January 2023 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

NOTES:

1: Thanks to the team at Auto Punditz for sharing these sales numbers with us!

2: Only cars that sell 500+ units (and thus, the relevant ones) have been included in the gainers & losers chart.

3. These manufacturer-reported sales numbers are factory dispatches to dealerships. They are NOT retail sales figures to end customers.

Re: January 2023 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Here is how the retail stands in Jan.

India Auto Inc retails up 14% in January, all segments other than tractors log double-digit growth.

Passenger Vehicles:

The slackened demand in the entry level market is reflected in the reduced YoY market share of the top two OEMs – Maruti Suzuki and Hyundai. While Maruti Suzuki sees its overall PV share reduce to 44.10% last month from 46% in January 2022, Hyundai also sees its share reduced marginally to 13.46% from 13.60% a year ago.

The growth in the luxury vehicle market is reflected in the 10% YoY increase to 2,768 units (January 2022: 2,520.

Thanks for Sharing!
Alto has sure regained much sales. Is there any information on how many units are of the k10 and 800 individually?

Renault seems to have lost the grounds recently given their slump sales. Their current lineup is mediocre at best. They lack aspirational value.
The competition has moved on but renault doesn't seem to. I wonder how long would they keep going, as the lower segment products do need volumes.

There shouldn't be.! This can be a direct effect of temporary discontinuation of Crysta. One can deduce, this has lead to the best ever in sales of Fortuner also.
No wonder Toyota brought back Crysta diesel in no time.

So Honda Jazz finally goes out of production with 0 dispatches starting 2023.

I hope service and support isn't affected. As its a very well built, reliable & practical vehicle, I have no plans to part ways anytime soon.

What exactly is a personal 3 wheeler? I thought we have only autorickshaws as 3 wheeler passenger vehicles in India?

Re: January 2023 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

For a couple specific vehicle models/makes I have been following, some patterns seem to now be confirmed:

-Tucson has seemingly finally reached its true demand.
-Compass has 'stable' all time lows of sub-500 units despite significant discounts.
-Meridian continues to slide despite significant discounts. Jeep oh my..
-Skoda seems to be doing decent regular numbers and VW as before weaker demand than Skoda.

Re: January 2023 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

The Skoda and Volkswagen numbers are disheartening. I really want to see these brands succeed, and it doesn't look like they will surrender anytime in the near future, but seeing the Slavia fall from 2,257 units in December to 1,413 last month is pretty scary. I hope the sales bounce back this month.
