Tata Motors showcased the Nexon iCNG at the ongoing 2024 Bharat Mobility Show.

The Nexon iCNG is equipped with Tata’s twin-cylinder technology, which features two small 30 litre cylinders instead of a single large unit. The cylinders are mounted under the boot floor, instead of taking up space in the luggage area. Speaking of which, the Nexon iCNG is said to offer 230 litres of boot space.

According to Tata Motors, the Nexon iCNG will be India’s first CNG vehicle powered by a turbo-petrol engine. It will be powered by a 1.2-litre, 3-cylinder engine that produces 118 BHP and 170 Nm when running on petrol.

The Nexon iCNG is equipped with a single advanced ECU, and a modular fuel filter and uses an NGV1 universal-type nozzle that is said to enable faster refuelling. The SUV can start in CNG mode and automatically switch between petrol and CNG modes.

Re: Tata Nexon iCNG unveiled at 2024 Bharat Mobility Show

More power to Tata for listening to what the customer wants. The Nexon was already a popular car for aftermarket CNG conversions. It has been well established that this MPFi turbo petrol engine works well on gas. Great that Tata has made it official, so buyers don’t have to compromise on boot space or warranty or have to deal with potentially incompetent installers. Factory fit is factory fit, and Tata’s CNG implementation is by far the best of them all.

Further cements the Nexon’s position as the car with by far the most powertrain options to choose from.

1.2 turbo petrol + 5MT
1.2 turbo petrol + 6MT
1.2 turbo petrol + 6 AMT
1.2 turbo petrol + DCT

1.2 turbo + CNG

1.5 diesel + 6MT
1.5 diesel + 6AMT

EV - medium range
EV - long range

Great for the customer, but god help Tata’s production planners.

Very soon they could very well launch one more option of :
1.2 turbo + CNG + AMT

Given that they have just launched CNG + AMT in the Tiago and Tigor.

Re: Tata Nexon iCNG unveiled at 2024 Bharat Mobility Show

Finally a convincing product for people like me, who are living in the ncr and can't buy diesel even if they want too,CNG seems to be the only 'affordable' alternative.
The Integration of CNG cylinder seems to be exceptional in these newer tata cars.Have seen aftermarket cng in some turbo cars with seamless integration so shouldn't be a issue with company fitted kit in regard to power and reliability.

Although, had a major doubt if these car are always on CNG on default wouldn't it effect the engine severely especially in case of a turbocharged engine.
Though, haven't owned a cng car till date but have been listening that if initial and ending kilometres are driven in petrol,it is beneficial for engines 'normal realibility'.

It would be a lucrative option with amt atleast within the city limits with that amount of power,it may prove as a perfect practical enthusiasts choice.

Well done Tata. Only if they could sort out their niggles & after sales support woes...

If they end up launching the CNG + DCA combo; it would add another dimension and eat away the market share of the hybrids. After all, the only motivation to buy hybrids is to save fuel cost.

I love the twin cylinders. It sorts out the biggest issue with CNG: the lack of boot space.

As someone who has owned (and eventually sold) an i10 CNG, (dealer fitted), after 10 years of running and over 80k km of usage, I can safely say that there should not be any major issue with the engine. Even though the dealer had recommended starting and stopping the car on petrol, I can say that laziness ensured that less than 25% of the time the vehicle was stopped on petrol. As the vehicle always started on petrol, that was the only lubrication the injectors received.

The car was sold only as the itch for a bigger vehicle grew (upgraded to the venue).

The new generation CNG vehicles from Tata even support direct CNG start, so I don't think engine reliability will be an issue. The turbocharger is anyways after the engine, so it only deals with exhaust gases anyways. On top of that, CNG being a cleaner fuel by a mile, the turbo should run smoother than a petrol exhaust.

Any Auto expert can comment on how Turbo will work with CNG? I haven't seen any Turbo cars with CNG.

This is getting more and more lucrative, but I suppose its cost would be 12lacs plus.
Also little disappointment is they continued with 3 cylinder engine.

Wow. Tata is blasting all guns for dominating this segment and targeting customers from every section of society.

After petrol, diesel,& EV now it's CNG. So customers have all the fuel options in both manual and automatic (ignore EV here). I am sure after the launch of CNG they will come up with CNG automatic too.

Kudos to TML.

Re: Tata Nexon iCNG unveiled at 2024 Bharat Mobility Show

With 99 variants already in ICE Nexon, and now with this CNG setup next year, I am sure it will touch 110-115 variants minimum. All the best to the customers for finalizing the variant to buy. Too much of options will definitely confuse the buyers, but at least there will be something on offer that absolutely fits the requirements of the buyer.

Tata Nexon CNG could be launched in the coming weeks

According to a media report, Tata Motors is likely to launch the Nexon CNG in the coming weeks. It will compete with the Maruti Suzuki Brezza CNG.

Tata Nexon iCNG unveiled at 2024 Bharat Mobility Show-20240201_182947.jpg

The Nexon CNG was showcased in concept form at the Bharat Mobility Show in January. It will be powered by a 1.2-litre 3-cylinder turbo-petrol engine, making it India’s first CNG car with a turbocharged engine. Reports suggest that it will be offered with an automatic manual transmission (AMT) in addition to the standard 5-speed manual.

The Nexon CNG will use Tata’s twin-cylinder technology, which features two smaller cylinders instead of a single large unit. The CNG cylinders are mounted under the boot floor, which helps liberate usable luggage space in the boot.

With the introduction of the Nexon CNG, customers will have four powertrain options to choose from, Petrol, Diesel and EV being the other three.
