May 2023 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

NOTES:

1: Thanks to the team at Auto Punditz for sharing these sales numbers with us!

2: Only cars that sell 500+ units (and thus, the relevant ones) have been included in the gainers & losers chart.

3. These manufacturer-reported sales numbers are factory dispatches to dealerships. They are NOT retail sales figures to end customers.

Maruti:- Marching ahead and all set soon to capture 50% market share. Well done

Honda:- Lost it’s sedan crown to VW and Škoda.

Kia:- Market wants its face lifted Seltos as its volumes are falling

Toyota:- on a dream run with its JV with Maruti paying off well

Jeep:- seems not interested in Indian market or seems to have accepted the defeat

Re: May 2023 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

The swift just doesn't stop selling, does it?

It's a model that was launched in Jan 2018, so it's a 5 and a half year old car now. I believe it's the oldest or the second oldest car that Maruti sells (not sure which came first, the swift or the ignis).

Just 500 units of the Astor. Will MG pack up and leave? Don't think their Comet will get the kind of response they expect either. Their bland portfolio became outdated real fast.

Grand Vitara 9000 units, Hyryder 3100

- Average inventory for PV ranges from 40-45 days

- The PV segment rebounded after a decline in the previous month, driven by improved availability, strong pending orders and robust demand for new launches, contributing to the segment's positive momentum.

- 2W sales were positively influenced by the marriage season & the anticipated changes in FAME subsidies, set to be w.e.f June, which drove higher sales of 2W EVs.

- May showcased an increased penetration of EVs, accounting for 8% of total sales, with 2W contributing 7%, 3W contributing 56%, CV contributing 0.5% and PV contributing 2.5% respectively.

Re: May 2023 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Wow, Tata Motors EV car sales is way ahead of the competition! It's also to be noted that Tata's EV cars sell more than Honda's entire car portfolio in India!

I have a feeling the Mahindra Bolero is being counted in *commercial vehicles* tally (in FADA data). It's clearly also figuring in the dealer dispatch data for *cars*. Hope no double counting here.

Seems figures of Astor (592) and ZS EV is swapped (1397).
FADA electric PV auto retail figures for MG is 437.

Re: May 2023 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Very interesting set of numbers this month. First the EVs-

1. Tata is doing a Fortuner in EVs- has more than 80% market share
2. Also surprising is that the pricey MG ZS is selling 25X more than the cheaper Mahindra XUV400
3. 2W EVs have grown 2.5X Y-o-Y and 80% M-o-M

For the ICE segment-

1. Honda City drops to its lowest levels in quite some time. Are Honda buyers holding back for the Elevate?
2. Must say the Tucson is doing pretty well for itself. It has been beating the Compass consistently past few months, even though that has got to do more with the Compass underperforming.
3. The Meridian is cannabalizing the Compass- the discounts are helping of course.
4. I can't digest 14k Cretas sold on a month, but it is what it is. Has caught the fancy of the Indian buyer.
5. Seltos sales are dropping big time- again buyers holding back for the facelift?
6. Fronx is off to a very good start. I find the design and overall package appealing.
7. The Ciaz is in dire need of a fecelift, and perhaps it is finally time to kill off the Spresso?
8. I am appalled by numbers for the Kwid. It sure deserves better.
9. Crysta+Hycross doing old Crysta level sales. Surprising. What is up with Toyota production, and how will they manage the production for the Maruti Invicto
10. Citroen- what are you doing in India?

Re: May 2023 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

For Toyota, it is mentioned that 7,776 units of "Innova,Hycross" model were sold last month (May-23). I would like to know if it is only for Hycross model, or is it the combined sum of units of Hycross & Innova Crysta models. If combined, then can we have the split up of units sold for each model?

What is happening with City numbers? Don’t think it’s Verna effect alone as Verna numbers are also not great considering it’s a 3 months old model. Infact City is lower than VAG twins.

Maybe it is the 'Elevate' effect?

One reason for this could be the fact that the Honda has rejigged the features on the lower variants of the City facelift; especially the VX variant which was phenomenal value for money (pre-facelift) considering it came with everything the ZX variant had barring leather seats (which you can fit straight out of the showroom as an accessory) and LED headlamps. This is where it really scored over the VAG twins; especially considering that only the high end Topline/Style variants come with all the bells & whistles and more importantly 6 airbags.

City VX vs Virtus Topline 1.0TSI meant the value for money equation was heavily loaded in favor of the City which attracted a substantial chunk of the value conscious junta (which is huge proportion of India's car buyers). This according to my was a big ace up City's sleeve - the lower variants.

Now however, the City has deleted a whole lot many feel good features from the VX variant- 4 speakers instead of 8, that impressive instrument cluster has been swapped for an older analog one, leather wrapped steering wheel/gear knob is gone and so has the Auto IRVM and most importantly - the sunroof.

Pricing of the ZX variant always was and is right up there with the Virtus Topline/Slavia Style 1.0 L TSI. At that pricing, I'd rather go for the VAG twins for their impressive driving dynamics and solid feel. Hence, that equation turns in favor of the VAG twins.
