BMW 7 Series 740d M Sport launched at Rs 1.81 crore

BMW has launched a diesel variant of the 7 Series in India. The 740d M Sport is priced at Rs 1.81 crore (ex-showroom) and will be produced locally at BMW’s Chennai plant.

BMW introduced the seventh-generation 7 Series in India back in January this year. Initially, the flagship sedan was only available with a petrol engine. Now though, customers get a diesel option as well, in the form of the 740d M Sport.

The BMW 740d M Sport is powered by a 3.0-litre 6-cylinder diesel engine that puts out 282 BHP @ 4,000 rpm and 650 Nm @ 1,500-2,500 rpm. The engine is paired with a 48V mild-hybrid system that adds another 17 BHP and 200 Nm and an 8-speed automatic transmission.

Like most modern BMWs, the new 7 Series also has a polarizing design featuring a large kidney grille and split headlamps up front. Inside, the car gets a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a 14.9-inch touchscreen infotainment system. Like the i7, the diesel 7 Series also comes with a 31.3-inch 8K monitor at the back and 5.5-inch touchscreens positioned on the rear door handles.

Re: BMW 7 Series 740d M Sport launched at Rs 1.81 crore

BMW are taking the mighty B57 3.0 diesel to new heights with this car. They have added 21 HP compared to the previous gen 730LD and increased torque by 30NM, and all of the 650NM is available from 1500 rpm itself! (Compared to the 620NM kicking in at 620 NM in the previous version).

The addition of the mild hybrid and the bump up in power means this mammoth car reaches 0-100 in merely 6 seconds! This is 0.2 seconds faster compared to the earlier car. The CO2 emissions are actually reduced by 5gm/km compared to the previous generation car despite the bump up in performance.

I just wish this engine and mild hybrid combination becomes available in the yet-to-come 2024 5 series. It would be a real cracker to drive and provide amazing efficiency and acceleration in the smaller car. Alas, global trends seem to indicate a heavy shift to electric with only a measly 4-cylinder petrol engine being available at launch that makes just ~200HP - the stars of the show are the all-electric eDrive 40i and M60i.

However, note that they have not provided the 340PS/700NM tune of the engine available in global markets under the previous gen 740D car. That one does 0-100 in just 5 seconds! I guess the CO2 emission toll from that tune would be too much for BMW India's CAFE targets to bear.

The spec sheet of the new 7 series diesel is attached.

Aren't these specs similar to the 30D engine?

40d should have more juice

Precisely! These are the exact power and torque figures of the 30d with the mild hybrid setup. If I'm not wrong, the facelifted X5 30d with mild hybrid tech also has the same power output. Makes me wonder if BMW somehow botched up the numbers.
