Re: 2023: Brand-by-brand analysis of the Indian passenger car market

Tata and Mahindra, who otherwise have straddled the crossover and SUV segments, are conspicuous by their prolonged absence in the reigning Creta-segment.

These datasets will kind of keep filling the spreadsheets here on for a good 7-10 years timeline, courtesy the psychological manifestations of the masses coupled with the economy of the country.

Re: 2023: Brand-by-brand analysis of the Indian passenger car market

A thought comes to mind when I see Maruti's results - looks to me that the share of Maruti's sales for the most part shifted from one segment to another (sedans to crossovers/suvs). Another hint at a potential cap in terms of market share for the company.

Top notch work with the graphs - @pqr

Re: 2023: Brand-by-brand analysis of the Indian passenger car market

Brilliant!

Thank you so much for this amazing thread! Very informative and equally meaningful.

Couple of pointers -

1. Petrol constitutes a significant 65% of total sales, while diesel has dwindled to a mere 18%. Thats a substantial gap. Hybrid and Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs) account for only about 4-5%, indicating it's still a long way to go for them.

2. SUVs/Crossovers are flying off the shelves. Nearly every other buyer is opting for them, comprising a notable 49% of total sales across all body styles. Looks like this trend is going continue for a long time.

Re: 2023: Brand-by-brand analysis of the Indian passenger car market

Thanks pqr.Great info & analysis.

Where/what is the source of this data?

It would be interesting to consider what factors have led to this substantial uptick of the SUV style in the Indian market over any other type...

For the average buyer/commuter an SUV or sedan wouldn't make a difference.

Some angles that may be considered:

1. Psychology (perception of personal safety, perception of durability, perception of a bigger car, ...)
2. Marketing
3. Ground clearance / ride height
4. Swag-factor (Does a burly SUV have more swag than a sleek nimble-r sedan?)
