Re: Pre-worshipped car of the month : Buying a used 2nd-gen Toyota Fortuner

Voted Yes (under a certain circumstance)

Even though we reside in Gurgaon, our hometown is Guwahati, in Assam. So somewhere in the future, when my dad is retired, and he and mom subsequently decide to settle there amidst our extended family, there is an option of buying a used Gen 2 Fortuner, and driving it all the way till there. Moreover, being an anti-diesel market, it's price would be relatively cheaper in NCR as well.

Under normal circumstances though, it's a NO.

Re: Pre-worshipped car of the month : Buying a used 2nd-gen Toyota Fortuner

Voted No! Unless there’s a specific use case for it doesn’t make much sense. It suits one who munches up a lot of miles on the highway or somebody who has a large family who goes often on road trips with the occasional need to tackle tough terrains it will be reliable and easy on the pocket in the long run. But then it’s a typical boring big seven seater with its lazy gearbox and the body roll and stiff ride. Toyota can bring in the V6 version with a lot more horsepower and it will be still be a boring vehicle.

For somebody who drives mostly solo or with only a passenger on the highways and is into premium seven seater SUVs, the Kodiaq seems like a better choice as a used one especially the BS4 version with the diesel engine will be even more value. But if only planning to change cars once in a decade Fortuner should be the default choice, but not used. Get a new one and use it for a few lakh kilometres; get the money’s worth out of it and pass it on the next owner and that’s how Toyotas should be sold after a few years and few lakh kms.

I see many on the ads now some with just 5000 kms and barely 6 months old asking almost the same price as a new one. Don’t know why they bought it in the first place without knowing its shortcomings and from what I have seen they are having a hard time selling such low km almost new Fortuners because most people with that kind of budget go for the Big three in the used market because one can easily get a used GLE for maybe the same or only slightly more depending on the model year.

Re: Pre-worshipped car of the month : Buying a used 2nd-gen Toyota Fortuner

Voted yes, you need to own one to appreciate it. Cliched reason for voting no are all over this thread with alternative choices like the c**p VAG group or Hyundai offerings purely for ‘driving dynamics’ and features. Some folks have even gone as far as using words like ‘looting’ etc, try telling that to the tons of cab drivers that swear by their Toyotas (Innovas and Etios), instead of which Tbhp is full of reliability horror stories for the VAG cars that isn’t the case with Toyota and specifically Fortuner. Is the fortuner overpriced - absolutely! But it pays off over the long term in spades.

Re: Pre-worshipped car of the month : Buying a used 2nd-gen Toyota Fortuner

Have voted no for the 2nd-gen Fortuner. I love the Fortuner, but it has two deal-breakers for me = bumpy ride & heavy steering in the city. If Toyota fixes that in the 3rd-gen (reliable sources say they will), then it's a top contender for me.

The reason that prices are so high & close to a new Fortuner is that, cash can be a big component in used car transactions. That's also why you see 1-2 year old luxury cars asking for obscene prices. I cannot go into a Mercedes showroom and pay 30-lakhs cash under-the-table & unaccounted for a brand new S-Class, but I can do that to a used car dealer for a 1-year old S-Class.

Likewise with used Fortuners. Those 40-lakh used Fortuners have 25-40% of their transaction value paid in black money.

Re: Pre-worshipped car of the month : Buying a used 2nd-gen Toyota Fortuner

Voted YES!

For a perspective buyer looking for a new or used car in the range of 30-50 big ones, a Fortuner will probably not even be in your list of options. There are cars that offer more creature comforts, better ride quality, better driving or offroading capabilities, more gizmos and most of them would offer a sunroof at probably half the price.

But when people buy a Fortuner, they seldom consider options. They just want a Fortuner and nothing else will do. Maybe it's for the bragging rights, for the road presence or the looks, who knows, it's hard to define or justify love.

For a similar $$ I would consider a J150 Prado as well

Re: Pre-worshipped car of the month : Buying a used 2nd-gen Toyota Fortuner

Voted NO for the following reasons:

1. The car value doesn't depreciate big time, especially in markets like Chennai and Bengaluru.
2. At the pre-owned price point, I can get a new car either the XUV700 or even the Hycross
3. Feature wise, it is the most basic at this price point. True, it is build to last long, but many cars in this price point provide much more technology and features when compared to the Fortuner
4. Finally the second gen was probably not the best looking of the ones that Toyota has launched. So I wouldn't be interested

Re: Pre-worshipped car of the month : Buying a used 2nd-gen Toyota Fortuner

The Fortuner has just stopped tugging at heart strings like it used to. It may look leaner than earlier but it is still a heavy, laboursome car to drive. While I appreciate the built to last feel, even that isn't the same as before. Infact, if taken care of and primarily driven on good roads, most cars last longer than we wish to own them.

