Mahindra Global Pik Up: A Close Look

“I was born in India but was made in South Africa” - Mahatma Gandhi. Starting with the Thar in 2020, followed up with the XUV700 in 2021 and finally the ScorpioN in 2022 - Mahindra has consistently unveiled new products on every Independence Day, over the past few years. This year, however, there are no imminent launches. Instead, the event previewed a "Go Global" theme for Mahindra - showcasing future products and global vision for their farm and auto divisions! With Gandhiji's abovementioned phrase in mind, a global venue of Cape Town, South Africa was selected for this "Mahindra Futurescape".

The showstopper unveiled is the new Global Pik Up that shoulders the responsibility of expanding Mahindra's international exposure! Targeting new potential markets in ASEAN, Australia, South Africa, South & Central America and India, the concept will spawn a production version (Codename Z121) in 2025.

Mahindra believes they have the right fundamentals in place now for global expansion with presence across 25 countries, 4 overseas ventures in Europe, South Africa, Australia & Sri Lanka, presence across LHD and RHD markets and manufacturing / assembling capabilities across countries like the USA, Tunisia, Kenya, South Africa and Sri Lanka in addition to the mother plants in India. The company also believes that its current SUV portfolio has set the right fundamentals for a global audience with powertrain options, safety, design and technology. New products like the Global Pik Up will be tasked to take it forward:

Designed by the Mahindra India Design Studio (MIDS) - Mahindra claims the new Global Pik Up is designed based on 5 principles - Tough, Versatile, Capable, Techy and Safe:
Mahindra Global Pik Up: A Close Look-dsc05889.jpg

Dubbed 'Heartcare Design', Mahindra claims it to be "Modern, Functional Detail, Robust and Bold":
Mahindra Global Pik Up: A Close Look-dsc06114.jpg

One may not too be too far-fetched in calling this the ScorpioN Pik Up. It shares the same platform and the front end is similar too, which may not be a bad thing in this case!
Mahindra Global Pik Up: A Close Look-dsc06172.jpg

A closer look at the headlamp which has an identical shape, but different internal elements in this concept form:
Mahindra Global Pik Up: A Close Look-20230815_172616.jpg

The large grille is very unique and quite unlike Mahindra designs so far! This also lends it a very butch stance. Mahindra has also stayed clear of the usual "Jeep" inspiration as the product is targeting the United States as a prime region. No comments on the material used and finish of the grille since this is only a concept, but there is definite scope for improvement here. Mahindra also showcased a functional winch with the load capacity mentioned:
Mahindra Global Pik Up: A Close Look-dsc06171.jpg

Muscular bonnet gets rugged design elements maybe as a differentiator from the SUV. Under the bonnet, the concept packs the familiar Gen-II mHawk all-aluminum diesel engine, which will be made available with two transmission options - a 6-speed manual or an AISIN sourced 6-speed automatic. There was no mention of a petrol engine option during this unveil:
Mahindra Global Pik Up: A Close Look-dsc06165.jpg

Side profile is where Mahindra design has really pulled an ace out of its sleeve. The car looks proportionately designed and not like an add-on to the ScorpioN. It's not very edgy in design like earlier pickups from Mahindra, but the design should be well received by the customer base. No specific mention was made about the wheelbase, but it looks significantly stretched in comparison to the SUV:
Mahindra Global Pik Up: A Close Look-dsc06100.jpg

Proportionate is the first word that came to mind when the Pik Up rolled onto the stage. With its double cab styling - the large load area looks well-designed with spot-on proportions. Mahindra claims the Pik Up has been designed to meet the needs of off-road enthusiasts and commuters as well as those looking at such vehicles for adventure camping:
Mahindra Global Pik Up: A Close Look-dsc06139.jpg

Little to fault with the design when viewed from the side. Mahindra claims that the designing has been done with structural safety being given maximum importance and that the Pik Up will get 5-star rating in Latin NCAP and ANCAP along with Global NCAP when launched:
Mahindra Global Pik Up: A Close Look-dsc05866.jpg

