re: Maruti Jimny Thunder Edition launched at Rs 10.74 lakh | Jimny is 2-lakh rupees cheaper now

They should have given same discount on both Alpha and Zeta. Alpha has only 1L discount.

If there is a proper use case for Jimny, then 10.7 lakhs appears reasonable as you get fail proof 4WD at this price point and Maruti service network.

Change my mind : Jimny should've been a 3 door at launch. The current proportions and the puny tyres don't do any favours for this otherwise solid package. Imagine a 3 door Jimny selling for less than 10 lakhs on road. Thar would've had real competition then! One of the major reasons Jimny isn't selling that well is because of its weird, disproportionate looks imo.

Having spent around 2 months with the Jimny and almost entirely in the city, I would say it's a great city car. It's compact, has enough power for the city, has a superb ride quality for our broken city roads and you sit nice and high. My wife loves it too as it's primarily her car and my weekend fun car.

It's weakness is the highway and hence I would say definitely consider it if the use case is city + adventure.

As an existing owner this doesn't make me love my Jimny less but pains me to see its value being diluted in lust of profits and volumes. No doubt Maruti is not an enthusiasts brand who can handle niche products with passion and exclusivity. Once a mass brand always a mass brand.
Pricing is dynamic, many a time the prices of a successful car go up, do the early buyers in that case, voluntarily pay more money?

There is no "cheating" here, Maruti launched a product at X price point, the market didn't go for it, ergo it's now a reduced price point.

I don't think Maruti (or any other OEM) put a gun to the head of the early buyers nor did they promise that prices will never go down.

I was waiting for this. If they get rid of all the extra accessories, display and further reduce the price by 1L, it will be in line with Gypsy pricing. What was Maruti thinking while pricing the Jimny at launch.

In my humble opinion, a 3 door version would have been recieved even more poorly by the market. I have been saying this on this forum for years now on the Jimny thread and I believe I am vindicated when I say that the Jimny is an ultra niche product and was NEVER going to sell even 2,000+ units a month consistently.

It's not even about price but the Indian market is very clear on price vs "Paisa vasool". The more expensive Thar sells close to 2.5 times the Jimny volumes because it is hefty and looks like a "proper car" (the way the average buyer sees it). The only way Jimny can be a success is if it's dropped to 6-7 lakhs ex showroom because then the market will believe it's diminutive dimensions justify the price point.

The 4*4 quite frankly is a gimmick for 99% of the casual buyer.

There is a pricing error in your quote for thunder edition. As notified by Suzuki there is price reduction on the ex-showroom price resulting in reduced tax and insurance quotes thus reducing the on road price further. Do check again.

Disagree. It depends on the buyer and vehicle whether 4×4 is a gimmick or not, not only on buyer.
An Isuzu 4WD, or Bolero Pick up 4WD or Duster AWD user picks 4×4 for utility, not for gimmick only.

You are taking into consideration just one vehicle-Thar, that is aspirational and now after RWD launch sells in lower numbers in 4WD version.

Similarly, Jimny is a utility vehicle and it's buyer is not a buyer like a Thar buyer is.

Jimny's usual buyer would usually be someone who aspires to use 4×4 one time or another and has utility for the same, while who wants to use the car as regular drive as well.

They may not change the ex-showroom price of the existing variants such as Alpha and Zeta as this may be a time bound offer to clear stocks and Maruti may go back to higher pricing afterwards. Also to avoid legal issues where people who just bought these variants may sue for unfair practice of a massive price drop without any compensation to them. Easier to position it as a brand new variant that cannot be directly compared.

RTO will go by the price notified to it for Alpha and Zeta variants while doing road tax calculations. So the discounts can only offered on on-road prices for these variants since it is not a permanent price drop notified to the RTO.

On the other hand, for the Thunder addition, Maruti can notify new prices to the RTO, positioning it as a new variant, with different pricing from the existing variants. This will then allow Road tax to be calculated on the reduced ex-showroom prices of the Thunder variants. So effective savings of the Thunder variants will also include savings in registration cost due to lower ex-showroom prices.

I only wish Marathe had offered the Zeta MT variant without all the additional accessories as a speacial edition (maybe a "Lightning variant") price just below Rs. 10 lakhs ex-showroom. This would have allowed the vehicle to fall in a lower registration percentage slab in states like Tamil Nadu.

Tamil Nadu charges 13% of ex-showroom price as registration cost for vehicles below 10 lakhs ex-showroom price, and 18% for those about this bracket, effectively increasing cost by Rs.50,000 for a vehicle is priced just over 10,00,000 compared to one priced just under this mark.

He has explicitly stated he went for thunder edition quote. A few posts earlier there was a flyer with the ex-showroom prices of the same and they are way less than what he has been quoted and hence the heads up. But I have edited my prev post for more clarity.

At the top, the quote says 1.5 Zeta AT clearly. I would guess the The quote for Thunder edition would refer to it as such.

Well we both are referring the same. He went in for a quote of Thunder edition but has been given a quote for the regular one. Hope I made my point clear at least now.

The quote seems for Thunder edition only. Even Nexa in Pune is saying 2 lakh discount on on road price, not ex showroom.

Attaching the brochure. It seems that Thunder version pricing is yet to arrive, the discount seems to be on regular version, without any mention of accessories.
