That insurance amount seems quite high. The Bengaluru dealer had quoted 42k for Alpha AT dual tone which had an ex showroom price of 15.05 Lakhs.

The road tax seems inflated too.

Searching online I'm seeing Quotes of 21-22k for the insurance! The dealers have a huge margin on the insurance!

Does this cover engine protection? Considering we may sometimes get over confident during floods within city, it may be a good add on.

Another quote from Pune dealer. Note that the Thunder edition accessories kit is worth Rs.28500/-.

What I also don’t understand is the point on stock clearance. Apparently people in other countries are dying to get their hands on this vehicle. Why not export instead? How much is an auto company’s margin per car that they can drop price by 15.7% on ex-showroom plus throw in free accessories.

The initial discounts started in October. If inventory was piling up, why not slow down production instead of having to take a such a significant cut in profit? And export more.

My calculations above are based on ex-showroom. If we look at the pre-GST and other taxes, it would appear that Maruti is selling it at a loss? Or did they just rob the initial buyers.

I connected with 2 Nexa outlets and the discount is real.

On Alpha AT, one outlet showed 1 lac discount on On-road price (this is the one trying to play clever game), while the other gave me a discounted ex-showroom price (and some discount on on-road price on top of final price).

The discounted ex-showroom price for Alpha AT is 13.89 L.

Please do read what I said fully. I said 99% of the car buying market.

Indian auto market is around the 4million mark. The Thar sells around 45,000-50,000 units + the Jimny around 18,000. The Gurkha and the higher end Jeep 4*4 or the D2+ segments sell a handful. Meaning the Indian 4*4 market is around the 2% of all units sold. Given that the around 60% comes from just one product the Thar and the others combined do less than 22,000-23,000 units per year, it's safe to say that 4*4 is a gimmick for 98% of the car buying populace.

As I posited sir, many car companies raise their prices after a successful launch. Will the early buyers in that case voluntarily pay the differential? Or be very happy that they saved (opportunity costs, not real cash) money?

A product is offered at a price point at a fixed point in time. There's no reason whatsoever that they stick to it for any period in time. Sure the early buyers might feel "cheated" but the choice to be first is entirely on them.

To give an example from a different industry, pre-ordering games during the DVD / CD ROM days was a big thing because supply was limited.

In the case of bug free well made games you could even turn a humongous profit by reselling it on ebay (or similar sites). But if the the game was a Turkey and bombed (like say SimCity 2013 by EA) then a similar cry would come up.

The point being it is always prudent to wait to buy a product in my personal and humble opinion. Sure the rush to own a much awaited video game or car or xyz product might exist but in that case there's a fair chance that the early buyers will be the guinea pigs (niggle ridden launches) or watch as the costs drop on case of unsuccessful products or like in the case of runaway successes like the XUV 700, get in very early while the later buyers stood even a year in queue.

It's all a coin toss but to cry foul play just because a company reacted to the free market is IMHO not fair.

100% agree with you. If you don't want the risk of a price cut, don't be an early adopter. Another way to think about it is that you got the car before most people and drove it exclusively before it got mainstream.

Hey, the extended warranty price quoted to you is 25k, which is much lower than what I'm seeing here in Gurgaon. For what duration is it ?

Here is the pricing a Sawhney Nexa is quoting in Gurgaon. I see alot of room to reduce the insurance quote and basic accessories kit.

Each to his own please.

I guess the point around depreciating asset and resale value is missed here. And at this rate it will be better to wait out initial 6 months for all Maruti new launches.

How can they be charging for the basic accessories kit. Is that not free ? 28K. Insurance seems very high.

Just look at the year end discounts for Skoda as per today’s news paper. Why we don’t discuss on these discounts which all normal car companies give. Why so much noise on Jimny year end sale. This is marketing gimmick and we petrol heads are also falling for them.

re: Maruti Jimny Thunder Edition launched at Rs 10.74 lakh | Jimny is 2-lakh rupees cheaper now

I think these year end discounts have always been there with almost all car manufacturers, at least before COVID. Seems manufacturers have been successful in lowering or removing the general expectation of discounts on stock near year change.

I think this is no exclusive to Jimny, just that the price of car was definitely higher for many but fine with early adopters knowing what it offers and how well it strikes a chord. Problem arises when we start ignoring this rationale in our head when discounts start flowing among the general comments that its not worth it and what not.

Point is if one was happy spending the launch price with some reasoning then, stick to that nothing else matters.
