Me too :)........have seen some of them in good condition, with after-market diesels, in Coimbatore long long back (late 80s maybe)
Are you interested in purchases from other states ? and would you mind if it comes with a Isuzu 1800 cc petrol engine/gearbox plonked in, instead of Standard engine?
I can check if you area ok with the above.

How many of these were made? Any chance of getting one in good condition? I really liked the looks of these cars and fancied one with a V8 like the Rover version.

Yeah, it was much ahead of its time & still very very beautiful. I think i first came in 1985/86 just after the M-800 was launched.
If my memory serves right, the price of the car hovered around 2 plus lakhs those days.
After the factory was closed down, the car was back in action in one of the Kamal's Tamil movies in 1989, where an entire song was shot in the Standard Motors premises.:D

Since you are from Bangalore, I've seen one lying around outside Frazer Town Police Station, in fact on the road adjacent to it. If I remember right, it's blue in color. The body seems good, didn't spot any major corrosion and didn't look like it was banged up either. Not sure about the engine though, don't think that matters to you anyways, right?

Yup I think that was the price tag.
The movie was Aboorva sagodharargal (aka Appu Raja in hindi/telugu).
How I wish they had an idea of playing a song in the factory in the 60s or even 70s! :D
I didnt know they shot that song in the factory after the co.'s closure though! How were they allowed to do so as the co. was said to have been under some legal dispute until the factory finally ended up being auctioned off.
Btw, here is some write-up on Standard Motors ('would appreciate a few guesses on who had contributed to much of the info. on this section of the site! :))
Standard Motor Products (India) Standard 2000
anyone who has watched tamil films will remember the song " raja kayya vecha " from the movie " apoorva sahodarargal " ( where Kamal hassan plays a triple role )
the song has most of the scenes taken in a standard2000 factory ( i think ) - full of s2000 all around in various colours..
a treat to watch even today
another great touch in this car which i noticed as a kid was the exhaust pipes..
i think there were twin exhausts and they exited from under the body in a kind of curved way..
does anyone have any pictures?

And (although :OT) Standard 20 vans as well if I recall right!
Hello ,
Here is something available in the local scrap market in August 2007.
As the car was for sale or breaking up , I have not removed the number plate.
The asking price Rs 40,000 , I was not interested , I can pick up cars like this , but somebody has to promise to take them of my hands.

Yeah I remember the song in Appu Raja. Something which went "Raja naam mera". They even had special effects of the body shells of the Vangard and the 2000 transforming into complete cars.
Here is the link to the video of this song :D
Raja kayya Vecha
Many thanks for the link dippy! Uh, reg. Vanguard bodyshells, I think you mean the Van (known as "Micro") :)
Sorry about going OT again......but just looking at these factory premises makes me yearn for a similar scene from the 60s when my beloved Heralds were being assembled at the very place......sighhhhhhhhhh!!!
