I think I saw the same review but that seems like a BS claim. Nowhere else has it been mentioned otherwise the company would have made sure to mention it in their marketing. Apart from adding more airbags and ISOFIX mounts in the rear seats (and traction control and hill-hold assist, if you consider those "safety" features), I doubt they have changed the platform too much.

The promotion for Grand i10 Nios on Twitter does mention "Safer Structure" in one of the post that I can recall from memory. Moreover, I did visit the showroom out of curiosity to see how is new Nios different from my Grand i10 2018. I don't know if it's in my head or not but I felt like the door of the new Nios had more heft to them compared to my car. But I didn't like the power window switches on the new Nios. I like the one on the regular Grand i10 more.

The doors on mine definitely close with a satisfying thud, and I am generally satisfied with the build quality, but unless the company puts up clear info on how they have altered the structure (if at all) I would take any claims with a pinch of salt.

Claims like the one made in such PR releases https://www.cartoq.com/hyundai-grand-i10-nios-how-it-stands-out-in-its-segment/

With the new Grand i10 NIOS, Hyundai has increased the use of High Strength Steel to make the structure safer than before. The hatchback has also come to be the only car in the segment to offer four airbags as standard across the trim levels. For added safety, customers can also choose the six-airbag version, which no other vehicle in the segment offers.

I hope they test this new model in the upcoming Bharat NCAP test to clearly show how safe it really is.

Do you own the recent facelifted Grand i10 Nios?

I agree, testing it in the upcoming NCAP is necessary, and if it scores well. Hyundai has a star product in its hands. The finesse, quality of interior and features and ultimately good rating would make it in my opinion the best buy in the segment.

Ya I posted about our family's vehicle a few pages before this post.

The quality and refinement of the engine/gearbox is great but fuel economy is just ok. Was hoping I could have got a Tiago EV but I live in an apartment complex with no clarity on charging infrastructure.

. Perhaps with updated airbags and other features it can score 3 but we can only hope as they have made the criteria stricter recently. Assuming BNCAP follows the same protocol I highly doubt it will improve upon the existing score.

My decision of Automatic Hatchback (<Rs 10L): Kwid vs Celerio vs Tiago vs Grand i10 Nios

Hi,

I made my first purchase of Automatic Hatchback, thanks to the inputs I gathered on Team-BHP. So this post is to share my decision making process, hoping it helps others.

Background / User:
My father, who is 80+ years old, has been using a 2011 model of Hyundai i10. It was a second hand purchase. I was looking to get him an automatic instead. Since it is only for local city drive in Chennai/Blore, we were initially considering a second hand. The idea was that he will use the automatic and I will take his manual i10 for my use. Once he stops driving, I would sell the manual and take over the automatic.

When I asked people for inputs, I understood that apart from the budget, another decision making factor would be features. When I applied those filters, I eventually realized a new car may make more sense.

Decision making factors for second hand vs new car:
  • Only Automatic Hatchbacks (we prefer small cars for city drive)
  • Budget: started with ~ 5L for second hand, later increased to <10L for new car
  • Non-negotiable features for my father's use and myself: Reverse camera with guidelines, hill hold assist
  • Others: Automatic - driving experience, resale value, service centers, NCAP safety rating etc
  • I learnt on Team-BHP that for an automatic car that is used for more than 20-30k KM, the clutch plate may need replacement / automatic driving experience may not be as good.

Finally, concluded that for an Automatic car for an elderly user / a novice driver (myself), a new car with is better than second-hand.

