Creta-rivaling Proton X50 SUV caught testing in India

Proton could be either testing X50 for India or even re-evaluating the market in general. Or even just testing feasibility of X50’s platform, while an Indian-ised vehicle is in the pipeline. Speaking of platform, X50 gets BMA modular platform that Geely and Volvo jointly developed. In Proton, this platform bears RHD layout for Malaysia and other ASEAN markets.

It is a compact SUV measuring 4330 mm in length, 1800 mm in width, 1609 mm in height and has a 2600 mm wheelbase. If launched in India, it would rival Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara, Toyota Urban Cruiser Hycross, MG Astor, Skoda Kushaq, VW Taigun and upcoming Honda Elevate and Citroen C3 Aircross. In terms of design, it seems to be inspired by Vauxhall’s design language. It is striking and presents a good appeal. On the inside too, it is logically laid out and looks par for the segment as well.

If you remember this car was caught parked in a TATA's R&D facility. They had imported it to benchmark a new car that was for the blackbird project.

People who took pictures of the car then assumed they snapped the blackbird. But later it was debunked as they recognised it a Proton X50 imported by TATA motors for benchmarking purposes.

MH14 is Pimpri Chichwad where TATA motors plant is located.

Re: Creta-rivaling Proton X50 SUV caught testing in India

I had the oppurtunity to drive Proton Saga as a rental when i visited Malaysia 10 years ago. It was a 1.10 lac kms old car but ran well and was tight.

I was in my mind comparing it to our own Indigo/Manza and it surely felt much better. The only place where they were lacking was design, hope they are much better now as the look of the car will be crucial in our market.

Re: Creta-rivaling Proton X50 SUV caught testing in India

On my trip to Malaysia last year I was there for 2 month and was used to see these on road. Proton is offering X50 and X70 as their SUV line-up, and boy-oh-boy they are equipped with features.
Proton cars look and feel really well put together products.
Proton and Perodua are home grown Malaysian car brands with quite good cars under their roof. I used to call Proton X50 as Malaysian Nexon.

Proton can work in India

Considering it is owned by Geely. They can price their cars aggressively against the competition.

Also, it makes sense for Geely to enter Indian market using this brand as out government most likely won't allow future investment from any China-based companies
