January 2024 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

NOTES:

1: Thanks to the team at Auto Punditz for sharing these sales numbers with us!

2: Only cars that sell 500+ units (and thus, the relevant ones) have been included in the gainers & losers chart.

3. These manufacturer-reported sales numbers are factory dispatches to dealerships. They are NOT retail sales figures to end customers.

- PV segment achieved a new all-time high in January, retailing 3,93,250 vehicles & surpassing the previous record set in Nov'23. However, a persistent concern lies in high inventory levels, which still hover in the 50-55-day range, posing a challenge for auto dealers.

- 2W Demand Stays Strong: Demand for 2Ws remains steady, fuelled by continued strength in the rural market. This segment is likely to benefit from the government's good crop production estimates and continued support for the rural economy.

- Average inventory for PVs ranges from 50-55 days.

- Average inventory for 2Ws ranges from 10-15 days.

Re: January 2024 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Maruti wrests back its market share with a cumulative increase of around 62000 vehicles over December sales. Back at 42%. The Baleno takes the lead as the largest selling car. Most of the range are doing well except sadly for the Jimny which seems to be what many had predicted.

Hyundai does a repeat of January 2023, after losing the second spot to Tata at the end of the year, both in 2022 and 2023. The two are always breathing down each other's necks, but the difference of 3500 between them seems to be a steady number. The Curvv might change that in the days to come.

Tata is having a dream run with the Punch taking the lead over Nexon, both at a mind-blowing 17000+. All cars doing good, the new designs have been accepted well. The price cut on the EV segment of the Tiago and Nexon should help improve numbers. If only, they can sort out their QC and niggles. Sigh!

Mahindra rules the SUV world and is the unbeatable champion, the Scorpio doing wonders and the XUV700 still doing great numbers.

KIA has doubled its December numbers and come to its regular 23000, while Toyota holds steady. Nothing much to say about the remaining manufacturers, as they are just pulling along.

Re: January 2024 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Thanks for sharing the report Aditya.
Few observations -
  • Why figures are quite low for Kia? Toyota is almost at neck level of them .
  • City is losing its glory. The competition has grown in size and technology, quite literally.
  • Just like FIAT packed up their retail sales within a decade, Jeep too is following the footsteps. I definitely not wish for that though .

Re: January 2024 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

What's with Skoda's low numbers all of a sudden?

Normally VW and Skoda's numbers are neck to neck, and this difference is significant.

Especially for the Kushaq, which has been Skoda's breadwinner so far.

Re: January 2024 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Some observations:
1. Toyota and Mahindra are doing extremely well. Toyota has a very balanced portfolio and may be highest average sales price/ margin per vehicle.
2. Tata seriously needs to improve it's service and do a proper QC before a vehicle reaches it's customer.
3. Kia needs to improve the chassis stability of it's vehicle. I am commenting on this as recently, I drove Carens and Seltos for test drive and both the car feels like a boat at high speeds and unstable body shell.
4. Maruti is doing everything right except for the high end cars they also need to work on the quality and chassis. Hyundai has already done this as evident from New Verna and Creta 2024.
5. VW and Skoda needs to introduce new models and facelifts and also needs to improve the service.
6. MG needs to bring it's Hybrid vehicles to India with more powerful engines.

Re: January 2024 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Few Observations:

1. The top 4 constitute a whopping 81.5% of total dispatches and 81% of retail sales.
2. The top 6 constitute a whopping 93.4% of total dispatches and 91% of retail sales.
3. The last car in the Top 20 has dispatched more than 7K cars. Absolute crazy growth for famous cars.
4. Punch punching above Nexon due to demo cars I believe. Things should get back to normal in the next couple of months.
5. Shocking numbers from Jimny. MSIL continues its flop show for good-performance cars.
6. Wonder what promoted such a big drop for Kushaq and Taigun. Both cars has only 50% dispatch when compared to last month.
7. With Exter, Hyundai just wants a pie in that segment. They will never compromise on higher returns with expensive cars and will prefer losing out the perception battle to Punch.
8. Anyone who buys Ciaz needs a bravery award - Enough Said!
9. MSIL has been consistently dispatching close to 500 Invicto. So, not a bad idea at all considering Gloster sells one-third of it and Maruti leapfrogged into 30L car without spending too much.
10. Looks like I20 has more takers than Altroz.

Damn, Baleno almost touching 20k. Here I thought, the induction of Fronx was gonna eat it into its sales but seems the induction of Fronx is actually promoting sales of both models.

Massive decline in Seltos numbers. I wonder why? Was Kia plant partially operational or so?

Re: January 2024 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Still don't understand why Maruti called back Ritz and introduced Ignis. I think Ritz was a decent car and it was selling better than Ignis.

Still it has a huge demand in used car market.
