Re: Modern car trends that you find aesthetically unappealing

My list -

1. Weird, quirky designs like Hyundai, really not a fan of it, Tuscon, New Creta, are the best examples.
2. Big touch screens like MG Hector. Soon they will have 32 inch LED I guess in the car.
3. Big LED strip in the Front like New Verna, New Harrier, etc. IMHO it ruins the look.
4. Tech look for a car. I don't like cars like Kia Carens for the same reason.

Now we have budget hatchback, premium hatchback, compact sedan, sedan, crossover, compact SUV, SUV, MUV, and I am very sure that I missed at least one segment.

Also the whole trend of cars becoming larger, when logic dictates that congested roads and cities should cause an increase in the sale of smaller cars. We have roads becoming more congested by each passing day, and cars which dont help in reducing the square footage occupied (while in traffic on said roads, as well as in parking).

So true, I have been preaching this for years. As an ex-sedan owner I really hope this SUV and wannabe SUV dominated market won't completely stop new designs in this segment. Mahindra and Kia clearly prove a "No Sedan" portfolio is possible. And just to be clear sedan and compact(sub 4m) sedan are two different entities. Can't name one decent looking compact sedan.

Another trend that is getting out of hand is countless number of variants for a single car. I am in favor of various engine and gearbox option. But slapping a sunroof and calling it XMS is absurd. They make it more complicated by adding/deleting a feature which might be present in the lower variant. Also the dual tone paint should be treated as a customization not as a variant.

Re: Modern car trends that you find aesthetically unappealing

I personally do not like when manufacturers give the car a half LED - half halogen set up, I just fimd it weird and unappealing.

Why not a full led or full halogen setup?

Re: Modern car trends that you find aesthetically unappealing

Talking purely of aesthetics, I don't like manufacturers not painting the rear bumper in body color in most compact suvs. I don't think it makes them look rugged, instead it makes them look cheap as it fades over time

Re: Modern car trends that you find aesthetically unappealing

1. Messed up variant distribution. Getting ridiculously complicated to zero in on a variant that meets your needs
2. Sealed LEDs that aren't bright
3. Placing headlamps low down
4. Single reversing lamp- looks so so cheap
5. Launching automatics without an armrest
6. Wipers that need to be in a "service" position
7. Wiper stalks on the right and indicator stalks on the right
8. Missing weight sensors on seats triggering the seatbelt warning
9. No physical copies of manuals
10. Low profile tyres and lack of a spare

Re: Modern car trends that you find aesthetically unappealing

1. Gaping grills. Ex: BMW, Hyundai
2. Headlights on bumpers and evicting fog lamps in name of cost savings.
3. Huge ugly rear plastic bumpers/inserts in bumpers
4. Connected tail lights. I loved the earlier standard - 1 at each end with a prominent high mounted stop lamp
5. Absolutely rubbish LED headlights - all talks about safety only seem to concentrate on structural rigidity and airbags while ignoring headlights. Some will argue that you can go after market for the latter but not the former. However why take a myopic view?
6. Unnecessary cuts and creases on body work - BMW, Hyundai
7. Smallish front indicators located way below on bumpers or next to bright headlights+DRLs that you cannot even see them.

Re: Modern car trends that you find aesthetically unappealing

My top irritation is with headlights integrated into bumper. Not only does it look like an afterthought in many cases, but one accident at night on highway ensures you are crippled till morning.

Other design irritations:
1. Tube light LED bar connecting headlamps
2. Fake dual exhausts, that too in chrome
3. “Aggressive” grill - whatever that means! Loudmouthed is usually inelegant.
4. Plush door handles. eg:XUV 700
5. Cuts and folds on side panels. Audi A6 or 5 series from 1998 still looks elegant. That must be saying something to these “modern” designs. If you want to fold and showcase, practice origami.
6. Missing foglamps. Worse is replacing those with scoops. Not sure what to make of small foglamps like in Hycross.
7. Floating screen that rises much above the dash. Compass has this nicely done. Seltos also to a certain extent in that it doesn't just jump up in the middle.

Re: Modern car trends that you find aesthetically unappealing

1. On the mechanical front, having no option of a big naturally aspirated petrol sedan. Someone like Tata and / or Mahindra can exploit this space once again. Like a 2000cc / 6 speed.

2. Headlamps of certain cars like Baleno. Too deadly for oncoming traffic. I am naming only the Baleno here as it is the fastest night car on our roads.

