re: Kia Syros: The company's third SUV to slot in between the Sonet & Seltos

I have not been as hooked on any of the recent launches as I am on the Syros (including the Mahindra EV twins or Roxx ), I love this! Kylaq has its work cut out now. The only thing missing on Syros is a Headrest for the center passenger at the back, everything else is covered (Hopefully the crash ratings are better this time around), I was always left wanting for a high quality sub 4m car with good back seat space and Kia has answered my prayer, this is most likely our next car in 2 years time when we look to get a replacement for our well kept 16 year old i10.

re: Kia Syros: The company's third SUV to slot in between the Sonet & Seltos

Having had a look at the various YouTube videos on Syros the following are the major pros and cons in my opinion

Pros
  1. Nice simple minimalistic interiors. Kia have tried to bring EV type interiors to an ICE car
  2. The cons of the Sonet has been addressed. The Syros has good under thigh support in the rear and good rear room leg space
  3. Ideal car for a city runabout
  4. Ventilated seats at the rear

Cons
  1. The car seems to be based on the same platform as that of Grand i10 Nios and as a result the structural safety is a big question mark
  2. If this is based on the Grand i10 platform then I don't think this should be priced higher than the Sonet. I have listed this as a Con as all reviewers are saying that this will be priced higher than the Sonet. I don't agree to this pricing.

What I understand is that it is based on the same platform as that of Grand i10 Nios/Exter and as a result I can understand your confusion. Please see my comments above. I don't agree to the reviewers saying that this will be priced higher than the Sonet. If the Syros gets 5 Stars in GNCAP then I am perfectly fine if it's priced higher than the Sonet.

Everything about this car is aimed at city people except the light placement.
Either Kia fully trusts their ADAS to prevent any small nicks on the lights or the people in the design room have never been exposed to peak Indian traffic.

What is the mileage and how is the performance of the 1.0 engine with DCT in Sonet? Is it a reliable engine with no issues?

re: Kia Syros: The company's third SUV to slot in between the Sonet & Seltos

It has been a while since a product in the industry has confused me this much!

Calling this design polarising would be an understatement, while I like the design as it gives Skoda Yeti vibes, I know some people who won’t like it. Also, this presents an opportunity to Kia for providing a proper manual with the 1-litre GDI instead of an iMT, however, the latter is more likely.

The reason I called this confusing is that, although everywhere its mentioned it’ll be positioned above Sonet, there are some big automotive media names calling it an Exter counterpart which is positioned below Venue/Sonet, I’m sure by now you understand my confusion!

1. They specifically mentioned "reinforced K1 platform" during the Syros launch. So there is a chance that this will score better than i10 Nios if tested.

2. Absolutely agree. I still don't see how this can be placed above Sonet with the given features.

Now that the initial excitement is over, here are some of my personal opinions:

Many are appreciating Kia for "giving smashing interior and mazing features in a small car". In my opinion this apreciation is only valid if they 'price it as a small car'. But we all are guessing it's going to cost atleast as costly as Sonet if not more. Some have even predicted the starting price will be more than Sonet. (And Seltos' price defnitely going up). This kind of really good looking interior design can be seen in many Japanese and Korean small/beginner/budget cars. Even some of the Japanese version of our Suzuki cars have this kind of better looking dashboard and buttons.

When they mentioned "a new species of SUV" in the ads, I thought this could be hybrid and hence it's placed above Sonet. But it isn't. And it is built on i10/Exter's platform. So obviously it's Kia's version of Exter with plenty more features. They should've made it even more different from Exter by adding a hybrid powertrain.

Almost every reviewer on YouTube mentioning the risk of having a headlamp/breaklamp on the corners of the vehicle(a major design highlight of the Syros) is going to make a major dent in the sales unless they price it in a droolworthy manner. People are going to realise Sonet is anyday better than this car and my prediction is this will be Kia's least selling model soon after the initial batch is sold.

re: Kia Syros: The company's third SUV to slot in between the Sonet & Seltos

Looking at the exterior design, I get a feeling that Kia had

1. either too much manpower in their styling department, that each one of them got the opportunity to implement one feature of their choice in the final version.
2. or they had severe attrition during the styling phase and some twenty people worked on developing the design from scratch independently.

Either case, it looks like a classic case of "too many cooks spoil the broth". How many funky features can a car have?

The black feature near the hood which gives a feeling that the hood has not been closed properly.
A swelled rear quarter ending abruptly in a vertical line.
Thick black cladding of some random shape on the wheel arch.
Rear tail lamp which has some elements which seem to be added as an afterthought.
The mirror image door glass.
I think the list can go on...

However, the interior looks quite good. I know looks are subjective, but I really felt like expressing this!

re: Kia Syros: The company's third SUV to slot in between the Sonet & Seltos

Went over a lot of first looks and walk arounds of Kia Syros and Overdrive has the most detailed one so far. It was mentioned that the doors feel heavy and closes with a reassuring 'thud'. Hope Kia has really invested in passive safety along with the active safety features they have loaded into this car.

The unusual exteriors aside, the car looks pretty practical. Looks like they have followed the 'Man maximum, machine minimum' philosophy of Honda. Hope the potential customers will appreciate that and the car will find its way to a decent number of homes.

My first thought was that it's very oddly proportioned. Not many would like this design.

re: Kia Syros: The company's third SUV to slot in between the Sonet & Seltos

I wonder where this car will be positioned. Kia should have launched this an EV only. Family customers have option of Carens. Compact Cross-over fans have Sonet. Seltos also doing fairly well. Considering the size and looks, this won't be more premium than Seltos but given the engines, will be placed above Sonet. I don't know whether there is enough space in between Sonet and Seltos. Top end Sonet already cost 19 Lakh and Seltos goes till 25 Lakh. But then I see the panoramic screen/Sunroof and cooling functions on 4 seats which tells me this might come at a premium over Sonet. So 20-21 Lakh on road for Diesel AT? For whom this car is exactly? This is the kind of confusion happens when prices are not revealed.

P.S. Tata should learn a thing or two from Kia about doing interiors right. Piano black on steering and centre console?? Seriously Tata? Kia is sensible and more considerate about Indians than a home grown manufacture. Also Kudos for physical buttons. I dont know why, but these Koreans always gets basics right and then some.

I love this. I would definitely look at this for city use. Tall body frame is perfect for errands.

This may just be the Wagon-R killer.

Can we expect a Hyundai version of this?

Well-proportioned and feature rich sub -4m car, if it can manage the safety rating (at least 4*), then this should do good in numbers.

Nope, sub-4m rule is
1. Car should be less than 4m
2. Petrol engine should be less 1200cc (1.2L) the gst is 28% and cess is 1%
3. Diesel engine should be less than 1500cc (1.5L) then the gst is 28% and the cess is 3%.

So it perfectly fits in the sub 4m rule hence will have lower taxes than Seltos.

Sorry, but I feel this is the worst Kia India design. It looks like a mix of Wagon-R and Punch as many have already mentioned. And those wheels - no words.
