If one notices carefully the car has a striking resemblance to the Ferrari 365 GTB/4 a.k.a Dayatona especially from the front. With a little roof chop there and a two-door conversion, and there you have it our very own Desi Dayatona.

The Standard 2000 was displayed in 1986 opposite the Eros Cinema in Mumbai in an exhibition of some international theme or something. I was in PAL R&D (!) then and we went and took some measurements to compare it to the 118NE (!). We had one in R&D for comparison purposes and I conducted a "city fuel consumption test" on it. It gave 4 kms per litre. It was also grossly underpowered. The original engine was a six cylinder unit. The olny decent cue I got from it was the degassing tank. I designed the Padmini S1 degassing tank out of this design, so both look similar. The Standard 2000 degassing tank had a low fluid warning indicator in it, which we did not adapt (!).

Best regards,

Behram Dhabhar

According to a person(cant put his name here) who was on this project, it is supposed to have a powerful engine but the MD didnt liked the idea due to various reasons.
I requested that person to join the forum but he seems to be not interested. I will talk to him again about this thread and to contribute some info, lets see.

BTW, this person was working as Technical GM at one point of his service with standard motors.

I think Standard themselves did it in by putting in such a lousy engine/gbox.

More than PAL and HM, I think MUL would have stronger motivation to bring down STAMPRO (Standard Motor Products of India).

The other 'luxury' cars at that time did not exactly boast of power plants. Actually I am surprised that the standard petrol had 83 Bhp.

The best car i have come across is with an aged couple in chennai, i dont remember what that place is called but its near Anna Nagar.
They had this off white color car..but the rear badge read ROVER 3500.it was in immaculate condition.
The public said they never had kids and hence this car was loved so much.

And the serious competition was from the contessa, which came with four gears initially.Stampro ,was the name i believe of the standard 2000 and it was miles ahead of the conty at that times.

Low mileage was the killer factor

True, but more than the power, the low mileage was the killer factor.

Around similar time frame, the contessa was launched first with an Amby Mark V engine /GBox, it didn't do well : then HM got into the tie-up with Isuzu and plonked the now-famous 1.8L engine/GBox into it, and the Contessa became a best-seller (by current standards of those days) for HM. And it returned a decent mileage also.
