From an enthusiast's point of view, I agree that the AMT is nowhere near as fun as a DSG or even a proper Torque converter. But for what it's designed, as a convenient mode of transport from point A to point B, it serves it's job pretty well. For majority of the public, that's all they want - cheap, frugal and reliable. As a baby step to the world of automatics, it does a fine job.
While the version of AMTs introduced in the 2014 Celerio had issues and many of them were reported in the forum, Maruti has constantly tweaked it with each subsequent iteration. That has certainly helped with the reliability of the box. If you check our thread on Maruti's AMT woes, (Maruti's AMT woes) there has been no activity for quite a while now. Compare that to the posts we still see on DSGs. I'm pretty sure Maruti have sold at least ten times the number of AMTs compared to DSGs of other manufacturers. Moreover, Maruti have made child parts available for most of the unit and there are plenty of videos in YouTube on how to get them serviced, even if there is an issue. As an owner myself, I follow two simple steps to get the most out it.
1. Idling the engine for a minute after starting it takes care of the cold judder which used to be reported in the forum.
2. Always switch to neutral, if stopping for more than 5 seconds
3. AMT fluid is replaced at an interval of 10-15k KM as a DIY.
Maruti has done a commendable job in introducing automatic transmission to the majority of Indian public. Just like they did with small petrol monocoque cars back in the 80s.
