Re: Modern car trends that you find aesthetically unappealing

1. Lack of backlit power window switches & central lock switch even on 10L plus cars.

2. Removing the fog lamps in name of cost cutting. The car manufacturers think that what holds good for majority of country, holds good for everyone. Southern parts of country may never require a fog lamp, while you're literally blind in northern part of the country in winter without the fog lamps.

3. Space saver tire.

LED headlamps (doesnt help during rains), DRLs (remembering age old ranting why lights during daytime &#128512, all fancy features like rain sensing wipers, auto headlamp, follow me home etc when you can't make safe cars.

Re: Modern car trends that you find aesthetically unappealing

My list would be -

1. Subscription for basic functions like remote start

2. Super large infotainment screens -- literally have to stretch to access the options on the right side of the screen. Not to mention the fatigue that it adds to during night driving.

3. Infotainment touch pad interface in some vehicles

Re: Modern car trends that you find aesthetically unappealing

Some of the things I hate in new cars

1. Connected tail lamps
2. Touch screen control for a/c
3. Sunroof compulsory on top models
4. Powered tailgate - sometimes you are packed to the brim and powered tailgate doesn’t work
5. All black interior - maybe easy to maintain, but in 44 degrees north india heat, it’s not practical.
6. High window sils - especially in Hyundai and Merc. Design taking precedence over practicality
7. Low profile tyres
8. Average Ac to increase mileage - Honda cars and VW group cars

Re: Modern car trends that you find aesthetically unappealing

Beyond the comprehensive lists on this thread:

1. ADAS features like lane keep assist & auto braking. These are a pain when one needs to occasionally straddle lanes, drive slightly closer to a vehicle or drift to one edge to avoid hazards, and are downright dangerous in Indian conditions. I had a first hand experience a few weeks back when driving a rental Volvo sedan in the US.

2. Tiny windows and side mirrors. Safety is proportional to Visibility in my book.

3. Auto start stop. Unnecessary complexity, poor implementation (Mahindra, cough cough..) and downright irritating in daily use.

4. Low sidewall profile tires. They might look good but have terrible ride quality.

Re: Modern car trends that you find aesthetically unappealing

Here is my list, compiled from the front to the rear.
1. Massive front grills (MG Hector)
2. Tube lights on the bonnet (all present gen Tata cars and the Hyundai Verna)
3. Massive headlamps: I hate huge headlamps of the XUV700 and the creta
4. Deleting fog lamps
5. Huge alloys with low profile tyres
6. Putting wheel caps over alloys in the name of reducing air resistance or whatever. Makes filling air so difficult.
7. Too many screens and lighting inside the cabin.
8. Fuel lid being connected to the central locking. This makes a security risk because I have to unlock all doors and boot at the petrol pump if the fuel lid is to be opened.
9. Connected tail lamps and single reverse lamp.

Re: Modern car trends that you find aesthetically unappealing

My two cents on this topic:

1. LED headlamps which hurt the eyes of oncoming traffic and pedestrians but barely illuminate the road. I mean how difficult it is in 2024 to build a well functioning headlamps!

2. Sunroof.

Yes indeed it spoils whole front look of car, it looks more like minibus with multiple lights (DRL, Headlamps and Foglamps). It seems in future they will have continuous running lights from headlamps to taillamps

Re: Modern car trends that you find aesthetically unappealing

LEDs especially the one's retrofitted without any testing/compatible reflectors. Mainly because most of us dont know how to use high beams. We keep high beam on within the city even on brightly lit roads and also use it to intimidate other drivers into giving way. Since LEDs are here to stay they should atleast make it mandatory for manufacturers to introduce ADB.

Idle start/stop. Seems pretty useless and I'd rather not save the fuel (if any actually gets saved) and suffer through the jerks and hustling to get the engine started again when I need to move. It also causes variations in cooling since it is meant to only start again if the temperature rises over a certain threshold - I'd rather keep the temperature constant. All in all, the idea is good on paper but irritating in real life IMO.

Re: Modern car trends that you find aesthetically unappealing

When cars have a digital driver's display but no way to show apple carplay/android auto based navigation on it.I think this might be a small nuance to most but it really grinds my gear.

The car can display google maps, but wont mirror it on the screen right in front of the driver!!

And whats up with Auto Start Stop, autonomous aids, and auto braking not being saved with my other car preferences. Why must i switch them off every time in start the car. Its annoying.

Re: Modern car trends that you find aesthetically unappealing

Here are a few areas that I have come to dislike aesthetically in modern cars:

1. White color interior which looks great during delivery, but in a few months becomes a huge pain to clean and keep stains off.
2. Touch based buttons for music system / air con and now on steering wheels! Miss the good old buttons with the tactile feel.
3. Having basic safety features like Rr. Wiper / Rr. Fog lamps only on the top end variants. Also, in some variants, these are asymmetrical with the reversing lamp on only 1 side.
4. Space Saver tire which makes the vehicle look very odd / disproportionate when you have a flat tire.

Re: Modern car trends that you find aesthetically unappealing

1. Screens - More screens in the car, higher the distraction for driver. Infotainment systems are getting bigger and bigger. Instrument clusters moved away from dial's to screens. Now front passenger gets a screen too. In no time we will start seeing cars having flowing screens starting from A pillar on right to Left .

2. Connected Light bars - According to me, this is completely useless and looks ugly. The latest verna for example. No offence to owners, but the connected DRL's make the car look bad rather good.

3. Connected car features - Specifically option to start AC remotely. This is very hazardous. Imagine a car parked under sun for hours and the AC gets switched on without properly ventilating the cabin. I do not have to explain the health hazards!

4. Sunroof - This is definitely a useless feature in our country. We all know how it is being used here. We've seen a number of instances where kids peep out of it. As of today, panoramic sunroof is the norm. What is next? moonroof (entire roof being glass like teslas). What's the use?

5. ADAS - L2 is a definite no. I don't want my car to do things for me. No level of automation can replace a human brain. With the road discipline people follow here, L2 ADAS poses more danger than easing a drivers life. Moreover, we've seen a number of videos where people just take lane keep assist for granted and just take eyes off road while on highway. No need to explain how dangerous that can end up.

It is sad that both consumers and manufacturers lack understanding what evolution actually means. I hope they understand sooner that modernizing a car isn't just adding features of what's being offered in European countries, they need to think what works and what doesn't work for India!

Re: Modern car trends that you find aesthetically unappealing

One of the trends which I feel not good about is the shrinking of both front and back bumpers. In earlier days, there used to be a good couple of inches of bumper on the front and back and impact of two wheelers etc. were taken on the bumper without affecting the body. Today the body is in line with the bumper and there is hardly any bumper thickness to absorb the impact. Hope manufacturers give some attention to it.

Re: Modern car trends that you find aesthetically unappealing

The Cars nowadays have got too much make up:

1) Chrome every here and then:
Makes a car looking like an overly decorated Truck.

2) Long DRLs : As in KIA Seltos, Nexon EV etc resemble a sweet shop decorated on Diwali.

3) Extra Large Touch Screen covering every possible control :
Just a huge Glass in the cabin.

4) Digital Speedometer console :
Resembles to a Video Game

5) Black Roof Wrap : This stuff neither looks appealing when the dust sits on this nor it is easier to clean and mantain.

6) Huge Front Grill : large grills and over done Rangoli on that with chrome.
