I don't think it's a pricing issue as such, looking at the cars I spot on the road - the S Class is still more popular than the 7, the GLE over the X5, E Class over the 5 series, etc.

Problem I believe lies with the entry level models - X1 v/s GLA, A Class v/s discounted A4, etc. and of course discounts on other competitors does go a long way as well to fill in the void.

Expecting BMW, and specially Audi’s sales to skyrocket in the coming years. The three pointed star has something thinking to do, and brand value can only take it so far.
It's not the pricing but the departure of old GLC. They couldn't sell any of them because there were none left. Wait for the numbers when the new GLC starts rolling out.

Re: Mercedes, BMW, Audi & other luxury brand sales in 2023

Mercedes, BMW, Audi & other luxury brand sales in 2023-3.png
  • As per the VAHAN portal, which covers registration data for 34 out of 36 states and UT, BMW overtook Mercedes in July, and the lead is maintained till August 15th.
  • This can be attributed to BMW X1 sales being in full swing and the absence of the GLC in Mercedes’s portfolio for some time.
  • FBU (Mexico plant), GLB, and EQB were brought in to bridge the sales gap created by the GLC generation transition and EQC discontinuation.
  • Still, Mercedes has a stronghold in higher-priced products, and BMW X1 and 3 Series derivatives rule the lower segments of the Indian luxury car market.

2023: Indian luxury car market duel

Mercedes, BMW, Audi & other luxury brand sales in 2023-1.png
  • In terms of vehicle registration, BMW continues its narrow lead over Mercedes even in August 2023.
  • Full-fledged Mercedes GLC deliveries may change the scenario in the coming months.
2023 (Jan-Aug): Luxury BEV market

Mercedes, BMW, Audi & other luxury brand sales in 2023-2.png
  • BMW took a massive lead when it came to luxury EV sales in India. BMW’s current India portfolio is composed of all imported (CBU) products: the i4, iX, i7, and Mini Cooper SE.
  • BMW is followed by Volvo with its SKD assembly of the XC 40 Recharge, which carries a very competitive price tag. In fact, EVs now contribute 24% of Volvo India’s vehicle registration.
  • Mercedes has a good order bank for the SKD EQS (born EV platform); however, Mercedes India doesn’t have enough kits to assemble due to global deliveries priority. The Mercedes EQB, primarily based on the ICE platform and imported from Mexico as a stop-gap arrangement, doesn’t have many takers in India.
  • The Audi eTron facelift transition took a toll on its demand. Moreover, eTron cannot brush off the discount-luxury tag image Audi wears in India.
  • Porsche is not far behind Audi, despite having a more expensive offering.
  • The Jaguar BEV is somehow lost.

I’m surprised BMW is not assembling any of its EVs here yet. They should start with the iX and bring the price to 99L to see volumes really pick up. Followed by the i7, it could outsell the 740i if priced closer.

I’m not very sure if the EQS actually has strong demand and kit issues because they have been selling them off via third party auctions and resellers like BBT in near brand new condition for a big discount.
The EQS is a step up from the E but no where as comfortable as rhe S in the rear.

Yes, there is a case for assembly, but most likely, BMW will be waiting for the volumes to pick. Even today, they have iX from the lots they got in March.

i7 On-Road, prices are already the same, like 740 if you factor in the RTO concessions in many states. Add the extra features and 40% depreciation for businesses on the i7, and it's a no-brainer. Real-world range of 400-450 Km takes care of range anxiety.

Right, pretty slow. AMG ones are available for discounts of around 30 Lac, and the assembled ones of MY22 were sold to BBT at discounts. As I mentioned, that car is mainly for self-drive, but most people shopping in that segment like to get driven primarily. i7 keeps a balance; you can go whenever you feel or sit in the rear when tired. That explains why the i7 is sold out for this year at most dealerships.

Is it possible to get a modelwise breakup of sales for these manufacturers ?

I think Audi data comprises of only CBU units, otherwise, it is hard to believe that number of units sold are below 100.

Audi Q3 is currently selling in good numbers, combining with A4 sales the Audi sales should be much more than 79 units.

Re: Mercedes, BMW, Audi & other luxury brand sales in 2023

Is Audi selling only CBUs or are they publishing sales numbers only for CBUs?

If its the former, why have they not restarted production using CKD kits? I remember reading 2-3 years ago that they plan to do so.

Looks like they just sold 300 GLCs in a month because I am sure nobody's buying that EQE. It's totally crazy given how non luxury manufactures aren't able to move their cars costing 30-40% of what a GLC costs on road

I believe sales for the CKD models are clubbed under Skoda Auto Volkswagen India, when the numbers are published.
