Don't underestimate this engine, it is can really go.
My Mom and Aunt just bought a 2023 Triber and the engine is surprisingly sprightly for an 1.0 NA. The numbers don't tell the whole story. The gearing is very short, with the result that the car picks up speed effortlessly, even when fully loaded with 6 adults. If you go to mountain areas such as in Assam, HP or even Ooty, you will see a lot of these cars used as Taxis. I took my mom's Triber up to Kodaikanal and it was able to climb effortlessly uphill. We had a Triber Taxi on a recent Assam trip with 5 adults and luggage and it was definitely not slow going on 4-5 hour highway trips across Manas, Kaziranga etc. Cruising at 100 does not stress the engine too much, any speed higher than that it will start to groan and noise and vibrations go up all of a sudden. Admitted, it is not exciting for highway drives, but not boring either and felt much more eager than the Honda Amaze 1.2 my uncle has.
Overall, you will not feel a paucity of pick up in typical city traffic. In the highways, it is not fast but is not slow either and even most normal overtaking can be easily managed. The icing on the cake is the ride quality - it is 70% of what the Duster used to be - takes road undulations with aplomb and is totally unsettled through most potholes and bumps on the road. Also, effortless to drive a feather light clutch and steering. Though there are some typical 3-cylinder vibrations at idle, the the engine settles down once on the move. If all that it is not enough, you get 4 star safety rating and it probably the cheapest car you can buy in India with that level of safety rating. I am not surprised the Triber already sells a solid 2000 copies consistently every month and think it deserves to sell a lot more for the price/value it offers.
Looks like Renault has dropped prices by 25K - 35K variant to variant as compared to 2023 prices especially in lower variants. RXE dropped from 6.34 lakhs to 5.99 lakhs and the RXL dropped from 7.05 lakhs to 6.8 lakhs. RXT and RXZ prices remain roughly the same. Should further improve sales into the taxi market, it is an ideal people mover and
Point to note - in 2023, Renault added E20 fuel compatibility, ESC, Traction Control and Hill Hold Assist as standard across variant.
For 2024, Renault has added a number of additional features variant-by-variant as below, while dropping prices on some of the variants and holding prices steady on others, even with a lot of additional features added.
Renault has been doing a great job with a steady stream of updates on this car to increase the value per rupee paid steadily.

The key requirement for a 7 seater is to get off the line smoothly when loaded with passengers & luggage. This is especially important in city traffic or on ghat roads or heavy traffic 2 laned roads. Triber with a turbo petrol engine will struggle. Don't be fooled by a turbo petrol's power or torque figures - they achieve these numbers at very high RPM (4000 RPM/6000 RPM). |
Completely agree - The Triber is not a good use case for a Turbo Petrol engine, especially the Renault Nissan 1.0 Turbo. Although this is a turbopetrol engine, it is not a direct injection turbopetrol. It is an MPI engine with a turbocharger fitted. Gasoline Direct Injection (GDI) engines develop peak torque very low down in the RPM range, while the MPI+Turbo engines develop peak torque much later in the rev range as you said above.
For comparison, let us consider three turbocharged 1.0 liter engines all of the same size, two of which are direct injection (VW/Hyundai) and one is MPI + Turbocharger.
Hyundai/Kia 1.0 GDI
Max Power: 118 bhp@6000rpm
Max Torque: 172 Nm@1500-4000rpm
VW 1.0 GDI
Max Power: 114 bhp@5000-5500 rpm
Max Torque: 178 Nm@1750-4500rpm
Renault 1.0 MPI Turbo:
Max Power: 99 bhp@5000rpm
Max Torque: 160 Nm@2800-3600rpm
