June 2023 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

NOTES:

1: Thanks to the team at Auto Punditz for sharing these sales numbers with us!

2: Only cars that sell 500+ units (and thus, the relevant ones) have been included in the gainers & losers chart.

3. These manufacturer-reported sales numbers are factory dispatches to dealerships. They are NOT retail sales figures to end customers.

Jeep is on the ventilator and it appears like nothing can save them. They had an opportunity to launch the Jeep Renegade or whatever CSUV they had planned in the hot 10 to 20 lakhs segment, but they blew it. Probably, they would bring it on their next India 3.0 plan.

Honda City sales have decreased as a result of the upcoming Elevate. Finally, Honda's fear of cannibalization is happing. It seems that Elevate is a stronger competitor to City than its actual competitors.

Sad to see the sales figures of Compass and Meridian. Both capable products ruined by optimistic pricing and greedy price hikes by Jeep India over the last year. If Jeep can better equip the base Compass variant, give it the Diesel FWD AT, and maybe give the 2.4 Tigershark Petrol engine (used for exports), they can surely recover some of the volumes lost due to Petrol engine discontinuation.

Re: June 2023 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Ciaz sees a juve upswing. Is it due to any sarkari order ?
Altroz gets a bump and CNG could be a reason. An EV avatar would take it to 10K easily.

MSIL top selling variants could be in the taxi market with CNG.
Brezza and Fronx settling among themselves.

Gap remains same between 2nd and 3rd and might widen with Exter launch.

Punch and Nexon have a separate fan base. Continuous 10K+ is not an easy feat.
AMT isn't a matter to common junta as much as safety to Suzuki brigade. Left leg remains relaxed.

Rate to see MSIL on top losers section. And finally welcome to the charts JIMNY.

Re: June 2023 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Honda numbers are down but its safe to assume that all likely Honda customers are waiting for Elevate.

Toyota is doing wonders with Innova and Hycross.

Kia has captured MUV market really well with Carens. Hope Mahindra/Tata will come to this segment soon.

Nissan/Renault badly need new models.

Skoda/Vw are doing just average. I wish they introduce a new sub-4m crossover with 1 liter tsi engine to take advantage of taxes. It can easily disrupt the segment.

I personally feel Wagon-R is an expensive choice for what it offers, but it always top the charts. May be I'm wrong.

- Two-wheeler market anticipates continued economic pressures and supply challenges, while the reduction in FAME subsidies casts a shadow over EV sales.

- Average inventory for PV ranges from 45-49 days.

- Average inventory for 2W ranges from 20-25 days.

Re: June 2023 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Interesting data. Some observations:

1) Market up nearly 5% (14k k units) YOY. If that sustains through the year, would be a sign we are back on a sustainable growth trajectory.

2) Maruti accounts for c 80% of incremental industry volumes, Toyota for 50%, Mahindra for over 40% and Tata for c 15%. Kia, Renault and Skoda are the biggest losers. The Maruti - Toyota alliance is rocking and should do even better with the Invicto launch.

3) Why is Toyota not sharing Hycross sales data separately - the Innova and the Hycross are clearly very different and it makes no sense to club them.

4) Have said this before but we should relook at our segment classification. The catch all called Utility must go. And Electric Vehicles should also be segmented rather than being clubbed into Premium.

Re: June 2023 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Can anyone help me understand why/how Toyota Fortuner is still generating good volumes despite so much noise regarding diesel getting banned, being overpriced, lack of features, etc? Pretty solid volumes in the last six months. Maybe there is no competitor in the market for the Fortuner, or Toyota is doing something really good.

Direct competitor Gloster is a failed product going by the volumes, a good opportunity for Kia, Hyundai, or other OEMs to launch a proper seven-seater in a 45-55 lakh price bracket. Hyundai Palisade, or Kia Telluride maybe??

I thought MSIL priced it more than Toyota. But I see the Grand Vitara sells three times more than Toyota Sibling. Why?

Re: June 2023 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

What's happening at Citroen? They seem to have got their India start completely wrong. The C3 is dragging its feet. C3 electric looks to be dead on arrival. So is C5. I'm surprised that OEMs go ahead and invest millions in India without really understanding the pulse of the Indian market.

Looks like stylish looks + balanced powertrain (I mean power vs efficiency)+ 'comfort' oriented suspension + bells and whistles + wide after sales network along with a USP such as 5-star GNCAP rating (Tata, Mahindra, VW/Skoda) or stellar fuel efficiency (Maruti) or segment first features (Hyundai/Kia) or bullet proof reliability (Toyota, Honda) is the key to success.

European strategy of focus on power, handling, complex transmissions, chassis and suspension, solid build while experimenting with features and giving low priority to after sales service is not working, but they don't seem to learn.
