The Art of Silence and Thunder | Car cabin decibels explored

I'm composing this post to explore the car cabin sound decibel levels of various vehicle types, including Hatchbacks, Sedans, SUVs, and MUVs.i like silent cabin inside the car but there is no actual data to compare., I utilized a mobile app to conduct decibel level tests. While these apps may not offer 100% precision, they provide a close approximation to the actual sound levels., the sound level varies depending on the Tyre, Sun film, damping sheets etc.

70 dB or below: Considered safe for extended periods.
70-85 dB: Can cause temporary hearing loss with prolonged exposure.
85-120 dB: Can cause permanent hearing loss with long-term exposure.
120 dB and above: Can cause immediate pain and damage to the ear, even with short exposure.

Name of the Vehicle - XUV500 AT(2018 model) with Good Year Tyre(just 2K driven), no damping sheets, no window sun film installed, Audio was switched off during the test.

Decibel at engine idling - 66-69Db, all windows rolled-up, silent outside environment, tested 10 mins after the start.

Decibel at peak traffic outside @20-40kmph - 71-75 Db (All windows rolled up)
Decibel at highway @80-90Kmph - 78-82Db

A good thread! I've always noted that most of the luxury car manufacturers ensure you are cocooned inside the cabin with fantastic sound deadening materials all around while it kind of tapers down as the segment gets lower.

One stark difference when I moved from Polo GT TSI to Venue was the filtration of outside noise into the cabin which prompted me to get some good damping on the hood and doors.. didn't want to get the flooring/roofing done outside as they would ruin the original carpet/roof liner fitment. The audio quality also got better with damping!

I also look for cladding in the wheel arches and underbody which I believe may reduce some outside noise, especially on the highway.

Please let us know what Mobile App you used to measure the data so that we can also try and measure the levels!

Cheers!

A good debate!

On the flip side we should also think about the cons of a silent cabin. how much sound deadening is safe in a car? From a safety standpoint, i believe one should always be aware of what is going on, on the road and sounds are one of the primary senses that give us that perception. at least in India! if you have a totally silent cabin with a great music system - will that lull your senses?

Interesting!!!

Personally, I will prefer a silent cabin. However, that creates problem for my wife as she feels motion sickness immediately.

On a practical note, sound creeping in from outside not in a harsh level, must be good to give a sense of what's going around.
