TN Govt is not encouraging BH registration. "Unofficial" orders apparently has gone to all RTO's, not to support BH. Offically a state government cannot say no to BH; but can definitely put up hindrances and adopt a deliberate "go-slow" strategy.
And after this large hike in road tax, one can reasonably guess, that to fill the state coffers, BH will not be pushed at all!

Some things w.r.t. to TN are so odd. On one hand they claim their state's are amongst the best, yet they will not implement citizen friendly initiatives like this. Heck, most private cars in Chennai city do not even have a Pollution Under Control Certificate! Number of Vehicle Pollution checking stations in Chennai city is miniscule, compared to any other metro city! The petrol pump gent, at Egmore, from where i get my PUC done had told me, most Chennai drivers are not even aware that possession of a valid PUC certificate is mandated by law.

Re: Tamil Nadu lifetime road tax slabs significantly increased for cars!

I had voted for Tamil Nadu as the state with the best roads that I have driven on in India on this thread (Which State has the best Highways in India?), and a couple of recent experiences (albeit not self driven) have only added to that. My previous vote was based on driving between Coimbatore and Hosur (as part of the drive from Coimbatore to Bombay), and you could argue that basing a vote on one of the arterial highways of the state may not have been appropriate. But over the last couple of months, I had the opportunity to be driven down both the East Coast road from Madras to Pondicherry and in Southern TN from Madurai to Rameshwaram (actually all the way to Dhanushkodi) - and the experience was outstanding. These are not expressways - just 2 lane or 4 lane highways, but everywhere, the road surface was perfect, lane markings crystal clear, and unlike all the other states I have driven in, you had reflectors on the road markings at every single curve which made night driving a breeze.

Don’t think the people of TN should crib about road tax - or at the very least, come and experience what we Maharashtrians get for our money before you crib.
