Hi Mayank,

Thanks for the response, Dealers in Gujarat are getting Delhi NCR cars and selling here with re-registration, this particular car will be available for inspection in my city tomorrow or day after, since the dealer through which I came across this car is known, I haven’t paid anything till now and will only seal the deal if the papers are clear and found in order.

The car will be at my disposal for 2 days, will get it checked at Toyota ASC (service manager is a friend there), so once I am satisfied then only will consummate the deal.

Re: Curious case of Delhi-NCR used cars | Fly in on a one-way ticket & buy cars for cheap

After last week's floods in Delhi with several cars submerged, be wary of buying cars in Delhi for the next 2-3 years, they may be flood-restored vehicles.

Definitely a caution for buying used cars.

As regards extending the caution to new car buying, well that depends how safe dealer stock yards are located, on how high a ground.

There was no flooding in Delhi of the magnitude of Chandigarh area or the the adjoining parts of Punjab and Haryana, where multiple feet of water had come in in some places and entire ground floors and cars were submerged. Please take mainstream TV news coverage of a place like Delhi with a pinch of salt. Yes, the Yamuna was overflowing. Water came up on to Ring Road and ISBT. But it was nothing like what was being tom tommed on television. Residential areas had their power cut out as a precautionary measure, but they remained relatively unaffected otherwise.

Although the RC status is active, dealer says since it’s 8 year old and done 2 Lakh kms, the RC has been seized and cannot be used in NCR (as the law has Kms capping also)

Can anyone throw light on this?

This along with a few more cars from Delhi NCR has been sourced by a local dealer here and I can inspect the fortuner in couple of days at Ahmedabad.

Used carinfo app to get hold of the Challan numbers, verified the challan numbers on virtual court official website. Turns out that the car has been fined multiple times recently for pollution and vehicle not fit to ply on road due to high emissions.

It could be possible that, since it’s a 8 year old car, DL traffic police might be checking such random vehicles and then imposing fines. The car has done 1.5+ Lakh kms, so could be emitting higher than required.

Anyways, it will be at my disposal most probably from tomorrow onwards for couple of days. Will evaluate and post accordingly.

There were worse floods in bangalore last year where many socities were submerged and many luxury cars were seen floating or submerged. Owners of rolls royce and other luxury cars were seen evacuating in tractors. So, one should be wary in bangalore too. In Delhi, only the areas which were adjacent to yamuna like ITO, ISBT, Majnu ka tila etc. were flooded. Rest of the delhi was fine. Worse floods were witnessed in chandigarh and punjab where cars kept in houses were submerged. So, such generalisation can be misleading.

Can anyone share how much it would cost to re register an NCR car to Tamilnadu or Kerala? In terms of percentage of road tax and will it be calculated on the purchase price of the used car or the ex showroom price of car when it was new.

First, check in your state about how old a car they will re-register. Many states in India are refusing to re-register any vehicle prior to BS-4. Same for two wheelers.
As a thumb rule, usually re-registration charges in India, excluding brokerage, hovers between 12-15% of the original invoice price of the car. Some states charge higher.

Ya average running for a family can be between 10-12k kms a year. But in most cases when the cars are bought from dealers the odo is tampered. I know people who have bought Innovas from Delhi; when we checked the service history through our trusted SVC; we were 100% sure that these vehicles had done way over what they claim. But then that was a compromise all were ready to make for the price difference.

One of my customer got a call from the previous service centre on next service reminder for 3L kms when the odo was showing 1.29L.

Re: Curious case of Delhi-NCR used cars | Fly in on a one-way ticket & buy cars for cheap

In my experience, most of these cars which are attractively priced are accidental in varying degrees. These cars are generally covered by a lot of Youtubers on their channels these days apart from being listed on OLX and Cartrade / Carwale.com. The first step is to ask for full Service history even if it comes at a cost of a thousand odd rupees. If Service history is clear, the next step is to get the car scanned at the Authorized Service Centre by spending around 10 to 15 thousand rupees. If the car clears this test as well then, it is worth buying but in my experience, 99% of these attractively priced cars irrespective of them being listed by Delhi sellers or sellers of any other state, would fail the first test of service history itself.

Just to save you some time, in case you're looking to buy from Delhi-
1. You will never get service history from any dealer in Delhi. No matter how big or what chain. Every car with every dealer has the odo rolled back. Even if they give you a service history, be wary and check for the service before last. These guys also get the car serviced after rolling the odo back to get the current reading into the system.

2. As things stand, while the youtube folks may be trying to get eyeballs with sensational videos, there are a lot cars being axed in Delhi ncr, and forcibly so. Accidental and repaired would be a miniscule percent today.

