My friend's i20 Nline too gives around 8.5 to 9 kmpl in the city, have been driving it for the past 1000 kms. Mileage is definitely not one of its strong point, probably all the turbo petrols in the bumper to bumper traffic.

It appears the Punch, which was launched after the Altroz, is getting the facelift first. No Altroz test mules with the new look sighted yet.

Goes on to show the importance being given to the ever rising SUV segment and the numbers it contributes to Tata's sales.

You are right. Even my cousin's Ecosport EcoBoost averages 9kmpl in city traffic with AC on. Tata petrol's were never fuel efficient. Nexon, Tiago, Altroz, Punch: all average between 9-9.5 kmpl with AC on in city traffic. Heck, even the Nano does not give more than 12-12.5kmpl in city traffic!
Also Tata petrols take a long time to "free-up". After 3-3500 odd kms and an oil change later do Tata petrols finally "bed-in"
In the petrol engine fuel efficiency stakes, the Japs still rule the roost. Nothing to beat the Suzuki's and Honda's. Even the Korean petrols are thirstier then their Jap conterparts.

re: 120 BHP Tata Altroz Racer confirmed for launch. EDIT: Launched at Rs. 9.49 lakh

I came across this video on youtube feed where there seems to be slots on the pillars for side and curtain airbags. I see that this is an one year old video(2022
Nov 6) and also noticed these slots on the latest walkaround videos. However, Altroz still doesn't get side and curtain airbags(while Racer edition is going to get it as announced by Tata earlier). Surprised to see Tata has made the Altroz ready to accommodate side/curtain airbags and they have even shipped with these dummies for an year now, but still not made it to Altroz even when BNCAP is just around. Or may be this is just part sharing with the Racer edition with no plans to provide on the normal line? Not sure.

Additionally I think - with the Altroz they already hit it out of the park. Like it happened in case of 2 other gorgeous hatchbacks - Punto & Polo - a facelift for the Altroz will be the toughest challenge for the design department .

IMO the car really looks excellent and contemporary even today. The best hatchback on sale in the looks category I feel. So I'd not really push for a facelift just yet. In fact the chances of a facelift resulting in a botched up job + removal of existing features are always high.

True. Pasting the Curvv look on the Punch now makes it the ugliest car in the Tata portfolio. It could have been done better. Completely agree with your words, chances of a botched up facelift job are always high.

re: 120 BHP Tata Altroz Racer confirmed for launch. EDIT: Launched at Rs. 9.49 lakh

TML was working on Direct Injection Turbocharged petrol engines from 1.2 to 1.5 litres, after having benchmarked the excellent VW TSi's.

That technology was supposed to filter down to their passenger cars and the beleagured but proven Tiago/Nexon 3-pot, retired.

Looks like that is not happening and TML will be offering the 1.2L, indirect injection turbo petrol from the Nexon to the ALTROZ.

The problem with this engine is, albeit it is a proven unit, it is neither refined nor very smooth or punchy. I hope they have got their fuel mapping right this time around. Power does not flow seamlessly like in the VW TSi's but comes in as a series of "steps" which feels a bit annoying. Another facet of this powertrain is that it has a very high "flywheel effect". Try to execute a high speed, rapid downshift and you'll understand what I mean - as you let go off the accelerator, the engine revolutions take an age to drop and all the fun of slamming in a quick downshift while exactly matching the revs by blipping the throttle just does not work out

The i20 N-line turbo and even the Mahindra XUV 300's direct injection turbo petrol units are more responsive than this TML unit.

Wonder why is Tata doing this, when they know the bar set by the competition is pretty high? Is it because, this is a stop gap measure? Can be. TML did this before too. During the days of the old Tata Safari, the switch from the weak 90Ps indirect injection turbo diesel to a direct injection turbo-diesel came in two phases: first was the Safari 3-litre DiCor. This engine, which weighed a humongous amount, was essentially the Tata 407 DI Turbo engine adapted for passenger car application.

It was purely a stop-gap measure before the DOHC 2.2 litre Variable Valve Timing, (known as 2.2 VTT), turbo-diesel was introduced in the Safari Storme.

The point is: today's customers: the younger lot; will not wait that long. These young millenial netizens are very sure of what is latest and what is not and in the Altroz Racer's case they may not take to this generation old technology, with much favour.

Yes, TML may introduce a direct injection, petrol turbo at a later date - but they run the risk of polarising their potential buyer base.

Anyways, all the best to TML. Something is better than nothing! Hope they keep the gearing short for the first three ratios for some peppy accelration timings.

The ALTROZ was always a lovely car with a wonderful and fluid ride and handling setup. Just needs the "go" to match its "show".

Did they actually benchmark with the TGDI with VW engines? Why not the 2.0L engine also?

Regarding the introduction, I heard from this forum that they ran into some troubles during the development of the engines so they are delayed. The delay is more prominent for the 1.5 TGDI. But if they stick to the introduction with Curvv and Sierra as promised then good. Looking as of now, the TGDI is going to be the last engine to be introduced to the Curvv with EV first then Diesel (no auto though, which I hope they rectify soon as Creta diesel auto has a good chunk of diesel sales as of now. Around 40 percent I believe). Also, an out of thread question, do we have a direct injection CNG engine?

With the Mahindra xuv3xo coming in with all 4 disc in the rear as standard , and for Altroz to be even considered as hot hatch, it needs to have all 4 discs to compete against the n~line , if not for performance , all other aspect’s considering the overall package and vfm

What monstrosity is this? Is this the even the same company that produced the JTP twins? Altroz Boy Racer fits more aptly.

And the worst part about it is they're taking so long to launch an updated ECU version of the same car. I can't see anything more than this. Curious about what will happen to the iTurbo after the launch of this. The Altroz desperately needs a facelift, sad to see Tata giving it stepmother treatment.

What exactly is wrong here ? An orange on grey/ black is an exciting combination. If this were a Polo GT or an Abarth we would be drooling all over it. The Altroz is equally stylish.
