Re: Which Car Manufacturer combo is in your household AND would you change it?

My current cars:
2022 Force Gurkha SWB BS6, the area where I live has some very bad roads, and the Gurkha has been a boon. Nowadays, I never exceed 100kmph and the Gurkha is pretty comfortable between 80-100kmph. With the Gurkha I am able to maintain better average speeds as i am able to judge the traffic owing to its height. The height factor plays spoilt sport though, especially while taking the Gurkha to malls. This is one of the reasons I didn't opt for the roof rack. The Gurkha has fairly been reliable, apart from the front axle oil seal failure which happened twice.
Would i change? Probably yes as my family is about to expand, maybe something more practical, either a Crysta or the N as I need a BOF for the bad roads.
2014 Maruti Suzuki Wagon R VXi, preowned. This was a super quick purchase. Was getting a Brio too but thought of buying something more practical. The Wagon R plays all the roles barring highway runs, from getting the groceries, taking my wife to the hospital for her checkups, ferrying my aged parents or going to the mall, the Wagon R has never failed to fulfil its intent. Recently we shifted to our new home and I was able to shift a ton of stuff comfortably, all thanks to its 60:40 split seats which comfortably swallowed our 55in TV. Moreover the Wagon R being a very common car doesn't attract any attention, hence stays incognito. Spare availability has not been a problem. Recently I got the steering Rack and engine mounts changed at bhpian Asit Kulkarni's workshop, all the spares were procured in 20 min flat.
Would I change, yes. Being a Maruti, it's a tin can for sure, hate the suspension and steering, doesn't have ABS or air bags. I might pick a safe AT car.

Re: Which Car Manufacturer combo is in your household AND would you change it?

I have a Toyota and a Hyundai. Happy with both of them. Except for ABS sensor replacements in the first year, the Hyundai has been trouble-free for the last 9 years. The Toyota is two years old and has not given me any trouble yet. Other than the scheduled yearly visits, I haven't seen the service centres. So I have decided to stay with these brands for the foreseeable future unless something very tempting comes. Jimny is the only car that has tempted me ever my last car purchase two years ago.

Re: Which Car Manufacturer combo is in your household AND would you change it?

My current cars:

1. 2000 Ohc Vtec- Bone stock, apart from having
a. Front and back strut bars
b. Rear disc conversion from the city sold in Thailand and
c. The tyres changed from the stock 175 to 195/60/14's.

2. 2002 Ohc Vtec - Plonked a EK Civic Type R engine in 2011 and went turbo on it in 2019.

a. Fully built engine (hand built by me)
b. Has front and rear strut bars
c. Coilovers
d. Rear disc conversion from the city sold in Thailand
e. Standalone engine management system, pauter x beam forged rods, bigger injectors, greddy turbo, turbosmart wastegate, GFB blow off etc etc
f. Werks Forged lightweight alloys
g. 205/55/15 S-drives

3. 2013- Mk6 Jetta HL - My favourite mile muncher! Use only on highways and for some spirited weekend drives.

4. 2017 X1 Xdrive 20d Msport - The most boring of the lot, for the wifey, but I'm forced to drive it as its just been standing and barely racked up any kms..(south of 26k)

5. 2016 -CBR 650F
a. Full system Akrapovic exhaust
b. Michelin Road5 and a 190 section rear
c. R&G accessory all around
d. etc etc... lol!

I'm not a SUV person, however, wife needed something automatic, higher gc, space and comfort for the rear passengers. We were out to get the X3, however, the X3 was too big for my wife to drive and park in my apartment, either the apartment pillars would have broken or the car! Hence got the x1 Msport as both m kid and wife liked it. If need to change, would change only this one thing..( think my wife would kick me if I were to do this though).

Re: Which Car Manufacturer combo is in your household AND would you change it?

Kia Sonet D-AT - I drive it primarily. Except the average FE everything works great in this car. Engine and Gearbox combo is absolutely amazing. Just completed 2 years and I plan to keep it till 7 years of its age.

Tiago Diesel- Primarily driven by my father and sometimes my wife drives it too. Completed 5.5 years and will keep it for another year and half. It has been reliable so far even though it's used a little rough. Most probably will change it with Tiago Ev/Punch EV or Punch petrol or something similar at that point of time. I had atleast one Tata with us since 2005 so I have a fair idea how to deal with them so no worries with that aspect.

