw +) is contributing to this sluggish growth.

Don't see how all these factors will be addressed in the future. China seems to be an exception rather than a norm as far as EV adoption goes in global PV industry. I won't be surprised if governments scale back the EV adoption timelines and ICE vehicles are allowed to continue to be sold for the next 2 to 3 decades at least.