Would not recommend. The affordable ones have shady histories and the reasonably maintained ones have started becoming ridiculously expensive. It’s not only a discontinued model, it’s also way more complicated with a lot of features which means if it’s maintained improperly, you are in for a headache.

And if that doesn’t dissuade you, they are slow as hell because Toyota didn’t bring the updated engine and gearbox here.

Re: Pre-worshipped car of the month : Buying a used 2nd-gen Toyota Fortuner

Voted ‘YES’, only if the Fortuner is 4x4 AT due to :-
  • Makes for good overland vehicle. It is big and great off the road. Endeavour is better but, Ford is no more in India due to which not many will buy it even used IMHO.
  • Spending 25 lakhs to 40 lakhs, is still better than spending 50 lakhs to 60 lakhs.
  • High mileage run cars are available, probably because Toyota is extremely reliable (at least the BS4). Also, when compared to other brands, I personally have not heard much niggle stories.
  • Great aftermarket support. But, then this point is valid for some other cars too.

If it is Fortuner 4x2, I will probably buy a Crysta or HyCross. To me, Fortuner in 4x2 is not worth buying (no offence).

Re: Pre-worshipped car of the month : Buying a used 2nd-gen Toyota Fortuner

Never,
There is a thumb rule that if you are buying a high demand, low depreciating model then go for new, In the used space always look for cars which did not do well in the primary market.

Cars like Fortuner, Innova, Swift, Alto have least depreciation and the delta between used and new car is manageable. I personally feel that people who buy these models in the secondary market are either emotional decision makers or bad financial planners

In the used segment, one has to do sniping (pick the right nerve) for example you can get 2-5 years old VAG cars at a very good price (Vento, Rapid, Octavia, Superb can be sourced at 50-60% price after 3 years), there are others like Duster petrol, Elantra/ Sonata, Civic, Accord, EON etc.

In this case ample good options available, at a price of used fortuner one can get
- XUV 700, Scorpio N, Innova HyCross, Safari in new
- Used Kodiaq + Swift, Prev Gen Tucson + New Nexon, Pajero Sport + New Thar, Used Superb + New Thar at the same price point in the secondary market

Re: Pre-worshipped car of the month : Buying a used 2nd-gen Toyota Fortuner

Voted NO, Mostly the used fortuners would have covered lakh kms and yet the owners think it is an investment so the premium resale value. A brand new Scorpio N is a better deal any day.

No offence, but I found fortuner to be very bouncy on undulations and 3rd row seats are a joke.

Re: Pre-worshipped car of the month : Buying a used 2nd-gen Toyota Fortuner

Voted No,

Reasons:
  • It's an overrated car with decade old standards on comfort, space, features and interiors ( just compare it with Gloster in that department ).
  • Govt is already setting "weird" policies to discourage Diesel engine. So, getting a diesel used Fortuner would be a gamble.
  • Petrol engine is puny for that giant. So does not make sense anyways.

Recommendation:
A new Toyota Innova Hycross falls in approx. the same budget. It has the same reliability that Fortuner provides ( Toyota! ) and you get a lot better interior, features, space and comfort. You also get a Hybrid which is good for both city and Govt policies.

Re: Pre-worshipped car of the month : Buying a used 2nd-gen Toyota Fortuner

Voted a conditional Yes for Fortuner 4X4 BS 1V models (pre-facelift)

Reasons:
1. Should get decent example in the 25 to 35 lakhs range
2. No DPF issues to contend with
3 Probably better than spending 53 lakhs on road Bangalore!

For the 4X2 models like others have mentioned perhaps a innova crysta does the job better.

Re: Pre-worshipped car of the month : Buying a used 2nd-gen Toyota Fortuner

Voted NO

Reasons stated below.

Toyota has positioned the Fortuner as a premium product, but it is anything but premium. Most common touch points are made of plastics that are hidden away in a Lexus or the European majors. Peel away the price premium and the Fortuner is a utility vehicle, built for the farm.

Sound deadening is ridiculous poor in Fortuner. At 80 kmph, road noises, tyre noises and wind noises are very audible, a conversation is made mute between the front row and the second row, third row better scream.

Ride quality is bad. An eight hour road trip will leave you fatigued. Constant undulations and sharp potholes filtering through will make you conscious about the road you are travelling on.

Last one is more philosophical, life is too short to buy a used car. As is, financial prudence is not being being achieved when you buy a used Fortuner in India. Picking up a new car is a very special occasion, pictures and memories of such occasions do provide immense joy when relieved with your loved ones as the seasons progress. Peace