3. Look for individual sellers. Even if you have to sift through olx quikr or even tbhp. If the seller sounds off, ask them about the car. Footbridge that any dealer would be able to offer any insightful or personal details, like trips, or quibbles. People like me, who were selling in distress would rather sell the car than send it to a scrapper. It is heart breaking for any owner, not just an enthusiast. Been there, done that. You'll not only get a better price, but a true car.

You can take advantage of the unfortunate predicament we have been put in, but avoid dealers like the plague, unless you're sure that you can get things checked out.

Re: Curious case of Delhi-NCR used cars | Fly in on a one-way ticket & buy cars for cheap

Been planning to pick up a dirt cheap F30 320d/W204 C200/F10 530d in it's 8th or 9th year from NCR and re-registering at Lucknow. You know, a sub-10L (give or take) weekend "fun" RWD sedan to give company to my Scorpio. The thing that worries me the most is that UP registration is at 10% of the ex-showroom price.
I have no idea on how much extra I would have to cough up for a 2014 530d for registering it here. If someone could give me some guidance, it would be nice.

P.S. I do not mind paying up to 1-1.5L annually for the upkeep and the purchase is still about 1-3 years away as I am still recovering from the Scorpio
P.P.S. Would be very interested if I can get my hands on some 10-11 year old 6 cylinder petrol RWD (F10 523i and W212 E350 come to mind). The car would see muffler removal and remaps

Re: Curious case of Delhi-NCR used cars | Fly in on a one-way ticket & buy cars for cheap

Flight ticket and stay in Delhi (including food and other expenses) > 16K
Fortuner 2013 AT > 5.75 lakh
Ship to Bangalore > 35K
Delhi Bangalore flight > 6K
Bangalore to Kerala drive > 8K
Paying tax and registering in Kerala including KL number > 160K

Total: 800000 lakh
--------------------------------
Really Surprised with the Total price he spend on this car. 8 Lakh for all process is soo good.

I just completed the registration process of my UP registered Fortuner 4x2 MT.

It was run 52K which I could not believe initially. (With all service records verified from Toyota and the car interiors and engine justified the same).
The car had 45% NCB, No accidents, stock parts (Including Tyres GrandTrek came from Toyota at the time of first purchase), no replacements, all functions working properly.

I'm Just sharing the total expenses breakdown.
Car Purchase 1,440,000
Travel Expenses 43,000
Registration 75,569
Service and Tyres 138,600
Grand Total 1,697,169

Travel expenses includes driving the car from Delhi to Bangalore

Registration includes insurance, tax, number booking etc.

Service includes a general service. I asked for a complete check up from Toyota and they insisted on changing the brake pads and front two discs which was on the higher side 50000 rupees. (Changed brake pads and disc since previous owner installed brake pads from outside because he is selling the car and it damaged the disc ). Changed all tyres, polish and interior cleaning etc.

Registration issues in buying a 10+ year old luxury car?

Since the vehicle scrappage policy has come into action we can see fairly low mileage higher age cars being offered for cheap prices, especially those closer to their end of legal life. I want to do a sense check of how lucrative it is to purchase these cars and run them till it is legally/practically possible

For example - 2011-12 F10 BMW 5 series Petrol single owner with ~50k kms is available in the range of 6L to 7L in Delhi
Similarly, 2013-15 Porsche Cayenne single owner with ~50k kms is available for <20L (diesel) and <25L (petrol)

I am keeping the maintenance costs aside for this discussion - this has always been a factor

1. Does it make sense to purchase the car from a different city and transfer to Mumbai. What costs are to be expected for re-registration/transfer etc? Are there any challenges in transferring such cars out of state?
2. What ownership challenges can be expected going forward (non-maintenance)? Do RTO officials/police track down such vehicles and seize the car etc?
3. How easy or difficult is it to extend the car's useable life officially? Upto how long can it be extended if the car is well maintained?
4. Is it feasible to change the body shape to a newer type to hide the car age and run it post the legal limit? Will there be challenges in getting insurance etc? I've seen some dealers offering this service

I basically want to understand if it is possible to buy a 10 year old Porsche Cayenne Diesel for 15L, convert the body to the latest design and enjoy it for 10 more years 😉

Re-registering the vehicle itself is a hectic process. You need to pay tax again, take an NOC etc etc. Apart from that, it is not really worth the effort unless the car you are looking for is a very special one(say a E46 petrol manual). Also, you need to keep in mind that the future for old cars is not promising, as the govt might impose scrapping at any moment.

So in simple words, it is not really worth the effort.

In Tamilnadu, you will be paying (12% Road tax on the original invoice value - 0.25% discount per year) Works out to 2.5% discount for a 10 year old car.
