I think other than the safety aspect what also works for the Nexon is that it is at the end of the day a very competent and well-engineered product. I have driven both a Sonet iMT (Venue's cousin) and a Nexon extensively and despite the lesser number of features in the Nexon (it was the mid version) the Nexon was just more sorted and comfortable than the Sonet. This, despite the 3 cylinder engine which makes its presence felt at the time of starting. I have not driven a Brezza but found the Nexon to be far superior on the fundamentals (ride, handling, build quality, power, efficiency) than the Sonet.

Jeep as usual is in doldrums!
Suzuki had its planned maintenance shut down in the month of June. So, dispatches would be down for sure.

Even with attractive models, I have no idea what Jeep's plans are for India. Maybe India is just a base for manufacturing for exports.

Jeep is going the FIAT way. They need to bring in newer models and price them moderately.

Tata is on a roll. Nexon is a very capable product. Features, variants on offer, engine options and safety makes it an all round product in sub 4 meter segment. One of the few cars from Tata's stable that is niggle free. A proper AT paired with diesel engine will further boost the sales figures.

It is depressing to see Honda City’s numbers even after the facelift. Clearly, the facelift did not live up to the expectations of the public. Honda should learn a thing or two about learning the pulse of the market from Kia. But is it too late already?

City numbers are indeed alarming. Honda should really worry, unless the upcoming SUV does > 5k monthly.

Compass has hit another new low. Infact Kodiaq is doing almost same numbers. It’s clearly showing Compass is over priced for what it offers. As much as I like Compass it does not have a clear USP for prospective buyers.

>8,000 dispatches of the Innova Twins is something for a semi luxury people mover that costs north of 25 to 30lacs! Thats almost half the dispatches of the highest moving vehicle, the Wagon R. Says a lot about brand (or model) loyalty.

When I bought the Tucson two months back, the Service Center head told me that being a CKD, the annual sales target of Hyundai for Tucson is 5,000 units. I think they are doing fine going by his statement. As far as discounts are concerned, they are already available on Tucson. I got a good approx 1.5lakhs discount during the purchase.

All others in the segment are doing more, even the almost a decade old Ciaz.

Production constraints? Or getting ready for the Elevate production?

Re: June 2023 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Was surprised to see the sedan numbers. Ciaz standing a tall second is no brainer. With all the other full grown sedans(Slavia, Virtus, City) costing more than 15 Lakhs, Ciaz is the only option with an automatic costing below 15 Lakhs. The gearbox may be an outdated 4 speed torque converter one and may not be so fast as the DSG and DCT ones but surely is a more dependable one. Add to that the brilliant fuel efficiency that one gets is definitely one of the major contributors to the numbers. On the other hand, the famous maruti service is there to stay. The CNG friendly nature of the engine makes it more suited to everyday use.

As far as the Slavia and Virtus are concerned, after the initial euphoria dies down, people may want to stay away from them due to their service and fuel efficiency. Their 3 cylinder engine will never be able to match the smoothness of the 4 cylinder from Maruti and Honda.

Not sure when Honda will come to terms with reality. Nobody want to buy a brand which holds its nose so high in the air. Its time people get value for their money. They themselves are to blame for their current state. There is a fear among the public that Honda is next in the wings to down shutters on their operations. Somewhere this seems to be true as well. From a market share of 2.6% to 1.5% is already an indicator that not everything is right in the Honda camp. And Honda is not making the right moves as well.

Hyundai may also settle down to 1000-1500 numbers once everyone is done with their excitement.

A couple of possible reasons:-

1) New launches - Maruti has launched a bunch of new cars in the last year (Grand Vitara, Jimny, and Fronx) which have been able to generate impressive demand. However, their production capacity hasn't changed from last year. Hence, they might have had to divert space on the assembly lines from the low-end vehicles with lower margins to the newly launched pricier models.

2) Exports - Maruti Suzuki is also focused on exporting most of these newly launched vehicles to other developing markets to generate additional revenues and beef up margins, like most other OEMs here. This would have further diverted production capacity from existing models.

3) Maintenance shutdowns - June/July is anyways a lean season for car sales based on the last 10-year sales trend. There's a thread on team-bhp highlighting that. So planned preventive maintenance shutdowns may also have been scheduled in June rather than in other months of the year.

You are partially correct. Currently, the Wagon R may be considered expensive for what it offers. However, it stands out as the only entry-level vehicle that combines spaciousness despite its compact size with good fuel efficiency. Moreover, being a Maruti vehicle, it benefits from a widespread service and support across India.

For the majority of people who have a limited budget and prioritize these factors, the Wagon R is likely to be included in their list.

Maruti is the new Taxi brand in India. Although public don't want to call it that way, majority of all Maruti cars are Taxis.

Wagon R and Dzire are favorite taxi cars followed by Ertiga.

Any day, in the evening to night hours, you stay close to any CNG bunk, one can see miles of queue for CNG fuel.

Wagon R, Dzire, Swift, Ertiga, Old Celerio are all Taxis.

I think 1184 is dispatch to dealers and not retail sale, see the "Electric PV Auto Retail for the month of Jun'23" section on this post (June 2023 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis), total MG EV sales is 1114, of which ~500 will be ZS EV, so Comet is ~700. If you then remove ~25% for test drive vehicles, it will come to ~500, that is still decent. Would be interesting to see how this progresses.

Thanks wocanak - When I read retail sale I understand it billing to customers (not billed to dealers by MG) and going by data & your words, 700 units of Comet will be actual sale to customers. It is initial months and I am not very sure if MG will be able to maintain even 700 units of Comet in coming months, specially after launch of Punch EV. Although I personally believe that MG & BYD offers much more sorted EV than Tata (or even Hyundai).

Maruti will maintain final control over the Grand Vitara & its rebadged sibling, just like Toyota will have the final say on the Innova Hycross & its rebadged sibling. This includes the throttling of production.
