re: Team-BHP Car of the Year, 2023 | EDIT: It's the Toyota Innova Hycross

Looks like we will see a first ever Toyota winning the COTY award . Forum favorite Ford is out of business and Mahindra/Tata do not have any new launches.

re: Team-BHP Car of the Year, 2023 | EDIT: It's the Toyota Innova Hycross

Leaving out the luxury brands, Hyundai Exter is the one for me out of this list. Kind of ticks all the boxes and the car is not too small and a variety of variants to choose from.

Reason for not choosing the others (purely my opinion)

Not VFM/Expensive:
Hyundai Verna
Honda Elevate
Toyota Innova Hycross

Not an All rounder:
Typically all EV's
Citroen C3 Aircross
Toyota Rumion

Compromised cars:
All Marutis - I never like them nor their attitude towards indian market. Mileage takes priority over safety for them. Jimny may be an exception to this, but even that bit the dust cos of 'Over Engineered' pricing

Interestingly, a lot of BHP'ians have voted for Hycross and not Invicto. Assuming that this could be because of the hybrid tech owned by Toyota

If facelifts were allowed, or if we run a poll for COTY-Facelifts-2023, Tata Safari would walk away with the trophy

Voted for Elevate for the no-nonsense, super boxy C-SUV offering - although early days and notwithstanding shortchanged offering (compared to even City), it could turn into something that will run forever.

I cannot vote in this poll, if I could, I will vote for Hycross. I bought one myself after extensive search and very happy with the performance of the car so far.

re: Team-BHP Car of the Year, 2023 | EDIT: It's the Toyota Innova Hycross

None of 2023's launches excited me. None made it to my dreams and aspirations folder. My personal opinions are noted below. Can I vote for the Fronx Boosterjet alone?
  • Hyundai Exter - An i10 wishes to look like an SUV. Has missed leg day!
  • Maruti Fronx - A jacked-up Baleno. The boosterjet is the saving grace. For me this is the closest COTY 2023 contender.
  • MG Comet EV - An extremely well-made iPhone with 4 wheels, with almost similar dimensions. And it makes Piaggio Ape Diesel Rickshaws look like Mahindra Thars.
  • Citroen C3 Aircross - Citroen didn't do their homework. Then they got caught doing it in class. Flop!
  • Toyota Rumion - Hello Ertiga!
  • Hyundai Verna - Great specs! Sweet specs! Can be bought only in black and needs the Virtus's body on it to make me smile.
  • Honda Elevate - Honda City SUV, late to the game by many years. Good car. Late!
  • Citroen eC3 - Yeah! Lets confuse the teacher (customers) so that they don't notice we didn't do our homework.
  • Maruti Jimny - Great car in the wrong market, alongside mighty entrenched competitors, offering neither size superiority nor on-road performance superiority. Customers are lapping up its chief competitor even in pseudo-off-road (RWD) form.
  • Mahindra XUV400 - EV version of the XUV300. Okay next!
  • Toyota Innova Hycross - Wow! It does what an evolved Innova should do. Wait, where is the 3L Diesel with 250+ Bhp power? No one dreamt that?
  • Maruti Invicto - Oh no, not again!
  • BMW X1 - I should check out either the Nexon or the Harrier. Or is it the Safari?
  • Hyundai Ioniq 5 - Nice HOT looking EV. COTY 2025 contender, maybe!
  • Audi Q3 Sportback - Will the Harrier save me money?
  • Volvo C40 Recharge - When is the Harrier EV coming?

re: Team-BHP Car of the Year, 2023 | EDIT: It's the Toyota Innova Hycross

Voted for Hycross based on owning the car for the last 10 months. It's a great fun to play with the hybrid system to extract high mileage. It is a fun to drive vehicle too despite the size.

I have near zero issues despite the car belonging to the first lot of cars from the factory.

re: Team-BHP Car of the Year, 2023 | EDIT: It's the Toyota Innova Hycross

Honestly,
I think I would go for the Hyundai IONIQ 5
and here are a few reasons:

- The IONIQ 5's motor type, is the Permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) and as you probably know, PMSMs are small in size and light in weight, High acceleration and have a wide speed range, that help in driving (of course)

- The IONIQ 5 Is an electric car, and I think that electric cars are the way forward!

Super cute pixel lights, clamshell hood and flush door handles add to the looks, as well as efficiency!

Well, that's why I pick the IONIQ 5

re: Team-BHP Car of the Year, 2023 | EDIT: It's the Toyota Innova Hycross

Voted for Jimny for following reasons:
It is special and unique.
First sold in India and then launched abroad- got to read Indians reviews of a car before Australian/ European ones.
A fancy Maruti with bad FE and non- VFM: oxymoron.
True to its predecessor gypsy roots unlike say Tata Safari.
Global niche product which has serviceable in tier 3/4 towns.
True blue back to basics small vehicle in age of obese vehicles with huge screens and expensive low profile tyres.

Most importantly, it has brought back bargaining power back to hands of consumers ( read discounts) which turned upside down since Covid BS6 ( price increases, compulsory accessories, waiting periods, jugaad needed for fater delivery); hope more will follow soon.

Voted for Innova Hycross. Perfect family car just got better with more features, future proof drivetrain (Hybrid).

re: Team-BHP Car of the Year, 2023 | EDIT: It's the Toyota Innova Hycross

Voted for the Verna!

It's so much closer to the Germans in terms of ride and handling without compromising on quality or safety. It's so good that even existing VAG owners wouldn't mind getting one today which was never the case even 5 years ago.

It's not the most relevant car out there but it's definitely flawless when it comes to value as a package.

re: Team-BHP Car of the Year, 2023 | EDIT: It's the Toyota Innova Hycross

Voted for Hyundai Verna.
It's mainly for the 1.5 litre turbo petrol and sorted dynamics.

Second choice would be Toyota Innova Hycross.

re: Team-BHP Car of the Year, 2023 | EDIT: It's the Toyota Innova Hycross

Personally for me Toyota can't produce a COTY in India or outside of India as well. In India they are priced absurd and outside they are a VFM, no nonsense, nothing extraordinary but reliable brand. Nothing more than that. So I can't choose Hycross even though it's of the best hybrid offering. I chose Ioniq 5. Its VFM considering its own sibling from Kia, ground breaking classic design (I couldn't stop using these two objectives next to each other), great range and a manageable size. Only if I know the future of the battery replacement in an ev I would have preferred this.

Verna's design is one of the finest and that's it. Nothing else there to excite me.

re: Team-BHP Car of the Year, 2023 | EDIT: It's the Toyota Innova Hycross

Voted for Ioniq 5 over very strong second contender Verna.

1)Simply because it punches above its league.

2)Very simple yet likeable design.

3) Liked the decision of bringing car which is simultaneously available in world markets giving Indian customers some sort of respect. Can't say about other models though.

re: Team-BHP Car of the Year, 2023 | EDIT: It's the Toyota Innova Hycross

Voted for Jimny (disclaimer- just bought one ).

Why?
  • Go anywhere, true 4x4, for a small garage footprint
  • Can comfortably seat a family of 4 including grand parents
  • Can carry some luggage too
  • Refreshing classic (and distinctive) looks in a flood of sharp creases and contours mushrooming urban roads
  • Accessible repairs and maintenance, will not empty wallet
  • No nonsense electronics (increasing failure modes)
  • Plenty of options to customize/personalize
  • International favourite without being a copycat

Cheers,
-BJ
