In my opinion it is “owners pride and neighbours envy” Mine is 30K done in 2 years and I am so happy with the ride quality and the reliability. DPF happens once in 200-300 K largely depending on driving conditions and weather. If you are in cold places it is frequent and comes every 150 Kms odd.

The road presence is a cut above. No one comes near and messes with me and gives a jealous look too. Mileage is decent -approx 10KMPL. Damn cheap service cost and Toyota’s zero depreciation. In fact they keep increasing the price so it’s more or like a slow growing FD.

I am also happy about the less electronics and hardly anything fails. 11 Speaker music system is cool as well.

So in my opinion if you get a good second hand go for it. It’s worth it!

Yes, The car road presence is good and service cost is minimal when compared to other cars of the same segment. I drive an Innova 2.8Z, the engine is noisy but it's good highway cruiser.

If I want a car to pass on to my next generation (irrespective of Fossil Fuel future) it will be the Fortuner.

No. Biggest reason is the resale value of Fortuner which is very high. If I need a Fortuner, I’ll buy it in 4x4 drivetrain and I’ll get a new 1 due to huge resale value. If I’m fine without 4x4, it will be better to buy a brand new Innova or Tata Safari.

As an ex-owner of the 1st gen full time 4wd model and having done extended test drives of the current gen over time, I feel it's over priced for what it offers and honestly not relevant for most folks / use cases. Let me elaborate -
1. Let's start with what's going for it - unmatched power and torque, reliability, macho image and emotional appeal to certain segments - politicians, business folks and so on.
2. From a use case perspective, let's look at three main scenarios -
2.1 - more than 95% of all Fortuners are sold 4*2. Assume the last few lacs don't break it for those who can afford and yet don't go for 4*4, means it's used primarily as a people mover. For that, you have Innova Crysta and Hycross with a far better ride, passenger comfort at a much lower price.
2.2 For those looking for a tourer with bad road / occasional off road uses, you have feature laden and comfort oriented options with 4*4/AWD like Tucson, Kodiaq/Tiguan, Scorpio and Xuv700, last 2 being significantly cheaper.
2.3 For those looking for primarily off-road use, yes it's a powerful and dependable machine with loads of mod potential. Still how many would use a 50 Lac car for pure off roading? That's where Thar and Jimny have changed the game, more practical and affordable and hence accessible.
3. And it's exorbitantly price, low VFM, more emotional than logical appeal for a few target segments ( mentioned above) reduces it's overall relevance.

Yes, a well maintained second hand and possibly reasonably priced (luck needs to work overtime) will go for it. Can’t afford new one and hence will not look for it. I am in lookout for one such for sometime

Long hauls without a fuss, Minimal electronics, minimal maintenance, no unwanted sensors and show bazi and above all - peace of owning one. Yes there are some compromises but don’t mind doing it

I have Innova 20212 and owned 2005 earlier, I will anytime go for T badge. Agree it doesn’t depreciate as others do but it’s worth the spent.

It’s super surprising to see the vote percentage (60% voted for and 40% against ) and the comments which are mostly against. Looks like people who want to buy the Fortuner just buy it with out too much analysis - paralysis and nothing else works.

I have thought about it and on the balance voted yes . It’s just one those vehicles which we can’t go wrong with and there is some safety in going with the masses. Also very understandable as we don’t want a fast depreciating D Segment car.

Used Fortuner, 80-100k run, 4-5 years old price: 25 lacs
It's a no brainer. Get the used one.
A world where Sonet top model costs 18 lacs, Creta/Seltos costs 23 lacs, a used Fortuner just makes too much sense. How low do you want Fortuners to fall down now? They retain their value in used market, if you buy a used one the same thing would apply for you too, when you sell it, it will retain a good chunk of it's value.

Most of the examples in the used market have very very high mileage and are simply not worth the asking price. Apart from that, Fortuner is a very basic car and IMO lacks the desirability factor. You need to be a serious Toyota fan or a hardcore offroading fan(not talking about politicians and related guys who buy this SUV in huge numbers) to own a Fortuner.

I have a used Hexa XTA which serves my need, I would rather buy another Hexa or even the Crysta instead of the losing a fortune over the fortuner.

Voted No. Because I'd never get a 2nd gen fortuner for the price I am willing to pay for one considering the features and overall interior quality on offer (around 20 lacs)

Personally, I would just buy a used 1st gen Fortuner instead. It’s cheaper and for lesser than the price of a Thar (10-15L), you can get a decent 5+2 seater 4x4 that can handle any kind of abuse. Mod potential is also way higher and no worrying about DPF shenanigans.

Why would I buy something that is not comfortable, spacious enough with near ending or zero warranty ?

There are better and newer cars available for lesser money. Reliability and resale value is the only positives and these two reasons may somehow convince me only if cost is less than other suv options.

Safari, 700 (new)would anyday work out better.

One can hypothetically buy a new car at 70% cost of a decent old fortuner, invest rest of money by taking tbhp help tips and buy another new one after 5-6yrs and possibly still save money. One would have brand new cars twice in 10-12 yrs.

In list of my priorities, my family's comfort comes before what people on the road would say about my car.


But then these are individual opinions and everyone is correct when it comes to heart

Voted NO. For me it's a 'Second hand' - You may call it pre worsipped or pre owned- I belong to the pre-politically correct generation! An average XUV of the vintage gave 12-14 in city and 16-18kmpl on highways, a better ride quality and features for lesser price. Then there was a thread on boring nature of Toyota design growth. Whilst 'Why fix it if it ain't broke' may be good mantra but other parallel brands went miles ahead when they raised the prices! Fact is competition like Pajero or Endeavour or even a Tucson lost out just because they didn't have the sales, either due brand value or the image, but were equally competent!
And lastly, I see maximum road rage type driving in Innova cabs and the usual suspect- the Fortuner

It's an overpriced, overhyped, featureless, inefficient SUV selling only because of bragging rights & so called reliability.

It is not a great car to drive either, and ride quality is also bumpy / bouncy at all times. Never does it stay flat even on a highway.

Recently picked up a Tucson 4x2 D AT, less than a month ago, we did not even consider the Fortuner. Wish the Kodiaq was available in D AT, that would have surely made it to the consideration list.

Both, the Innova (Crysta) & Fortuner, these are overpriced LOOTING machines from Toyota for the Indian market. And most buyers, are ok with it.

Voted No myself reflecting exactly the same sentiments as above. I remember I drove a 4x4 long distance to Punjab almost as soon as it was launched back sometime in 2009-10 and I was left horrified how uncomfortable, cumbersome, cramped and underpowered it felt. I agree that its only appeal is its butch, bulky looks that people seem to like these days. Personally I am now averse to all such pretentious 'trucks.' So, I will not buy it--new or used.

Reasons -

1. Reliability- Never seen fortuner stranded on road. Tremendous mile muncher.
2. Road presence.
3. Cheaper service costs.
4. ‘One day I will have this car’ feeling
5. Saving some money through pre owned route than buying new and getting depreciated.
6. Minimal electronics is a boon for me. I can drive only with necessary safety net and an ac for whole day.