3. The all-new Hyundai Verna. I hope that no other manufacturer follows that trend with any of their future cars.

4. The use of chrome must be limited. Some cars have too large grilles and all of them in chrome. Gaudy.

Re: Modern car trends that you find aesthetically unappealing

1. Tiny engines slapped on with turbochargers. It's almost like making a frail old person run a marathon by injecting steroids whether they like it or not.

2. Massive exteriors and heartbreakingly cramped interiors. I sat in a Fortuner once and just could not digest the humongous proportions of the car vs the rabbit hole interiors. Just give me some space, dammit!

3. Inconsiderate and inhumane headlight high beam designs. Some manufacturers might as well just fix lasers on their cars and call it a day! And of course they're somehow not able to design the headlamps in such a way that the high beams don't point straight out front and just that the angle is less acute compared to the low beam.

4. Everyone has said this. LED strip lights! I had a Nexon EV trail me yesterday night for a good distance and I felt the urge to let him pass just so I didn't have to look at the disgusting sight.

5. A declining trend in the fuel efficiency of cars. Single digit figures have become so common nowadays, especially at a time when everyone is pondering over when the fuel crisis will come barging through the door.

6. Saved the worst for the last. Faking value by having unnecessary and mostly unused tech features in low trim models and omitting safety features like full cabin airbags! I don't want to operate my touchscreen air conditioner in heaven after going splat on a parked truck!

I'm sure more points would arise with time but these are the ones off the top of my mind at the moment

Re: Modern car trends that you find aesthetically unappealing

My List:

1. Too many chimes and warnings, just causes irritation and confusion.
2. Over sized grills
3. Some OEM LED headlights are quite bad in lighting up the road
4. Downsizing of engines for FE
5. General cost cutting in expensive cars.
6. Ownership experience is declining (mostly sales)

Re: Modern car trends that you find aesthetically unappealing

My list would include:

1. Gloss finish on dashboard (specially the gloss finish on dashboard top) as it causes unwanted reflection and when facing the sun directly, the reflection on the windshield becomes a daytime nightmare.
2. Moving every possible things to touch based operations and everyone is jumping into this bandwagon from Audi A6 to Tata Nexon.
3. Unusably small front armrest which is just there to fill the brochure than actual usage.
4. Low profile tyre on average Indian car. Make it an optional accessory for cars that has high performance engine for its weight.
5. Connected headlight and taillight.
6. Headlight with light temperature of above 5000K making it completely unusable in rain or fog and the biggest problem with these LED lights is that it can not be replaced in after market (Honda City ZX).
7. Subscription based features: We paid the full price of the car then why to pay a rent on my own property.
8. Reverse light on only on side.

Re: Modern car trends that you find aesthetically unappealing

Excellent and agreeable points from my fellow members.

I would like to add :

1) The crazy upward trend in car prices. No they are definitely not worth the extra cost because of "MoRe GaJeTs and SaFeTy AiDs". Those cost pennies at the economies of scale that cars are being sold at. You probably wouldn't find much difference in cost between an Android headunit today and a Bluetooth dumb system from 5 years ago.

2) Terrible distribution of features in various trim levels. It's always a case of the stuff you actually want is only available in the trim above the one you want and paired with a lot of stuff you don't want for a price you ordinarily wouldn't pay. Usually the top trim. For example rear windshield defogger and wiper. I think the market is mature enough and we have pretty much 100% local manufacturing, to allow for custom trims from the factory. You have your base trims which are readily available or you wait for your perfect version. Customers are anyways forced to wait for a month+ due to genuine or artificial scarcity of cars so why not make it a win win situation.

3) Car manufacturers making it harder to repair/replace parts or making them more prone to failure damage.

4) Absolutely shameless and cheap cost cutting or as we call it "chindigiri" by manufacturers especially in newer models or facelifts. All this in expensive or should I say mid range cars. I'm taking about stuff like removing illumination from window switched or deleting boot lights, not just the use of poor quality materials.

Re: Modern car trends that you find aesthetically unappealing

Lights set far down into bumper. I can't make eye contact with such cars.

Who thought this was a good idea? I can't recall a single car where this kind of setup looks good.

Re: Modern car trends that you find aesthetically unappealing

- too much of LED DRL and angry bird eyebrow design Headlights
- Dual tones (Even the OEM offering look like a cheap paint job)
- Too many versions (every model has atleast 20 version (low, mid, low-mid, top, top ++) X (petrol NA, Petrol Turbo, diesel, hybrid) X (Manual, TC/CVT, DCT)
- Hiding prices behind the version spread (they will have one version without the basic feature for marketing purpose, they market XUV starting 13L, but 80% of the owners pay over 24L on road )
