September 2023 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Anaysis

NOTES:

1: Thanks to the team at Auto Punditz for sharing these sales numbers with us!

2: Only cars that sell 500+ units (and thus, the relevant ones) have been included in the gainers & losers chart.

3. These manufacturer-reported sales numbers are factory dispatches to dealerships. They are NOT retail sales figures to end customers.

India registers record sales of 3,63,733 cars in September

The Indian auto industry registered its best-ever passenger vehicle sales last month. 3,63,733 cars and SUVs were sold in September, as automakers pushed dealer dispatches to build stocks ahead of the upcoming festivals.

Seven of the 16 car, SUV and MPV manufacturers in India registered combined sales of 3,28,669 units, which is an improvement of 7% over the previous year. 11 other carmakers registered sales of 34,301 units during the same month.

Toyota accounted for 22,168 units, registering the highest YoY growth of 44%, followed by MG Motor India with a 31% improvement in sales. Mahindra had the third-highest growth of 20%. Tata Motors was the only brand among the top 7 to record negative YoY growth during this period.

Passenger vehicle sales have surpassed the 3,25,000-unit mark for the ninth straight month this year, with SUVs and MPVs accounting for most of the total sales.

Over 20 lakh passenger vehicles were sold in the first half of the current fiscal. By the end of September 2023, the industry recorded 20,60,996 units of sales, a YoY growth of 6.41%.

Re: September 2023 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Anaysis

All-time high performanes by Hyundai and Mahindra, the latter now within touching distance of Tata. Exemplary sales of the Scorpio and XUV700 helping it nudge closer to a 11.4% market share. The 2nd, 3rd and 4th places seem to be headed for interesting times.

The Nexon back to its regular performance at the 15k mark, courtesy despatches of the facelift. A drastic fall in Tiago numbers and dips in the Altroz and Tigor bringing the market share down this month. The facelifted Harrier and Safari could drive numbers in the months to come.

The Swift dropping 4k and a few others around 800 each rendering a drop in share for Maruti. I expect Maruti to settle around the 38-40% mark by next year.

Re: September 2023 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Anaysis

I inquired about the Citroën eC3 at a showroom in Chennai last week. They said waiting time 3 months, and maybe 1 month is possible if I am not picky about the variant or colour.

They are shipping < 200 units/month, with a waiting time of 3 months? Why aren't they ramping up? Severe supply issues for battery/motor maybe? Tata EVs on the other hand were mostly in stock and immediately available, including some variants of the new Nexon, and they are shipping over 6000 EV units/month across all models.

Re: September 2023 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Anaysis

1) Timely booster shots by Hyundai to its portfolio paying dividends. Despite its quirks, Exter sales are growing consistently. Tata needs to pull up their socks if they want to regain #2 spot.

2) Mahindra truly is the king of SUVs! Bolero, Scorpio and XUV700 on a roll. How is XUV300 selling ~5k despite a facelift due for ages now?!! Shows that Mahindra have gained credible mind share in the SUV space (despite not having the marketing budgets of others). They really need to ramp up supply to gain market share further. I see the #2 spot as a three way fight between Tata, Hyundai and Mahindra and this bodes well for the Indian customer

3) Sonet sales on a significant decline since July. While some of this could be because of the incoming facelift, the decline also aligns with increased sales of Fronx and Exter. Co-incidence? I think not. Fronx/Exter might be chewing up some numbers of a segment above. The Nexon facelift will push Sonet numbers down further.

4) Market is definitely moving away from Sedans. Amaze and City numbers are not boding well for Honda. They desperately need Elevate to be a sales hit. Verna numbers have also hit a slight bump. The NCAP news should reflect in sales next month, you can bet the Hyundai marketing team would make sure of it. They market Venue and i20 as structurally safe cars so make no mistake, their first safe car per NCAP will be prime bulletin board material for their sales honchos!

5) Jeep showing signs of life? Their 1k target for the Compass might not be that far fetched after all

Re: September 2023 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Anaysis

Thanks to the ever booming Taxi market, the MSIL would continue to have a runaway success with their Taxi products in form of Wagon R, Swift & Ertiga.
Hassle free cheap products, availability of service centers and CNG is added bonus.
With not so much interest from other players for the taxi market apart from Toyota and Hyundai, MSIL would have a free run for next generation too.

Their crowded centers with taxi's, parts availability in the bin, MSIL has completely captured this segment with their products.

Nexon coming back with 15K and Punch doing 13K shows that the faith on these products. Nexon would climb up more with DCA and prices if ignored.

How much ever people whine and crib over AMT's and Tata A$$, the HUUGGGEEE difference between Sonet and Nexon says. Say again, Nexon for Tata is like Innova/Fortuner for Toyota.

The EXTER'ed effect seems to be limited, this moment on the Punch.

Fall in Tiago is clearly that the EV market isnt accepting for Tiago.
Altroz doing healthy numbers around 6K is acceptable.

If Tata can manage to get the Curvv and also utilize the 1.5D engine to get a nice MUV, it would comfortably sit above 55K copies per month.

All they need is a dieted Hexa with 1.5L Diesel Engine with less 1500Kgs of weight. Deal done.

While Maruti, Hyundai etc are trying to go up the market and sell more premium priced vehicles in the 20L + segment, Tata is going in the opposite direction with sub4M small vehicles. Not sure what their strategy is, its a very price conscious segment where you have to fight tooth and nail with Hyundai & Maruti.

The upcoming Curvv is definitely moving into the 20L band. Nexon ICE itself now in the vicinity of 20L and EV crossed 20L long back.

A very price conscious segment is definitely not in 15L segment. Its below 10L and we have less models from Hyundai and Tata. Altroz and Punch have crossed 10L.

With facelifts of Harrier twins, got to see how well they go now.
Whats their future plans in ICE needs to be seen.

Re: September 2023 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Anaysis

I am amazed how markets are captured by different players and how perceptions rule our mind? In Mumbai where I live, upper middle class onwards there is certain amount of hesitancy in going in for cars from Maruti Suzuki even in new car buyer. But, when it comes to tier-2 or tier 3 cities and rural market Maruti is un-disputed king. What fascinates me is how brands develop strategy to beat perceptions and Maruti's attempt to launch Fronx, Grand Vitara et.al and market them as something new enthrals me. They have succeeded upto an extent yet Hyundai Creta has stunning aspirational value in large part of the society with likes of Skoda and Volkswagen trying to grab certain share out of it.

With middle class population on the rise and disposable income increasing, will there be a shift in brand perception? And it will be interesting to see Maruti's new strategy. I feel these car makers will be shifting their focus to higher segments sooner than later and companies like Tata and Mahindra focusing with lower ticket size products and smaller evs. This does not mean Maruti will not focus on mass market products but they will be certainly itchy to get a larger share in the higher segments. I feel coming months are interesting as India and Indian automotive sectors grows. Eager to see car sales figures post this festive season.

Re: September 2023 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Anaysis

  1. What do we read from the Invicto numbers (barely 400 ) while the Toyota's model bringing in close to 9000 copies (Innova included)?
  2. Elevate at 56xx is a good start for Honda . Hope they introduce higher variants - more features, and hybrid as an additional variant as well. Need to keep the interest higher, now that they have the foot in.
