Hi Mods, am not able to find the thread titled "what is your actual service cost", where we all filled in with the true service cost & details.

Zen 2000 Carb with automech exhausts

Highway 19 with out AC
city 16 with out AC
Normal petrol

With AC FE drops drastically, I can actually see the petrol indicator going down.

i have been using a 2004 Indigo LS diesel ( used -- purchased in May 07) and have registered the following FE figures :

Driving -- City - 80% ; highway 20%
City -- Best : 20 ; worst : 16
Highway -- Best :23 ; worst : 18

this is after doing 3 trips of Mumbai-Pune; Kalyan-Pune and a driving of 50kms to and from work Mon-Fri in the mad pune traffic.

God pulled off the worst ever mileage in my car last weekend,12 kmpl. Most of it was highway driving.

Needless to say it was raining cats and dogs and AC was on all the time.

Yeah, thats right, its not a typo. I have been too careless & too busy to get the car checked.
Better figures now.

Petrol : 11 Kmpl (City)
LPG : 9.5 Kmpl (City)

Only way to improve on this would be to change my driving style. I am happy with this.
cheers

Where I come from we talk about fuel consumption.

Is it some sort of national optimism that leads to it being referred to here, in India, as fuel efficiency?

No, it is not optimism or pessimism....We ARE actually discussing Fuel Efficiency here and not Fuel Consumption...becoz the units of measurement here are Km per Litre ..which is efficiency while the units of Fuel Consumption would have been the reverse i.e. Litres per Km (just imagine saying "...my car has a fuel consumption of 0.0667 Lt/ km!")
Hope it clarifies your confusion between efficiency and consumption
