Budget 2023 | Implications on cars

MODS: Kindly move to an appropriate thread if this is not the right place. Couldn't find other relevant threads.

Budget implications on cars:

Prices go up for:

1. SKD (Semi-knocked-down) route will make cars more expensive (customs dearer by 5%)
2. CBU with less than $40,000 CIF value - both Internal combustion iteration as well as EVs

Can anyone enlighten what cars are there in Indian Market in category 2? I could think of the Octavia

Octavia, Tiguan, Superb, are CKDs. I think even the Kodiaq, Camry, Ioniq 5 are CKDs. <50L there is no CBU. So I guess there is no impact on the price of the car <50L.

Mini Cooper S comes in as a CBU in the Rs 42-47 lacs range. This will just become even more expensive now.

Re: Budget 2023 | Implications on cars

I predict that there'll be a small rise in 2/4 wheeler ownership among the younger crowd due to the changes in the new income tax regime - you pay less taxes compared to the older regime (if you can't claim HRA/ home loan interest) along with the added benefit of not locking your funds in tax saving schemes under Sec 80C + NPS. I bet a small percentage of the beneficiaries in the YOLO gang will definitely buy a set of wheels but I'm not sure how much that'll affect overall sales.

I inquired earlier in the day on the same, whether SKD and CKD(Octavia in your example is a CKD not a CBU) are the same or different categories of car.
I was suggested to read up here - https://www.iveco.com/ckd/en-us/vehi..._products.aspx
It sounds very similar but perhaps SKD and CKD are different categories? in which case cars such as the Tiguan, Octavia, Superb etc. will face no increase in price as they are not 'SKD'.

Would love for someone more knowledgable to clarify on the same : )

Re: Budget 2023 | Implications on cars

I know that the Lexus ES is an SKD (whereas a BMW 5 series is a CKD); everything else in Lexus portfolio is a CBU. Interestingly, Lexus ES prices went up effective 1 Jan 2023, don't know if this means a further price increase is on the cards.

Re: Budget 2023 | Implications on cars

How much will be the impact on the 'on hand' price of these specific categories of vehicles?

Re: Budget 2023 | Implications on cars

BYD Atto 3 is SKD.

They were already facing criticisms regarding the price, and now there will be a further increase.

BYD need to change this to CKD ASAP and this will really turn into an excellent competitor to the ZS EV.

Though on paper it looks like it is 5% hike for SKD and 10% for CKD above 40K, but in reality, it's 3% for SKD since they removed the surcharge, which existed before and 4% for CBU.