The concept was equipped with a snorkel which was neatly integrated into the design. Off-roading features include a 4WD system with shift-on-the fly, 4L, 4H and terrain (grass, gravel, mud, snow, rut, sand) based mode selection:
Mahindra Global Pik Up: A Close Look-dsc06145.jpg

Mirrors could be shared with the ScorpioN:
Mahindra Global Pik Up: A Close Look-dsc06163.jpg

Conventional pull-type door handles and no retractable wizardry as with the XUV700:
Mahindra Global Pik Up: A Close Look-dsc06166.jpg

The glass area. Mahindra design stickers at multiple places on the concept - this one near the A-pillar says "Global Pik Up. Designed in India. For the World":
Mahindra Global Pik Up: A Close Look-dsc06140.jpg

Ground clearance looks very good and the concept looked raised in comparison to the ScorpioN. Much needed side steps to climb into the car:
Mahindra Global Pik Up: A Close Look-dsc06164.jpg

MIDS (Mahindra India Design Studio) stickering on the LHS rear fender:
Mahindra Global Pik Up: A Close Look-20230815_172523.jpg

Nice looking 5-spoke alloys fitted with beefy 285/65 R18 tyres. No comments on drum or disc brakes, as the concept was not fitted with any!
Mahindra Global Pik Up: A Close Look-dsc06125.jpg

Tail-gate is clean except for the large embossed "Mahindra" lettering. Functional tow hooks are provided on either side. 4XPLOR badge hints at off-roading capabilities. 4WD that is claimed to be standard on the Pik Up:
Mahindra Global Pik Up: A Close Look-dsc06108.jpg

Tail-lamps use the same design theme as the headlamps, with the vertical LEDs extending into the fog lamps which are placed on the bumper:
Mahindra Global Pik Up: A Close Look-dsc06113.jpg

Wraparound tail-lamps are very nearly executed:
Mahindra Global Pik Up: A Close Look-dsc06120.jpg

Mahindra claims the design elements are just as functional as they are aesthetic - the fog lamp recess also doubles up as steps to climb in to the loading bay:
Mahindra Global Pik Up: A Close Look-dsc06123.jpg

The loading bay:
Mahindra Global Pik Up: A Close Look-dsc06130.jpg

Loading capacity was not mentioned. area was not revealed through the use of this fake cover. Sharing for size perspective:
Mahindra Global Pik Up: A Close Look-dsc06132.jpg

Vertical rear windshield, as is the case with most pickups:
Mahindra Global Pik Up: A Close Look-dsc06160.jpg

Although the mechanicals underneath were not sorted, the concept suggested that the spare wheel will be mounted underneath the car:
Mahindra Global Pik Up: A Close Look-dsc06167.jpg

With such a brightly coloured stage and lot of lights all around, capturing the interior was impossible and not very relevant as the same was covered with a board. Judging from the proportions (and at the risk of jumping to conclusions too early) legroom at the rear could be just adequate:
Mahindra Global Pik Up: A Close Look-20230815_174741.jpg

Similar story at the front with respect to capturing the image, but the top of the dashboard hints at the interior being shared with the ScorpioN:
Mahindra Global Pik Up: A Close Look-dsc06162.jpg

Some of the technical features of the Pik UP were also revealed, although the details could change closer to the launch. The car will feature drive modes (Zip, Zap, Zoom and Custom), an immersive audio experience (no mention of the brand involved here) and a sunroof. New features will include 5G connectivity and semi-automatic parking along with Level-2 ADAS features. Safety features will include "all-around airbags", drowsy driver detection, trailer-sway mitigation, etc.

Further details are expected closer to the launch in 2025.

Disclaimer: Mahindra invited Team-BHP for the unveil of the Global Pik Up in Cape Town, South Africa. They covered all the travel expenses for this driving event.

Like the fact that Mahindra is not shying away from displaying it's roots from India unlike say SAIC which had to hide behind MG's British lineage.

