Re: Fourth-gen Maruti Suzuki Swift caught testing in India. EDIT: Launched at Rs. 6.49 lakh

Here goes the legend. Painfully brutal way of killing a fun and iconic car. Only Maruti can do this to its starchild. For 90s born like me, Swift defined how a car can be so much fun, have great looks and tug at your heart strings and be affordable while doing all above. I feel 2nd gen was the best of the Swift especially the diesel and I am very much ok with how the 3rd gen was. But this update feels like Maruti is purposefully doing it to Swift now that Nexa is where all the premiums (for Maruti) are.

Someone needs to tell the geniuses at Maruti Suzuki that Mahindra XUV3X0 starts at 7.49 lakhs.

Not only that, Swift's pricing transgresses into Baleno territory when someone is buying the top model swift. Why would anyone pay 9.4 lacs for a 3 cyl. AMT Swift when for another 50/60k they can get a 2nd to top model 4cyl. Baleno AMT?

Obviously we are missing something here or the folks at Maruti know their game better.

Swifts strength lies in its fuel efficiency and youthful image, XUV3XO in petrol is a sure shot guzzler whatever figures mahindra gives us on paper. And XUV3XO is Mahindra trying to sell a spruced up XUV300, whereas swift is an established brand and has been selling well since 2004. So even though they may sell at same price point , but Swift still has a lot of advantage which Maruti already knows.

7-10 lacs has mutiple models from Maruti in same price bracket. Each caters to different needs of customers. You have EECO at the lower end and Ciaz at higher end competing in same price bracket. Baleno and swift have always had an overlapping pricing, but they still manage to do decent numbers.

True.

The Mahindra in all likelihood be the much safer car. Also the XUV3X0 has far more spacious and upmarket interiors. The Swift is more frugal thanks to being a much lighter car.

Re: Fourth-gen Maruti Suzuki Swift caught testing in India. EDIT: Launched at Rs. 6.49 lakh

Has MSIL gone bonkers ?

The new "epic" Swift has all the ingredients to make it the second disaster in recent months for MSIL after the Jimny Debacle.

1. Atrocious pricing, competing with its own more premium rivals ? Tick

2. Sparse equipment in the mass selling Lxi/Vxi models ? Tick

3. Three Cylinder instead of the iconic 4 cylinder K12 ? Tick

4. AMT instead of CVT or TC in a supposidly Fun to drive car ? Tick

5. Safety ? Well, I would rather wait for GNCAP but looking at the initial impressions, not very hopeful. Its still based on the Heartattack platform. 6 Airbags is good thing, but may not be sufficient.

Profit margins, i guess. With 3 cylinder engine, the overall cost to produce the engine would be smaller but they are selling the vehicle at higher prices (wrt outgoing 4 cyl.).

It will not surprise me if in near future Toyota will also use this engine for their small cars in other markets. As other members had already said, this engine would for sure find its way in other models (Baleno, Fronx, Ignis, Dezire etc.). Overall a correct step towards more environment friendly car.

Re: Fourth-gen Maruti Suzuki Swift caught testing in India. EDIT: Launched at Rs. 6.49 lakh

When the New Swift was unveiled first internationally (tokyo?) I remember they showcased the hybrid version. That didn't make it to India. The one we have seems to be a step backward in every way but with (albeit marginal) increase in cost. 3 cylinder, same AMT, less power, ugly touchscreen.

Re: Fourth-gen Maruti Suzuki Swift caught testing in India. EDIT: Launched at Rs. 6.49 lakh

I really dislike how now almost all cars under 15 lakhs have either migrated to 3 pots or are going to migrate to them, compared to 4 pots, chasing barely 1-2 kmpl increases in fuel efficiency. How much ever technology has improved, a 4 pot engine is always naturally better than a 3 pot one. Better NVH, definitely more peppy.

The death of low capacity diesels after BS6 really killed all the fun to drive factor in these sort of cars. 3 pot NA petrols are just the worst sort of engines to drive around. They're bland, have low torque, none of the fun to drive feel of diesels, and all the while, they're not even as fuel efficient. My friend still has a ten year old Swift diesel with that beautiful engine, and it is such a joy to drive, while still giving awesome mileage. Whatever this Swift is, is but a shell of what it used to be - a segment benchmark.

Re: Fourth-gen Maruti Suzuki Swift caught testing in India. EDIT: Launched at Rs. 6.49 lakh

Would you believe it that Maruti still didn't change the Drivers side power windows switches and the ORVM switch. I think it dates back to the original Swift.
This gotta be some kind of world record for a manufacturer for using the same switches in 4 generations of a car.

Re: Fourth-gen Maruti Suzuki Swift caught testing in India. EDIT: Launched at Rs. 6.49 lakh

Either you lead the market by being first to launch a new product/upgrade Or you follow the competition. In case of former, market gives you a chance to rectify your errors and omissions. But certainly not to a follower. Logic is simple...if one has got a chance to benchmark all the available products, why market should pardon you for a outdated launch ? 4th Gen Swift is a laggard from Maruti. It lacks appeal and modernity atleast what I could see from the specs/pics on brochure and video.

Maruti had started the trend in the market that if you add 50K on the price of top end, one gets into bottom end of the next car in their lineup. This is becoming an issue for Maruti in positioning their products. With Wagon R on one end and Baleno / Fronx on other, iconic Car like Swift has lost its relevance.

Is it possible to remove that contraption altogether or is it extension of the dashboard itself? Looks horrendous!
