Mod Note: Our Tata Altroz CNG Review has been taken live at this link. Please continue the discussion over on the new thread. Thanks!

Tata has officially launched the CNG version of the Altroz hatchback in India. The car will be offered with prices starting from Rs. 7,55,400 (ex-showroom).

Tata has offered the Altroz iCNG with six variants: XE, XM+, XM+(S), XZ, XZ+(S) and XZ+O(S). In terms of colour options, customers will be able to select from four choices - Opera Blue, Downtown Red, Arcade Grey and Avenue White.

Tata first showcased the Altroz iCNG at the 2023 Auto Expo. The car comes with an innovative CNG tank solution that retains a usable amount of boot space. The car comes with Tata’s twin-cylinder technology that uses two smaller 30-litre cylinders instead of a single large tank. These are positioned below the cargo area, thereby ensuring a usable boot.

Other features of the Altroz iCNG includes a single ECU with seamless shift from CNG to petrol and vice versa, direct start in CNG mode and CNG specific safety features. These include thermal incident protection, gas leak detection and a micro switch that makes sure the car is switched off when refuelling.

The Altroz iCNG uses the same 1.2-litre, 3-cylinder, naturally aspirated petrol engine from the standard Altroz. While it makes 84 BHP / 113 Nm when running on petrol, the numbers on CNG stand at 76 BHP / 103 Nm.

Other features on the Tata Altroz iCNG include a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system with 4 speakers, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, steering-mounted controls, voice assist, What3Words navigation, central locking, remote keyless entry, electric foldable ORVMs as well as front and rear USB sockets.

Meanwhile, the top-end variant comes with leather seats, Brake Sway Control, a rearview camera with dynamic guideways, auto headlamps, a rear fog lamp, height adjustable front seat belts, an 8-speaker audio system, connected car tech with Remote Vehicle Control through Smartphone, TPMS, automatic climate control with rear AC vents, an air purifier, and a wireless charger. Tata is also offering a sunroof on select variants of the car.

Tata Altroz iCNG XZ Rs. 9,52,900

That looks like a great effort. Specially the usable bootspace addition. CNG cars were almost always restricted to in-city commute due to lack of luggage space. This way people can use it for inter-city runs as well with 'some' luggage. :thumbs up

But no DCA option eh? I thought that's more important than a sunroof. :disappointed

Price difference is close to one lakh as per website. But considering the fact Altroz offers more variants as compared to Baleno and Glanza in CNG as well as some features, I'd say at least in top end variants Altroz is worth it.

Also as per standard Tata practice, we can see the features(new ones like Sunroof and wireless charger) trickle to the Petrol, DCA, iTurbo and Diesel variants in the near future. I personally wish Tata would do this in one go instead of waiting for some time like they did for MY2023 Harrier and Safari.

Also hope to see CNG DCA soon.

Would like to see the racer variant launch with the new TGDI engine with 225Nm of Torque and 125hp.

Surprising to see 6 variants and none that is turbo or automatic. Tata has taken cues from Kia & Hyundai. they could have kept it simple and optimized their pricing.

I really like the "dual cylinder technology", a simple yet so smart implementation to increase boot space.

However, is there any inherent problem of using any form of automatic transmission in CNGs? How come no manufacturer has ever offered a CNG AT car? In the aftermarket, some people have fitted CNG kits in their AT cars and seem to be happy with it.

There is no inherent problem, it’s just an initial cost thing. These car companies like to charge Rs 1.5L premium for automatic. Now add that to the 1L they charge for CNG, so 2.5L rupees extra on an 8-9L rupee car becomes hard to get away with.

Rest assured, there are thousands of automatic cars running on aftermarket CNG kits all over the country.

Altroz CNG boot space

Quote:

The big talking point is you don’t have that massive CNG tank killing boot space. Two smaller cylinders leave a usable boot and the boot area is very well finished.

So no spare tyre then? Do CNG cars come with a spare tyre?

Spare tyre is under the car like Innova. I think it's a space saver.

Would this be safe in cases of rear ending? I know the emergency functions are similar across all CNG cars but - at least to the naked eye - these cylinders look closer to the rear bumper and hence more likely to take an impact than the traditional cylinder which sits just behind the rear seat.

If Tata did this packaging with a CNG, then it begs the question why can't the current breed of hybrid cars (City, Hyryder/Grand Vitara) design their boot floors better

There is a perceptible rise in the Altros' boot floor (negative loading lip!)

That is actually a good question. I believe it is due to platform constraints. GV/Hyryder are made in Global C platform. Same with Honda City's platform. If they had considered batteries for hybrid PowerPlant, they would have designed platform accordingly.

Couldn't find the mileage figures on Tata website. Cardekho is mentioning cng avg to be 19.3 km/kg against balenos 30.6 km/kg. If this is true then running cost of altroz cng will be at a disadvantage.

Any official figures available from tata?