Re: Mahindra Global Pik Up: A Close Look

Looks good. Nothing path breaking and is very generic in the metal panel designs. It could have been a Tacoma or Ranger or anything with just the grill and tail lamps changed !

Whoever designed this concept, they DESERVE a raise!

This pick up is sexy as a Raptor, but, truly stands out as an Indian

I really hope the production version looks or stays true to the concept!

Re: Mahindra Global Pik Up: A Close Look

A well priced Mahindra pick-up could well be the first made and designed in India vehicle that puts Indian manufacturers on the globe.

Even when Tata bought JLR, it added nothing to their global ambition or TaMo brand globally.

Looks great..!! The loading bay is designed and tailored in much better way than older Scorpio getaway which felt like a cut paste job. Whole car looks and feels modern to the last bit. I sometimes wonder if this is the same mahindra which designed KuV 100

Re: Mahindra Global Pik Up: A Close Look

After so much waiting and wishing, the production version of this concept could be THE watershed moment for lifestyle pickups in India.

If and when this product is launched in India, it could make lifestyle pickups a choice for the Indian middle class - something that is much needed to bring in the sales volume needed to make a product a success in India.

I wish for Tata also to take a step forward with an updated product to carry forward the legacy(?) of the Xenon. Something that could aspire to be another household choice.

Yes. Pratap Bose and his team with MIDS, India. (In comparison, the Thar.e was designed by the Oxfordshire team.

Re: Mahindra Global Pik Up: A Close Look

Hats off to Mahindra for sticking to this old dying DNA of brutish engineering & churning out products that nobody else seems to be bothered about here in India. Regardless of what the end product may be - as a naive fan of mechanical engineering - I just loved this concept and my respect for Mahindra's honest & whole-hearted commitment to its line of business took another step up.

Bose - seems to be working his charm afterall. Looking at the spy-shots of the facelift Nexon - The charm sure went along with the man!

Re: Mahindra Global Pik Up: A Close Look

After a long time, Mahindra gave a non polarizing design. No funky stuff like XUV700 and no Jeep inspired elements. A good clean design with a please all atitude.
Mahindra has kept everyone excited over the years and the results are there in form of long line of people waiting with cheques in hand.
Just, launch this thing in India and see how people lap it up. There are many who wanted something of this sort but didn't find Hilux or Isuzu to be worth the money and Xenon was too utilitarian.
Let's keep our fingers crossed and hope that the production version is very close to the concept.

This truck is up against Hilux, F150, RAM, and Chevrolets. It better drive as well as it looks, and last long and beyond the competition.

Mahindra has played with its Bolero - Scorpio platform for over 30 years. They should come out of their comfort zone and be the first car maker in India to try a V6 petrol/gasoline engine (NA & Turbo) along with a stronger and stiffer chassis.

They have nothing to loose and a lot to gain with respect & recognition in the international market space. This truck is not going to sell in lakhs inside India (pricing will easily be 30+Lacs). If they are going to compete outside India, they might as well start thinking upwards of a 250+Bhp truck.

There surely is a considerable diesel market too in Rural Africa and South America and Australia, they can play with the XUV700 diesel pot, oversize the 2.2ltr to maybe 2.5ltr and exceed 215bhp thus putting it in the Hilux base range.

But for sure, M&M is on the right track, if only they see the potential to do something new before anyone catches up.

Re: Mahindra Global Pik Up: A Close Look

Although the concept looks good and pretty close to production levels, the depressed squares on various parts of the body would be a nightmare to clean and maintain. On a car that is expected to see mud regularly, this is a weird oversight. The bottom part of the square should at least have a slight slope so that water does not accumulate which could result in fading or even rust (if its metal).

If it was a really high end truck, I would expect them to provide a water flow mechanism where the owner could put a hose in one slot on the top of the panel and the water would flow to all the squares thereby cleaning them. I know wishful thinking, but would be a pretty cool thing to add.
