Mahindra order backlog reduced to 2.26 lakh units

Mahindra has managed to reduce the order backlog significantly. The carmaker has 2.26 lakh open orders for its SUVs as of February 1, 2024, down from over 2.86 lakh at the end of October last year.

Mahindra has ramped up production to clear the pending orders. The carmaker is producing around 49,000 units per month, which has reduced the waiting period for some models.

The order backlog for the XUV700 has reduced by 50% from 70,000 open orders to just 35,000. The company claims that the average waiting period for the SUV is now down to 2-3 months. It receives around 7,000 new bookings for the XUV700 every month.

The Scorpio and Thar account for over 75% of the order backlog. The pending orders for the Scorpio N and Scorpio Classic stand at over 1.01 lakh, with the waiting period for the Scorpio N at around 8-9 months.

Around 71,000 Thars are yet to be delivered. The model also has the highest waiting period, with the Thar RWD commanding a one-year waiting period.

Mahindra has over 10,000 pending orders for the Bolero and 8,000 open bookings for the XUV300 and XUV400.

According to the company, booking cancellations increased to around 10% between November 2023 and January 2024. Cancellations were down to less than 8% in January 2024.

Re: Mahindra order backlog reduced to 2.26 lakh units

Looking at the trend, I wonder if Mahindra would launch the RWD version for its 5door Thar. They might just launch the 4WD version and capitalise on the non stop craving for Thar.

Just saw a render by SRK design. If the 5door version looks as good as that- then we might see the waiting times go well past current levels..

Looking at the January car sales figures for Marazzo, i think its the high time Mahindra should seriously think about converting the Marazzo production line for Thar 3/5 Door models.

Mahindra cuts their losses pretty fast.
They are sticking with it because the MPV segment is important to them, it is more likely that Marazzo will evolve to an SUV body style product and hence the production line is kept on.

They are prudent investors too.
Their marketing is stronger with the waiting times and cancellations are barely touching the double digits. The Hybrid/EV confusion in the market would further delay the investments in the current scenario.

It would be rather wise to expect investment into 5door Thar (most profitable product ever) and slow electrification of the line with VW components.

Received from a dealer via WhatsApp. Why are they giving discounts if there is a huge backlog?

Not at all surprising. As this is the famed strategy played by most manufacturers called the 'LIE' strategy. Backlogs, bookings etc. are part of this strategy.

Are they expecting a demand shift when the Thar 5 door gets launched?

2024 apparently is going to be a tumultuous year globally, with war raging on the East in Ukraine & the Middle-East in Israel. There are talks (hopefully not) of nuclear war if NATO allows Ukraine to join and retaliation from Iran because of Israel bombing Iran's embassy in Syria. Also evidenced by Billionaires lapping up private islands and building nuclear proof self-sustaining bunkers.
All this 'allegedly' being fuelled by the deep-state/Democrats to prevent Trump from coming to power.

Sorry for the OT blabber. Coming back to India, Politicos & CEO's at the highest level know that things are going to be quite shaky in the coming months and have started giving discounts on even high-selling models like the XUV700 and ScorpioN.

There's a nice saying from the old wild west of yore, 'Buckle up Dorothy coz Kansas is goin bye-bye".

Re: Mahindra order backlog reduced to 2.26 lakh units

In April such sponsored advertisement was given by dealer multiple time.
We may see some correction in the pricing soon.

Re: Mahindra order backlog reduced to 2.26 lakh units

Has anyone spoken to a Mahindra dealership about it? My conversations with dealerships in Gurgaon a few weeks ago hadn't led to any discounts being offered for the Scorpio N.
