December 2022 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

NOTES:

1: Thanks to the team at Auto Punditz for sharing these sales numbers with us!

2: Only cars that sell 500+ units (and thus, the relevant ones) have been included in the gainers & losers chart.

3. These manufacturer-reported sales numbers are factory dispatches to dealerships. They are NOT retail sales figures to end customers.

Re: December 2022 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

I am a compass owner. I must say I am worried if I made the right choice. Looking at the dwindling sales numbers(even with Meridian added)..

One would expect the manufacturer to do well in order to have peace of mind about after sales and service.

IF ONLY they they handle their after sales and fix some basic quality control.. Guess no point in rooting for a failing brand.

Re: December 2022 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Thanks for sharing , comprehensive and informative as always !

Some observations:
1) Volumes down, Overall and for most Manufacturers. Guess this is the "December effect".
2) Infact they have been falling since Sep'22 , despite long waiting periods on new/select models and easing of the chip shortage. Thoughts ?
3) Inexplicable why/how Manufacturers are unable to scale up production of their new / "in demand" models ? Case in point XUV700 - still sub 6000 units/month for the most part of last year
4) Specific observations by MFGR (in alphabetical order) -
- Citroen - Enough said about how will they sustain with sub 1K volumes ?
- Honda - They need the new SUV and quickly to turn around their fortunes in India
- Hyundai - Facelifts haven't changed fortunes of i20 and Venue - numbers same or lower. Folks here and everywhere say Tucson is a winner . But the numbers don't seem to reflect the same, even by D segment levels. Thoughts ?
- Jeep - same as Citroen above - what's their future ?
- KIA volumes significantly impacted with both Seltos and Sonet under pressure - is it increased awareness about safety or something else ?
- Mahindra - Good to see their new launches hit it out of the park . But somehow unable to translate into significantly higher volumes
- Maruti - while overall volumes may be around similar levels , they have clearly upped their product/ APV mix, which should mean better margins/profitability. GV/Hyryder twins finally scaled Mount 10K - am sure a long way to go
- MG - while they have been facing FDI/expansion constraints, they seem unable to utilize even existing capacities
- Nissan - One trick pony . New SUVs/CBUs like Qashqai will add the halo effect but I doubt add a lot to the topline. Do they have an India focused pipeline?
- Skoda-VW - Improve basic product quality (EPC, AC, steering/wheel alignment, powered windows etc), ASS (8 year ext warranty is good but not credible if they don't honor warranties)
- Tata - clear success story . What's good - pipeline of facelifts , new products - ICE & EV, first mover in EV etc. - What's not - stories of "lemons" , inconsistent quality /ASS experience. They need to fix that.

Re: December 2022 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

This clearly is a skewed market. Despite numbers normalizing, the expensive models are topping the charts, while the reliable cheap cars are much behind in a price sensitive market.

- Alto not in Top 10? The cheapest ultra reliable model is not selling?
- None of Hyundai products in top 10 by volume? Where is I20, which used to be in top 10, a premium hatch?
- Tata's gaining numbers but Maruti is still marching strong, ahead of Tata's.
- Grand Vitara, despite being expensive than Creta is still showing strong numbers. Assuming some production constraints as it also being sold in Toyota showrooms.

I don't think, i have ever seen such skewed domestic market. I have been following this sales threads since TBhp started it.

Many first time car buyers are now opting for compact SUVs instead of the default choice a decade or back ago, which is Alto.

And calibrating this YOY growth chart for the entire industry basis the growth numbers of citreon just flattens out the overall data of the major players of the industry and makes the chart difficult to interpret.

My suggestion would be to calibrate the chart without considering citreon’s numbers and then plot the citreon’s data manually with a remark on top of the bar.

Just my two cents!

The Jeep Compass continues its slide sharply despite discounts on offer. As for Meridian, nothing new was a flop on arrival anyhow.

Although, his months Tucson numbers have surprised me with it's huge dip in sales, can this solely be blamed on supply issues?

Re: December 2022 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

The sales trend clearly shows how Indian market is increasing its budget. Entry level hatchbacks and even premium hatchbacks are being overlooked in favor of sub-compact and compact SUVs.

Maruti remains at top but its total sales is on a downward trend.
Tata again takes the 2nd spot exactly after a year and as usual its starboys are Punch and Nexon.

Hyundai and Kia both desperately need a minimum 4 star safety rated car in 10-20 lakh segment. That said, Seltos and Carens both aren’t bringing numbers and so is the case with Sonet. Hyundai’s namesake facelift of Venue has got likewarm reception. Hope the Koreans realise their mistake soon.

Mahindra should add another assembly plant, they now not only have the product but also Indians are ready to pay over and above for a Mahindra SUV. The latter part shows that they have already won half the battle now they just have to fulfil the orders.

No offence to owners but I feel happy about Jeep losing sales. It’s good market has given them the answer that their haughtiness and not caring about customers won’t get them business no matter what car, legacy, or off-road capability they bring. This ‘we know what’s right’ attitude and taking customers for granted has never worked for any brand in India, it’s high time they accept this.

Nissan has started losing its steam, with namesake display of models recently with no clear timeline for launch makes the matter even worse for them. Thus the question remains how long will they survive on Magnite sales.

Jeep's two main offerings are lifestyle vehicles with zero real world off-road capabilities. So, it is just the legacy.
I haven't driven any of the two but I was shocked watching their abysmal performance in this video.
