re: Kia Syros: The company's third SUV to slot in between the Sonet & Seltos

I booked Exter and then cancelled it. The reason was that it divided opinions, with my family not fully on board with its looks.

I would place this car firmly in this category.

This car is going to divide opinions and I currently I am in 'not too keen' zone.

Those low placed lights (front and back) at the absolute corners will easily be the most replaced part on this car.

Autowallahs and errant bikers have something new and flashy to aim for!

Keep spares handy

I think KIA should price it in Exter's range (Rs 8-13L Ex-showroom) with a nominal premium for the added features. If not, this car will not have many takers.

re: Kia Syros: The company's third SUV to slot in between the Sonet & Seltos

This is a perfect example of features over design.

Dole out a gazillion features, provide oodles of space in a compact form factor - and you may just have a winner in the Indian market!

So what if the design goes out of the window.

I find the design a deal breaker. Boxy, no flowing lines or proportion, so many strange angles, I can go on and on. And no I have tried looking at it from various angles, it's not growing on me. If anything it's the opposite. I find it ugly.

Very much like those boxy cars running around in Japan manufactured exclusively for that market. Strictly functional. Something like this from Toyota - a best seller:

Kia Syros: The company's third SUV to slot in between the Sonet & Seltos-screenshot-20241221-113125.jpg

But there is certainly a huge market for features / space over design in India.

So congrats Kia - you may have a winner if priced competitively.

Dont like Hyundai-KIa look in general but this one has Japanese KEI car feel to the design. Some weirdness around the headlamps as they can’t help themselves but overall is very appealing.

re: Kia Syros: The company's third SUV to slot in between the Sonet & Seltos

The Syros, even after its unveiling, has left many people scratching their heads. We have opinions ranging from it being priced slightly higher than the Exter to it being positioned above the Seltos Kia, for their part, decided to keep the excitement alive by choosing not to reveal the prices — not even the starting price — until February

This is dimensionally slightly larger than a Sonet, far more flexible and spacious at the back, and has the same powertrains as the Sonet. In fact, the Syros doesn't have the entry-level 1.2 NA of the Sonet. And let's not even get started on the features — ADAS Level 2, panoramic sunroof, ventilated back seats, the triple displays — the list is endless for the Syros. Logically, there is no way they are pricing it under a Sonet.

The only argument for it to be positioned under the Sonet is its platform. Kia says the Syros is based on a beefed-up K1 platform. But considering the consensus earlier on Team-BHP was that the K1 can't accommodate larger engines like the 1.5 CRDI, only Hyundai-Kia know what they have done to the K1 now.

As far as I see it, this is a premium offering in a sub-4m package and I will be very surprised if they don't place it above the Sonet.

re: Kia Syros: The company's third SUV to slot in between the Sonet & Seltos

The Syros design is certainly subjective, but the backseat space under the sub 4 meter category is impressive. The interiors are well-designed, though the ventilated seats feel gimmicky as the airflow is limited to the lower part of the seat. Positioned between the Sonet and Seltos, the Syros is likely to attract cross-shopping from potential buyers.

Consider the off-center logo placement as akin to why rings are worn on the ring finger rather than the middle finger.

Touche! I had the same for my better half. It was a great phone, and took a lot to make her let go and switch to touch back then.

On the car- a few quick points:-

  • Yes the car design grows on you! And maybe they can offer a base version without the off looking claddings.
  • I do hope the designers listen and let go of this fancy with growing touch panels. They will soon become a crash hazard if not just the distractions of operating non tactile buttons.
  • The space seems good, in fact recently in a Uber Wagon R, I was surprised how spacious it seemed and the looks stopped to matter as the inside was quite comfortable. Though I still wouldn't go for a WagonR but if Syros looks as good as the pictures it's worth considering as a decent city car.
  • The neat paint schemes and softened corners, as compared to the old boxy design also help make the design ok to live with. Worth a look I think.

Honestly speaking, didn't like the looks or even terming these boxy souped up hatchbacks as SUVs

While reading release document one major point of rear seat ventilation is that it is on thigh only & not on back. I think seat ventilation is required more on back as compared to thigh. Those using ventilated seats do comment on what due you think of only thigh ventilation.

re: Kia Syros: The company's third SUV to slot in between the Sonet & Seltos

No one went gaga over the looks of the WagonR when it was launched in India. But it went on to become one of the most, if not the most sold cars of all time. The reason was its practicality and pricing. No one cares how it looks now, least of all people who own it who make full use of the sheer space that it offers inside.

Hence the resemblance to the WagonR, and probably the Nexon. Might as well emulate what sells rather than the duds.

Kia is offering maxed out interior space in sub 4 meters with tons of features in this vehicle with a USP - that of reclining seats at the rear. We can see the practicality clearly.

Now all that is left to see is the pricing of the different variants and what it packs into their lower and mid variants. If they don't get that right, it may not be the next WagonR in terms of sales.

But if they do, they have another winner in their lineup that will keep selling for a long time to come just like the WagonR.

re: Kia Syros: The company's third SUV to slot in between the Sonet & Seltos

I think it has one of best interiors in sub 4m SUV segment. While the exterior might be polarising, I find it good enough.

However, according to me, the placement of head & tail lights isn't only impractical but it could be a straight deal breaker for many. We seldom see a car on our roads which doesn't have scratches/bends/dents in atleast one of the four corners.

A slight tryst from another fellow car might call for a head/tail light replacement because, as we know: Glass is glass. And, glass breaks.

re: Kia Syros: The company's third SUV to slot in between the Sonet & Seltos

The Syros screams KEI! Quick question: Do the rear seats fold flush to have a ginormous flat boot? If yes then this looks like a winner. Why are they even selling the Sonet? Easy replacement.

re: Kia Syros: The company's third SUV to slot in between the Sonet & Seltos

There appears to be a mildly herd-like migration to the more square/upright stance initiated by the Nissan Cube, Toyota FJ Cruiser and more recently by our own Thar/Roxx. The Kia Syros is the new iteration of this trend.

I'm sure that this example of the FWD small hatch-back/SUV (X-over??) will fit in very well within its segment.

Apart from the busy front and rear quarter areas (front lamp clusters and rear sensors/camera) which - as remarked by most members - are an invitation to scratching/denting disasters, the car seems to be quite in keeping with its other stable-mates. The offering of the DCT in this segment is clear evidence of the proliferation and acceptance of this technology, together with the addition of the ADAS safety feature. Safety is no longer a dirty word.

Once again kudos to the T-BHP team for having put together a lucid and well-packed article.
