November 2023 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Anaysis

NOTES:

1: Thanks to the team at Auto Punditz for sharing these sales numbers with us!

2: Only cars that sell 500+ units (and thus, the relevant ones) have been included in the gainers & losers chart.

3. These manufacturer-reported sales numbers are factory dispatches to dealerships. They are NOT retail sales figures to end customers.

Re: November 2023 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Anaysis

I think it's time for consolidation of efforts , Stellantis , VAG etc.

The investment that goes into two models , if can be put into perfecting just one car - for example Kushaq alone , would have made it a better offering against a Creta instead of diluting efforts across multiple vehicles and achieve nothing in return, losing brand value , customer confidence etc.

This can be seen in the case of Magnite / Kiger also, it's one thing to loan a successful model to another OEM like Baleno/Glanza vs developing two weak products at the same time.

Kudos to the homegrown manufacturers. One thing that intrigues me is that Tata is showing as No.3, however the TOI article shows that Tata has sold 53k+ cars and overtaken Hyundai.

The sales of the S-Presso, Celerio and the Ignis is quite worrisome. If they are eventually phased out , that leaves just the Alto and the Kwid in the segment and nothing else. My prediction is that the sub 10 lakh segment will be filled with micro electric cars of the future, like an E-kei car, if you will.

Did you notice that for once, the Slavia has taken the pole position in factory dispatches in the C2 segment?
That apart it also seems to be a bit of lean period for the Koreans. I think that may be because of the anticipation of the Sonet and Creta facelifts, but what happened to the Exter?

Well people have slowly moved from the Alto to the Wagon R which offers better space and engine at a slightly higher price, Celerio to the Tiago for better safety and Ignis to the i10 for better features. Manufacturers are focusing primarily on the 10+ lakh segment as that's where the demand is currently.

The numbers mentioned here in Team-BHP are factory dispatches to dealers or wholesales.

The numbers mentioned in the TOI article are retails sales where a manufacturer's car gets billed on Customer's name.

The biggest story for this month or this festival season is Tata has beaten Hyundai in retail sales. This time there are no exceptions like plant closure etc. More customers have bought Tata than Hyundai.

Citroen! Wake up before it is too late. I believe the mentality of being a laggard is in the genes. From Fiat to Jeep to Citroen; They need to see what others are selling rather than we have the finest of French cars! An expensive car with all bells and whistles has less chances of failing in today's times than an affordable car with no features at all.

We Indians are global citizens, we need global models with best in class features. VFM is no longer what it used to be; It now means, value for the price we are willing to pay. Have a look at sales of luxo barges, we are happily paying big prices.

Re: November 2023 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Anaysis

Top 4 companies sold 80% of total and top 6 sold more than 91%, actually not a good sign for sure. Rest 10 companies are having hardly 9% share is a big worry for us as a customer.

Just few thoughts –

Citroen – C3 Aircross can be declared as flop. Weird strategy to blame here. Not sure how they are going to survive in India henceforth.

Honda – Elevate numbers actually declining MOM which is very strange. People are waiting and they are not delivering, very bad. They should not waste opportunity they got, had to deliver maximum and capture the market share.

Hyundai – Doing great with Creta, Venue & now Exter. Rest doing ok only.

Jeep – They need petrol badly else very tough days ahead. They should get 1.5 Liter powerful engine for Jeep as its a damn heavy car.

Kia – Almost 7% now. Mainly Seltos selling in numbers.

Mahindra – Scorpio is Star of the month for them, numbers are mind blowing. XUV700 numbers are actually down by 2K, not sure why when so many people still waiting.

Maruti – All are down a bit, not sure why. Was plant shutdown was there?

MG – Good numbers for Hector, rest ok.

Nissan – Only good thing for us is they still exists in India.

Renault – Bring on new Duster today. Numbers are actually less then Skoda and VW which a great news for German duo.

Skoda – Some good numbers for them.

Tata – Nexon and Punch are doing simply great. Harrier and Safari doing good, hope numbers will pick up little more.

Toyota – Innova, Fortuner sells month on month, nothing changed here. Some numbers are down though.

VW - Some good numbers for them like sibling Skoda.

Re: November 2023 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Anaysis

Except for the 3 big ones none of the OEMs are performing well in India. India seriously needs a 440 volt current jolt in the car industry. I being a person in the car industry for long have always seen jolts to come out of the slumber. YOY the sales are not upto the mark and the market has gone stale. Need GOI intervention in increasing the attention towards the industry. OEMs are earning but the dealerships are losing out miserably.

Great doing by Tata for Nexon and Punch. Who would have thought there will be a Tata in the top 5 after the Marutis.
Will Elevate become the new City for Honda ? VW has again gone down to also ran numbers.
