Maruti Suzuki has launched a new special edition of the Fronx called the Velocity Edition.



The Fronx Turbo Velocity Edition is available in three variants – Delta+, Zeta and Alpha. The special edition gets 16 accessories worth Rs 43,000.



The Turbo Velocity Edition is equipped with a grey and black exterior styling kit, door visors, ORVM cover, headlamp garnish, body side moulding, illuminated door sill guard, red dash designed mat, NeXCross Bordeaux sleeve seat cover, 3D boot mat, spoiler extender, wheel arch garnish, front grille garnish and an interior styling kit with carbon finish.



The Fronx is available with two engine options. These include the 1.2-litre petrol engine that makes 89 BHP and 113 Nm, paired with a 5-speed manual and 5-speed AMT and a 1.0-litre turbo-petrol unit that puts out 99 BHP and 148 Nm that is available with either a 5-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic. The Turbo Velocity Edition is only available with the latter of the two engines.

It was a long long time since Maruti came up with such an edition. Not sure what to make of this. Recently they had announced that it was a best seller getting max number of bookings in record time. And now this special edition with so many free accessories. It appears like they want to keep Fronx in the news to ensure steady sales. Or could there be a chance that they are trying to clear out all older stock, which was not conforming to the BNCAP tests? There have been rumors of Fronx being tested by the agency and might get respectable ratings. Only thing that should have been different is the name. Everything is else seems to be sorted for a typical Indian buyer.
Even Toyota is coming up with Taisor next month, the name is much more catchy as compared to Fronx, lets see what success they get.

Whats with Indian Auto Manufacturers and their special edition names, I mean just dole out the original model with a sticker job and different quality seat covers but give a name which kind of gives an impression of better mechanicals and performance. Maybe I can get the detailing done at any store and name Turbo Momentum edition.

Not sure what the intention is - whether to expand the existing Fronx line up or to clear the stock with the usual gimmicks. But one thing is for sure - a good looking butch car getting more "butchier" is always welcome!

Just the usual gimmick of Indian car manufacturers window dressing of a car with some garnishing and chrome toppings here and there while leaving it equipped with nothing more than a Chicken Heart LOL! A 1.2 ltr and 1.0 ltr engine with words like turbo and velocity thrown into the name… the International auto scene is so much more exciting in comparison!

So I'm not alone. Me and my friend took test drive of Fronx turbo AT but were bitterly disappointed. It was so bad that I want to try a different car from a different dealership. Because I keep saying to myself a Maruti+turbo+proper AT can't be bad. But it was. First off, engine was noisy and audibly rough at idle. The gear changes were like AMT. And changes were at very high rpm of around 3500 to 4000 rpm. Making loud noise without forward motion. Kiger turbo CVT test drive a few days back was sooo pleasant. Sure, Kiger engine had rough idling too but it disappeared as soon as car moved and it moved at very brisk pace without any lag or jerk. BTW, the Fronx we tested had only 6400 KMs on odometer. Unfortunate that a car which looks best among sub-4 M SUVs drove the way it did.

The last good special editions that were the Zen Carbon and Steel editions. Nothing after that...just taking the base model and giving it a makeover. Maruti started this and then it was further picked up by Skoda and VW.

I could also name Toyota but their TRD editions are still bearable.

Proper engine in a not so proper car. Perhaps the new Baleno deserves it better. That being said, they should look beyond the sales results as well in my opinion. Maruti Suzuki badly needs to build up its brand value.

As per maruti's crash test video the Fronx is safe, as long as one crashes it at slower speeds. Slower is safer!
