Tata Motors is gearing up to launch India’s first CNG-powered cars with an automatic gearbox. The Tiago and Tigor CNG will soon be offered with an AMT option and dealerships have already started accepting pre-bookings for a token amount of Rs 21,000.



The Tiago iCNG AMT will be available in XTA, XZA+ and XZA NRG trims, while the Tigor iCNG AMT will come in XZA and XZA+ variants.

The Tiago and Tigor iCNG models are powered by a 1.2-litre 3-cylinder engine that produces 72 BHP @ 6,000 rpm and 95 Nm @ 3,500 rpm in CNG mode. Currently, both models are offered with a 5-speed manual gearbox. Customers will soon get the option of a 5-speed AMT as well.

The Tiago and Tigor iCNG feature Tata’s dual-cylinder CNG tank technology. Instead of a single large CNG cylinder that gobbles up boot space, the cars are equipped with two smaller cylinders that fit under the luggage area.

Finally!!

Someone has had the good sense to putting together already available concepts and offer CNG automatic option. And as always, it is Tata which is taking the lead in innovation. Makes sense to provide maximum all options out of existing platforms. Minimum cost, maximum choice.

A couple of years back, I (test) drove an aftermarket CNG-fitted Honda City, with a torque convertor, and came out impressed. The car would hold gears for longer as compared to petrol, resulting in more engine noise, but the performance drop was negligible. A good transmission actually masks the power and torque loss that is inevitable with CNG fuel.

The convenience of an automatic paired to low running cost of CNG makes a lot of sense at a time when diesel options are headed towards extinction. Even now, diesel automatics are limited to big and heavy SUVs that are not very practical in city traffic. While it's good that Tata is taking the lead here, I'm not sure how the Tiago's AMT would perform with reduced engine output. The AMT is a confused transmission to begin with, and I'm sure the annoying head nod will become worse on CNG. But driving experience aside, the proposition of a well-built automatic hatchback with a usable boot and factory-fitted CNG is otherwise very appealing.

The pricing would be crucial I believe. If Tata gets too optimistic and overprices these cars by a lakh or so over their petrol variants and suddenly the EV counterparts(priced2-3 lakh over ICE) would start to look better VFM, given the performance you get with Tiago EV over a CNG AMT car.

Anyway Tiago XT starts at 7.27L on road in my city, while Tiago EV XT MR comes at 9.88L. CNG AMT gives freedom to drive it anywhere any KMs. EV gives you great performance at negligible cost per KM but mostly limited to city runs.

To me atleast, an EV makes more sense given the performance and low running cost.

This is one car, people should really not jump in to buy. As exciting as it sounds it remains to be seen how much a compromise it is on driving front.This is one thing people have been wanting since long and TATA has come out with it. It could have first mover advantage here.

If it remains a good car to be driven in bumper to bumper traffic, it will be sold well. Do not expect everything from it, just treat it as a city car and you should be good. My bet is these are geared lower than usual CNG/Petrol tiago to take of this unlikely combo of AMT + CNG.

Yes and pricing, filling CNG is not as quick as petrol so if the price difference is substantial its a point of consideration over the boot compromise, compromised driving experience and of course time to fill CNG.

Waiting to see how other manufacturers follow the trend setter Tata! Hope Maruti Suzuki soon follows this in their CNG lineup. CNG with torque converter gearbox can be expensive but might provide better drive experience than AMT in models such as Brezza and Grand Vitara

Damn. If it’s tuned well it could be the perfect city car for me. I have to drive at least 50 kms a day, which will only increase with time due to business commitments. Knowing it won’t be a performer, far from it, if it’s smooth and quick till 60-70 it can be a good city car. Usable boot, company fitted CNG & automatic. Sounds perfect.

Finally, an automatic (AMT) with CNG, although not the best choice of transmission, AMT would have surely been the easier and most cost-effective route with CNG. Eagerly awaiting to see how they price it!

It was about time for someone to bring in a CNG automatic car. Kudos to Tata for their forward thinking approach.

If priced well, it may find decent acceptance in fleet sales as well.

If one keeps the hardcore enthusiasts amongst us aside, this is a perfect match for a larger group of buyers. Most of those who opt for CNG are price conscious buyers, as they want a low running cost. Similarly AMT serves the price conscious cohort.

This seems like a good move from Tata to bring the most affordable clutch-less tech & most affordable(and clean) conventional fuel option(CNG) together in one of the safest hatchback.
This should be a superb seller in crowded cities like Mumbai, Delhi and Bengaluru.
Yes the EV is available, but then a Petrol-CNG-AMT provides way more versatility than an EV.

Guess these should be prized 50-60K above the equivalent AMT variant, if so then it will be a good proposition.
Would this now pave way for CNG-AMT Tigor and Punch?

On another note its amazing how Tata are proactively responding to the market.

Tata should offer it in base variants across the range. I am sure cabbies - who are very astute businessmen - will appreciate a well priced CNG AT. Driving for 100 - 150 km in traffic per day is painful.

It'll make Uber / Ola drivers more productive. The AMT costs will easily be recovered by the higher productivity, lesser leg pain / medical bills and superior mental health.

Despite the automatic transmission, it is worth noting that the fuel efficiency of the CNG AMT variants may experience a marginal decrease compared to their manual counterparts. The Tiago CNG is priced from Rs 6.55 lakh, while the Tigor CNG starts from Rs 7.80 lakh (ex-showroom), with an expected premium of approximately Rs 60,000 over their manual counterparts.
