Chandigarh : No Road Tax on Strong and Plug-In hybrids

We missed this; there will be no Road Tax on Strong and Plug-In hybrids will have Zero Tax, just like Electric vehicles. It sounds very forward thinking to me

According to a notification issued by Chandigarh transport department, road tax will be waived on battery-operated vehicles of all categories, and electric and hybrid vehicles (strong hybrid and plug-in hybrid) from March 18, 2023, to March 17, 2028

This is amazing. Hope other states follow suit, especially MH which has been one of the first movers in making EVs RTO tax free as well as have a 20L RTO tax cut off limit

Do the new hybrids from Maruti and Toyota fall under these categories?

Glad that a local government is showing some foresight. Time for others to follow suit, also some GST concessions as well.

Re: Chandigarh : No Road Tax on Strong and Plug-In hybrids

Does this apply to the likes of the hybrid versions of the Hycross and Hyryders as well? In which case we should expect to see tons of CH-registered Hycrossi and Hyryders whizzing all across the Northern region as far as the NCR!

Very good initiative! I am of the feeling that ICE vehicles can co exist with EVs past this decade too, this will incentivize manufacturers to focus on hybrids and also offer hybrid options in the sub 10 lakh price range which will be loved by mileage conscious buyers, Hope other states follow this strategy soon!

Re: Chandigarh : No Road Tax on Strong and Plug-In hybrids

Does anyone have the exact notification which mentions criteria for “strong hybrid” - this essentially is a marketing term being used by most brands. It is hard to know what qualifies or not?
Does the Mercedes S450 and BMW 740i qualify ? Similarly does the Vellfire or Lexus ES qualify or not? These are all hybrids. Govt ought to have mentioned battery pack size criteria for strong hybrid qualification.

Re: Chandigarh : No Road Tax on Strong and Plug-In hybrids

All Indian states (or central government) should have proposed a version of this tax break in early 2010s and implemented in 2015s to give the auto makers enough time to develop the hybrid cars for India.

Instead Maruti and Mahindra milked whatever the government offered with their mild-hybrids which had miniscule benefits, if any.

And ended up with the babus having a notion that hybrids are farce and need to be taxed maximum.

Good to see authorities have woken up to the fact that hybrids need to be encouraged and not just BEVs.

Anything that can drive certain KM's without engine power. The dealership told me 20 km, but I can't find it on an official document. I will try and update, but I don't think manufacturers can dodge officials this time. The idea is simple, anything that can run on EV power, whether for a short duration or always, will qualify. They should set a minimum ARAI battery mileage and would have done too.

Regarding people flocking to Chandigarh for registration, a new one is difficult as you must have address proof. I remember the time in 2016 when there was a ban on Diesel registration in Delhi temporarily. A lot of cars were sold from NCR on Fake addresses. Proper door-to-door Police enquiries were conducted of all such registrations. And registrations were cancelled of many, of course, one can manage such things but not worth the hassle if one does not qualify.

Re: Chandigarh : No Road Tax on Strong and Plug-In hybrids

Terrific move... this is a step in the correct direction. Need larger states to follow suit.

Strong hybrids are ones which can charged independently & not just through regen. So a Hyrcross or Grand vitara should not qualify.

Wouldn't that be a plug-in hybrid? I think Prius qualifies as a strong hybrid elsewhere. Not sure what the UT administration comes up with in their notification.