Re: Which Car Manufacturer combo is in your household AND would you change it?

At the moment, we have a Japanese biased garage with 3 Japs & 2 Germans - a welcome break from the all German garage we had in 2011 when we brought home the Liva.

Overall, it's a welcome change!
With dad not driving any longer, it's only me and my wife who drive at home.

What we realized is that half the cars are chauffeur driven where we don't care about features, performance, or handling - we just want a safe, no-nonsense, comfortable car to ferry us around in the city and that's where the Japs have excelled.

The plan is to have 2 chauffeur driven cars (ES, Corolla) which are safe and comfortable with low maintenance and low headaches, 1 purely self driven car (at the moment the C Class), and 2 mixed use cars which see chauffeur & self driven (Tiguan which I use for highways, areas with poor road access; and the S-Cross).

Re: Which Car Manufacturer combo is in your household AND would you change it?

Last 15 years, Maruti has been a constant with the Esteem, 800, Swift, SX4, Dzire, Brezza and latest is the Baleno.

The partners of the cars till 2014 have been the Tata Indica (2 times) and Hyundai i10.

Since 2014 it's been Honda with the City.

Maruti is driven by house members so prefer it given it's no nonsense and even if something goes wrong no one will blame me!

The Honda might get changed to another Honda (if Elevate is any good) or then Kia / Hyundai / M&M / Toyota.

Re: Which Car Manufacturer combo is in your household AND would you change it?

Current Garage :
1. 2014 Honda City SV Petrol Manual
2. 2012 Toyota Innova VX diesel 7-seater.

Am happy with my current garage, but I need a small car for urban duties as parking space is really getting scant at most places.

If I were to get a new car, it would be Baleno and I would sell off City. Innova can continue its duty as a highway mile munching car.

Re: Which Car Manufacturer combo is in your household AND would you change it?

I have an all Korean garage

1. Kia Seltos HTX IVT Petrol Sep 2022
2. Hyundai Verna 4S Petrol AT May 2015
3. Grand i10 Magna AT April 2018 (replaced a March 2009 model Hyundai i10 Magna AT)

Is this an ideal combo - No , but thankfully it has been a fuss free ownership experience.

Ironically, I never wanted to buy any of these cars, other than the Verna. Had booked the Hyundai Tucson 2022 model; but uncertainty over delivery and my desperation to save some tax on company car lease made me look elsewhere. Skoda had already announced plans on discontinuing the Octavia, so reluctantly ended up with an IVT Seltos which was readily available.

I was happily retaining the 2009 i10 as a second car. During one of the periodic services, I got an unbelievable exchange price (almost 3.5 Lacs for a 9 year old car) and ended up exchanging that for a 2018 Grand i10.

I will finish the Seltos lease in 2024 and hopefully will then buy something that my mind desires.

Re: Which Car Manufacturer combo is in your household AND would you change it?

So our garage used to be quite varied

1. Punto
2. Polo
3. Sx4 (now sold)
4. Civic 8th gen
5. City 5th gen

Sx4 has been replaced by city. Soon Punto and Polo would also be sold due to NGT.

One thing I'm trying to do is look for a good second hand deal. The next car for sure won't be Honda. This is purely because I'm bored of Honda. Nothing can replace the Europeans when it comes to the driving pleasure and ideally the hatches would be replaced with something Euro or American.

Re: Which Car Manufacturer combo is in your household AND would you change it?

While it's really good to see garages of the fellow Bhp members but I think most of us have skipped the "would you change it?" part.

Having said that, I own a VW Polo TSI (M) and boy I love it and I don't want to change it. This is going to stay for a long time, maybe till the end of it's life and who knows, it may share garage with more Germans in the future

Re: Which Car Manufacturer combo is in your household AND would you change it?

Till early this year, the combo in our garage used to be a Ford Endeavour 3.2 for those huge, cross country road trips we take. And a 2013 WagonR for all the city runabouts where the Endeavour was just too large to take. Then, diesel anxiety kicked in (the Endeavour turned 6), VW GT stole my heart, Maruti showcased the Jimny and in quick succession, everything changed.
The Endeavour was traded in for a cherry red Virtus GT and the WagonR was replaced b a Jimny mid-year.
So now, I have the 7-speed DSG for open highways and the nimble Jimny for city runabouts and trips like the one to Umling La we just concluded. Never going back to diesels. I guess I have the best of both worlds now - thrills and hills.

