Jeep Compass AT finally coming up in a 2WD variant

Jeep India has shared a teaser video on Instagram about a “Jeep SUV exclusively engineered for India” that is scheduled to be announced/unveiled on 16.09.2023. The caption talks about a Jeep SUV ripping the tarmac.

https://www.instagram.com/reel/Cw5RYP3vv8y/

Posting a few screenshots below of what appears go be the horn pad of a steering wheel and the front left fender and bumper around the headlamp.

Considering that no spyshots have been shared till date, this could either be a new Jeep car announcement (rather than a launch), or a new variant/ engine for an existing model (Compass is lacking a petrol engine since the past few months, hurting its sales).

Although it's not, I wish they bring the Jeep Avenger soon.

"There have been rumours of Jeep bringing the Avenger to India. Some industry chatter at the GIIAS has hinted that Jeep is working on bringing the Avenger to India."

Jeep to launch Compass 2WD Automatic on September 16

According to a media report, Jeep is gearing up to launch more affordable variants of the Compass automatic this month. The 2-wheel-drive version of the Compass is said to get an automatic option. It is likely to be launched on September 16, 2023.

As per the latest report, Jeep could offer five variants of the Compass 2WD AT, starting with the Longitude trim expected to be offered at an on-road price of Rs 27 lakh.

The Longitude+ variant is likely to get features such as a panoramic sunroof and wireless charging. The SUV will also be available in Limited and Limited Black Shark edition trims.

The Model S will remain the top-spec variant in the Compass line-up. Interestingly, the report mentions that the 2WD automatic option will be available in the top trim as well.

The SUV is also likely to get minor cosmetic updates, including a new grille and alloy wheels. Select dealerships have reportedly started accepting bookings unofficially.

Says a JEEP SUV exclusively engineered for India, and then shows the lights of a Compass.

Guess the exclusivity maybe for the introduction of an engine designed specifically for India in RHD. Since the 2.4l NA petrol engine is already being made in India and exported, guess the exclusive for India engine would be the 1.3l turbo petrol sans the electric motor of the 4Xe hybrid.

27 Lakhs is hardly an affordable price point. I think they are just moving the product into an upper segment and making space for something below.

Even accounting for inflation and increasing input costs, the entry sport trim available earlier in Petrol AT guise under 20L was attractive. Any variant above 25 Lac with missing essential features will be unattractive from the launch itself. Otherwise the product should have compelling USP that offsets these shortcomings.

Looks like the arrogance and '4x4 DNA' marketing spiel at Jeep India has finally worn off. They are now doing what they should have done years ago.

re: Jeep Compass AT finally coming up in a 2WD variant

Diesel AT without the 4x4! Jeep should have done it a long time ago and i would have saved a few lakhs! I had to buy the 4x4 Diesel AT last year even though i had no real use case for AWD, just because there was no option to buy just the Diesel AT. I mean, the Meridian had this option from launch, so I’m not sure why Jeep did not have this option with the Compass.

Anyway, I hope this sort of gives a short term boost for Jeep’s dwindling sales in India. Cause the Compass and the Meridian are truly fantastic products, fundamentally very strong in all aspects.

While ‘Jeep SUV ripping the tarmac’ hints at a 4x2 SUV, ‘Jeep SUV exclusively engineered for India’ is quite misleading if Jeep is just adding some more variants of an existing car!

As if the 4x2 automatic Compass is/was not/never offered in the foreign markets.

re: Jeep Compass AT finally coming up in a 2WD variant

I am guessing this will be the 1.3 Petrol variant with Hybrid or Strong Hybrid? Or maybe Diesel 4X2 AT or maybe both. We need 4xe from Jeep and the sub 4 meter SUV with 4X4.

I hope this launch will silence the people who keep on posting "Jeep will leave India and will follow Fiat" comments every time Jeep discontinues a variant or model

re: Jeep Compass AT finally coming up in a 2WD variant

While the introduction of 4x2 Diesel AT is a welcome step by Jeep, I hope they also do
1. Equip the starting variants (Sport/Longitude) better. Just for 6 airbags, we shouldn't need to pay 4L extra.
2. Share details about their Future product roadmap and Petrol re-introduction plans.

Isn't it time for the next generation Compass? If I remember right, it was launched in 2017 and completed 6+ years. And that is the normal time to ready the next gen model.

A case of too little, too late!
This is something Jeep should've had in their portfolio on Day 1 of launch.

And by how much is it going to be cheaper?! At the most 2L or thereabouts.
The fact is Compass has fallen off the radar of most of the car buying public.

Consider this:-
On Road price of XUV 7OO AX7L 2WD in Mumbai - 30L
On Road price of Compass Limited O 4WD in Mumbai - 36L

Even if you knock out 3L off for the Compass 2WD version, which car do you think is gonna sell more....
Mind you, the XUV is bigger in every sense & an 5 star NCAP rated car

This is the reason, getting your product spread right is very important!

Powertrain

FCA shambles continue nonetheless. After claiming themselves to be on par with the German luxury brands and hiking prices incessantly with little to no addition of features, now they have realized they need to plug the gap they left behind in their erstwhile price market they moved out of

re: Jeep Compass AT finally coming up in a 2WD variant

This is funny. Especially if you go back to the interview Hormazd Sorabjee (Autocar) did with the new India head for Jeep, where he refused to answer if Jeep was planning any launch of petrol and non 4x4 models looking at the gap in their portfolio.
