Re: Rumour: Skoda could bring back diesel engines in India with next-gen Superb

New Skoda Superb to be an import only as local assembly unviable.

Clearly, Skoda and Volkswagen are shutting down CKD operations in India. This also means that the likes of the Octavia, Superb and Kodiaq will be too pricey.

They're exploring a partnership with an 'Indian' automaker to make their India 2.0 strategy work. The flipside of this is that they may pull the plug on India if their volumes don't shift to a higher gear. Sincerely hoping that they achieve success with the upcoming sub-4 meter compact SUV. If that doesn't deliver solid volumes, all bets are off! If VW and Skoda go, the Indian car market will have very limited options for those who love solidly built, beautifully designed fun cars.

Cheers,

Jay

In addition, it is really sad that they have discontinued the Jetta and the Passat in India. I have owned both and they are fantastic vehicles. I would choose a Passat over most luxury cars.

Re: Rumour: Skoda could bring back diesel engines in India with next-gen Superb

I still remember when Skoda launched the Superb in 2009. It made the Merc C/E & Audi A4/A6 look stupid, with its killer tech & killer price etc (19-20L I think, compared to 27L for the C/3). They swept the market.

This announcement is a dud in my opinion. CBU prices will touch 70L for a car that is too similar to the 2021 model that cost 40-45L. Add to it, Skoda already struggles to manage after sales issues. They will be completely out of depth on a low volume car.

The car wont sell-- given how good the Camry is, it'll pick the limited demand in this segment. Skoda & VW group need to decide whether they want to be in the Indian market at all, instead of cutting off their limbs one at a time.

Despite the market moving away from sedans, IMO if they sold the Superb at ~30-33L, it'll do very well. This price is achievable for Skoda -- they sell for 20-30L in other countries (despite high mfg costs in Europe).

Volkswagen & Skoda, both operate like a Govt. enterprise in India. I still dont get it why they are so resistant to change. It has been the case from the time we had Polo. The competition outshines in one facelift, let alone a generation change.

Look at VW Taigun & Kushaq at launch vs look at them now. 3 years and hardly anything has been done to it, while Creta and Seltos are leagues ahead is tech and quite close in terms of driving dynamics. No wonder the Koreans sell 2.5x of Germans.

At odd 60L, does the Superb really make any sense?

This one step hesitantly in and other step turned side ways has always been the case with the German twins. And then they talk about over engineered products?

Maybe if they actually stop treating India like a third world country and actually do the things right, play the cards right, their 1B dollar investment would be worth more than the trashy quarterly special editions they keep doing.

Is this sufficient to assume that the new Kodiaq will also be an import instead of a CKD? If that’s the case, then a Q5 makes more sense, given that Audi as a brand has a better chance of surviving than VW/Skoda.