Re: Which Car Manufacturer combo is in your household AND would you change it?

Current garrage sports a M&M +MS combo - a 2019 XUV300 D aka Shadow, and a pre-owned 2019 Baleno Alpha aka Frosty, which I picked up for wife last year.

Shadow is my daily driver and I love her to bits. She takes me places and shows me a good time - all the time! She gobbles up bad roads and I don't even spill my coffee. You press the pedal and you can feel her pounce ahead. Only grime is the AMT, although it's pretty refined and I have gotten used to it. But this is probably going to be my last AMT... Ever.

Frosty on the other hand is has a CVT and needs the patience of a parent. I generally take her during weekends trips to the mall and maybe a short drive through the beautiful and perpetually "under construction" roads. She is very honest and will tell you everything, even the smallest of pebbles will be felt. She is very sophisticated and will purr a lot if you press the pedal hard, and that's about it. She knows better than you and will increase her speed when she wants to.

While there is absolutely no reasonable explanation for me to change any time soon, but I am having a terrible itch to get a proper SUV. All I am saying is if a used Fortuner or a Pajero shows up in my garrage, we will have to put the blame on my premature mid life crisis

Re: Which Car Manufacturer combo is in your household AND would you change it?

Between 2015 and 2020 the garage was heavily skewed towards Mercedes. Right from the S-Class W222 to the CLA. Their designs and products in my opinion were better than equivalent BMWs or Audis. However, I must add that this made it a bit boring and a bit too familiar.
Ironically the phase before 2015, right from 2007 was skewed more towards BMW!

I now strive to keep a healthy mix of brands. Currently, the garage has all 3 Germans and even had a JLR which left to give space to a BMW. There is even a Lexus.

Going forward I think I enjoy keeping a variety of brands so each car feels different. Would also try not to keep two body styles of the same brand as that creates further monotony even if they are higher or lower segments. For example, a Q5 and Q7 even though totally different price ranges and sizes feel very similar inside due to shared parts and design elements.

While the Innova twins are great machines, the let down is the service centres here. Unauthorised interior cleaning with some obnoxious smelling fluids, inter-changing of brake pads with brake pads of other older vehicles compelling us to replace the brake pads every 10k or 20k kilometres being among them. Had to complain to upper management as well as to Toyota to get resolutions.

Problem with Toyota dealerships here at least (not sure about other places, so will not comment) is that because their cars are owned by many influential and powerful people, they are least bothered about cars owned by not-so-powerful people. Only when mails are sent to Toyota do they really bother to properly talk to you.

Re: Which Car Manufacturer combo is in your household AND would you change it?

Current Cars (back home with my parents in Bangalore) - 2017 Honda City ZX CVT Petrol and 2011 Toyota Innova 2.5 V Diesel.

Usually we replace cars around the 12 year or 200,000km mark and the Innova is close to both (184,000km approximately and car will turn 12 around July 2024). If we were to replace this with a 7 Seater the only real option I see is the new gen KIA Carnival Diesel AT which is going to be 40L+ for the top model (yikes). But they don't really need a 7 seater anymore as it's only my mother and father, family members moved out and I moved to Mumbai for college. If it's gonna be a 5 seat SUV then it's most likely going to be VW Tiguan.

The Honda City is sitting at around 92,000km at the moment and I don't see my parents replacing that car for another 4 years minimum. Although if I could go back to 2017 and choose I'd ask for 2017 Skoda Rapid Monte Carlo 1.5 TDI MT.

If you ask me I think one car is enough for my parents, an entry level Luxury SUV or Sedan would serve them well until 2030.

On the Sedan side I'm biased towards the BMW 330i/330Li because of the Engine, RWD and overall driving dynamics although the Audi A4 is also a solid option and much cheaper. The Toyota Camry Hybrid is a solid option if they don't want a flashy Luxury badge and want to keep it lowkey.

On the SUV side the top picks are the Volvo XC40 and Audi Q3. VW Tiguan if they want to keep it lowkey and Mini Countryman if they want something unique.