Which car?
When I started looking around, I had the following under consideration:
  • Renault Kwid
  • Maruti Celerio
  • Tata Tiago
  • Hyundai Grand i10 Nios

Renault Kwid:
Pros -
1. Really liked the reverse camera with guidelines
2. Look & feel ; more spacious for a small car
Cons -
1. My test-drive experience was not good, the brakes felt very jerky even though the car had clocked only 3000 KM
2. I learnt on this forum (Should I avoid the Renault Kwid Climber AMT?)that Renault Kwid's AMT experience is not good either.
3. Not so good in terms of safety

Maruti Celerio:
Pros:
1. Value for money, uff! The top minus one variant, with some additions like reverse camera, made it a great deal.
2. Sales experience: Maruti offered a great discount and I was tempted by it. Overall sales experience was really good and I actually booked the car by paying a token advance (later , got a refund).
3. Automatic driving experience: Since Maruti Celerio has AGS, rather than AMT, the drive was smooth
4. After-sales service & resale value
5. Subscription option available (I was considering this for a short-term usage and later decided against it)

Cons:
1. Poor NCAP Safety Rating
2. Look & feel - quite basic

Tata Tiago:
Pros:
1. Best NCAP safety rating in this segment

Cons:
1. Service
2. Resale
3. Automatic driving experience not smooth (as per inputs from this thread (Tata Tiago Vs Maruti Ignis Vs Hyundai Grand i10 Nios | City car for my wife))

Hyundai Grand i10 Nios
Pros:
1. Premium look & feel
2. Service
3. Better NCAP safety rating than Maruti Celerio (my next best alternative in the consideration list)
4. Smooth Automatic driving experience (as good as / comparable with Maruti Celerio)
5. Cruise Control available in top minus one variant itself

Cons:
1. Significantly more expensive than Renault / Maruti

Verdict / Decision:
I got my Hyundai Grand i10 Nios Sportz automatic delivered 2 days back. It feels so easy , and casual to drive in this. I'm excited about this purchase and looking forward. I am grateful to this forum for having helped with all the information that influenced my purchase decision. Thank you.

My friend, AGS is Maruti's lingo for AMT

Anyways, hope your Nios serves you well. We have an OG i10 1.2 from 2009, that is still doing duties (though in a different city). It has seen better days, but still somehow serves without any major hiccups.

Maruti's and Hyundai's AMT are indeed leagues ahead of the competition.

Oh, is it? Maruti told me that the mechanism is different and that it was smoother. Maybe I was misled by staff. Thanks for letting me know.

From your short listed choices it was the perfect decision you took. Hyundai Grand i10 AMT is always a winner over the others in that segment. It will surely give you satisfaction over the years for the decision you took.

Wish you and your father many miles and by the way the red color looks hot.

I am an ex-owner of 2015 Celerio AMT. Drove it for 6 years for 50,000+ kms. Absolutely loved my experience, especially how nimble it was in city traffic. I am considering Grand i10 Nios as 2nd car for city driving and this comment made me smile. I don't like the looks of the current Celerio, my old one was classic

Please do share how it is to drive in city conditions with the Grand i10. Does it have good initial pick up? I ruled out Altroz as reviews suggested DCA is sluggish initially.

Thank you! The one I bought is Typhoon silver though The older car my dad has is an i10 2011 model - red car, that looks faded. Even in Maruti showroom when we went for test drive, we were told that red fades and silver is a better option. Hence, went with silver.

On a lighter note, I think, within the first week itself, I got some scratches on it, from bushes / tree twigs. It is not too visible on the silver.

On almost a level road, I found the car rolling back a little bit before moving ahead. The hill hold assist has a lag, I suppose. That is my preliminary observation.

Cruise control though: I did not find it working effectively. When I pressed the Cruise button, the indicator on the dashboard did say "Cruise". But when I took my foot off the pedal, the speed started to drop. This was at >75 kmph. I need to check how to activate cruise control, in case the button per se, does not suffice.

Nice to know that!

Response to your question: I haven't been using the car for city drive yet. I have taken it out in the city only after 9/10 PM, since the traffic is crazy during the day. I did take it on a highway drive yesterday and I quite liked the experience (except I have not figured yet how to activate the cruise control). I hope others who are seasoned drivers, can answer your question about initial pickup.

Same thing happened when I took a test drive of the car. The SA mentioned that you have to press the '-' minus button below the cruise to activate it as seen here below,

As you can see it states SET '-' . Hope this helps .

On a side note, have booked the Asta AMT variant in red color for use as a secondary city beater/office commute car. We already have a Marazzo in the garage for our highway duties.
