I was getting lower efficiency in my 4 year old Brio MT. Went for a 10 km ride with Honda service guy. Car returned 16 kmpl. I guess I should rev her little less. Feeling happy that car doesn't have any injector etc issues.

How much was the FE before this 10 km ride? I can understand that controlling the revs is a tad difficult for enthusiasts, especially with those free-revving Petrol engines like the Brio, Swift or City.

I heard display fuel efficiency figure is not accurate. I am thinking of buying a hatch and looking for fuel efficiency figures.

Even the Fiat India site says the max fuel efficiency for Punto 90HP is 20.5 only.

Diesel 1.3L Active/ Dynamic/ Emotion 21.2 kmpl+
1.3L 90-HP 20.5 kmpl+
Please don't go by the 23 kmpl figure on that post of mine. That was due to very sedate driving at around 80 kmpl. But yes, on varying conditions from Bangalore to chikmagalur and back. Anything more than 20 kmpl requires some real patient driving with the Punto. Achievable, but hard on a regular basis.

I usually get around 19 to 20 kmpl when crushing at the 100kmph mark. And 16-17 kmpl in the city. More than acceptable figures for me considering the heavy build and stability on offer.

It was around 12-12.5 with 2/3 rd of the run being on hjghway. After the test I drove the car for 20 kms in city. Got the tyres etc changed and still got 14.3. I remember my earlier days when the green ECO light mattered to me.

Truth be told - I couldn't believe these #'s after all that bad press for VW last wk .

But the car indeed did return 20 KMPL for a 1000 KM return journey with 700 KM's of H'way and 300 KM's of City measured by the tankful to tankful method at the same gas station

This was less than half of what a Volvo bus fare would have costed me!

Could you please let us know what your average city driving distance is, per day? My Rapid gives me not more than 12.XX in the city. But then, I'm always on climate control set at 22-24 degrees, and my daily commute is less than 15 kms.

What is your Actual Fuel Efficiency?

Vento/rapid 1.6 tdi engines consistently give 19 - 20 kmpl in highway conditions (atleast to 6 members whom I have enquired). In city ,with a sedate and sensible driving style ,one can extract 15- 16 kmpl.
But again, the definition of city varies in many aspects - traffic, temperature , distance.
Sometimes will b2b traffic, sometimes we get slow but steadily moving traffic, sometimes alternate fast movement and halts. So we can't generalise city driving as a whole. Also, different patterns seen in different areas of same city. And all this, only on the traffic aspect ,the other one being driving habits.
And regarding Jetta's FE, proportionally longer drive on highways compared to city gives better efficiency. The 15.5 range I get in city immediately increases to 21 or 22 when I drive just 50 - 70 kms on a highway at 100 to 105 kmph. The overall avg I get after parking is 20.5 kmpl ( tankful estimate).
Suppose if I do the reverse ,the 21.5 figure slowly declines to 18 or 19 from the moment. I enter city traffic and when I park,I end with avg in the range of 17- 17.5 kmpl. FYI,mines a vento 1.6 tdi. 6th gear in my car would've done wonders but!!!

My daily office commute is btwn 20~25 KM's from my home in Harlur Rd. I alternate btwn EGL and Lavelle Rd. My ACC is set at 23 degree C. I start from my home at 07:45 and from my office at 16:45 - these timings also make a difference as I get worse figures whenever I start after 08:00 or 17:15 when the traffic is at its peak.

Even our 1.6L Rapid diesel gives 12.XX Kmpl within the city, Chennai with 100% AC. During it's first service, when I queried the same with the Service Advisor, he commented that it is a 'normal' figure for the car.

To give you some perspective, our Swift 1.3L Petrol used to give nothing more than 10.5 to 11 Kmpl in City, covering the same road in it's 8 years of ownership. But I was pleasantly surprised, when I heard that it gives 14Kmpl in City (Outside of Chennai) from its current owner.

So the traffic density should be playing a major role with our fuel efficiency figures.

Re: What is your Actual Fuel Efficiency?

Did a Pune-Lonavala-Pune plus some run abouts in Pune city.
Tank full to tank full, the GTX returned a princely 10.5, even though the drive was very sedate between 80-100 on the e-way.
185 kms for 17.5 liters of Petrol.

I guess even the 6 cylinder petrols would be faring better on the e-way at those speeds.

Not that I am complaining. The use of the car is reduced dramatically.
And I calculated the FE after a very very long time. Otherwise, it was just going to the pump filling up for 1000-1500 whenever the fuel gauge neared the reserve mark.

In short, for my usage, what FE the car gives has become immaterial for me.

Thanks! Your timings makes it all clear. Most days I get stuck at the traffic mess at Hosa Road junction on the way to office. Even if the figure is decent before that, it comes down once I cross this junction.

Re: What is your Actual Fuel Efficiency?

I do quite a few Mumbai-Pune-Mumbai runs (most weekends). The best I've got on a recent run (from Hinjewadi, Pune to Navi Mumbai) is 22.6 kmpl. Simply mind-boggling but I also sometimes wonder how much error is there on these readings.

The total drive was 135-140 kms, bulk of it is obviously the MPEW. The remainder too does not involve any choc-a-bloc traffic situations, mostly free-flowing. Drive was in D-mode with a little bit of tiptronic manual in the ghat section. The speedo hovered between 80-110 kph most of the trip (especially on the expressway). Yes, you could call it a saintly drive on the potent GT TSI .

The same trip in the reverse direction drops the overall FE to anywhere between 17-18 kmpl, mainly due to the uphill ghat section.

Overall, I'm quite pleased with the FE achieved.
