Compact lifestyle SUVs, a segment by Mahindra Thar and Maruti Suzuki's Jimmy, now sees Hyundai/KIa to have a go at it.

Kia’s third SUV for India, codenamed AY, is set to hit the market in 2025; will slot in between the Sonet and Seltos.

The unnamed SUV (internally codenamed AY) will be a grounds-up, sub-four-metre vehicle and will sit between the Seltos and the Sonet in the Kia India line-up. Sources tell us that this SUV will have a tall and boxy design and will most likely have a tough SUV-like presence which will distinguish it from the Seltos and the Sonet which have more of a crossover-ish design.

The AY is also expected to address one of the weaknesses of the Sonet which is poor legroom in the rear which has been compromised in the interests of boot space. The AY with its tall stance is expected to be roomier and more spacious. We are also told that this new SUV will take design inspiration from the Kia Soul, a highly successful model for Kia overseas.

Kia AY SUV will come with ICE as well as EV powertrain options. Its rugged looks are possibly aimed at pulling away potential Thar and Jimny customers. The ICE variants are likely to be powered by a sole 1.0 turbo-petrol engine. They won't come with ‘proper’ 4WD capabilities and will be based on the existing Sonet’s front-wheel-drive running gear. However, it is likely that the higher end EV variants could get an additional electric motor at the rear to give it 4WD capability.

Unlike the other global alliances of Renault-Nissan, Skoda-Volkswagen and Suzuki-Toyota, who have relied on co-badging to keep costs low, Hyundai-Kia have ensured significant differentiation in design, look and feel — with optimum communisation of parts, which has ensured strong traction for both brands in the marketplace.

The Kia Clavis EV will be based on the internal combustion platform modified for EV. Sources tell us that Kia India plans to produce close to 1 lakh units of the AY SUV annually with 80 percent volumes coming from the internal combustion engine-equipped range, with EVs accounting for the remaining. Some of this will also be earmarked for exports.

The Clavis will slot between the Sonet and Seltos in Kia's India line-up, and, to distinguish it from the Sonet, the manufacturer will position it as a lifestyle vehicle with a tougher SUV-like presence and a boxier design. However, it will not get any 4WD tech.

The Clavis is likely to be one of the last major debuts for Kia India for 2024.

If this is sub 4m vehicle then how is it between Sonet and Seltos. It will fall under Sonet/Venue segment correct. Do we have any vehicles with similar concept in India?

Exactly my thought. Hyundai already has Exter below Venue, expect this to be the Exter sibling.

Just like how thar sits between XUV 300 and it's elder siblings.

Sub compact size but with ruggedness and engine power to warrant a high premium (compare the costs between xuv 300 and thar) for the Indian janta who is crazy for the macho looks.

I think this is bigger than Exter so it won't be in same segment and as per article it will be above Sonet hence the confusion on my part.

Thar sits between XUV300 and XUV700 and there is no other vehicle for them in that segment, also it is off-roading vehicle so makes sense as different segment. But in this case it is neither off-roading vehicle nor any difference between the existing products(in terms of length and type). Wouldn't this cannibalize Sonet?

By the looks and position of it, they are considering it as THAR rival, in the offroading segment.

Two views on the upcoming KIA CLAVIS:




- ACI says it is a SUV slotted between Sonet and Seltos

- All other sources speculate it is a Mini SUV, the sibling to Hyundai's EXTER.

it could potentially be smaller than the Kia Sonet and the similarly-sized Kia Stonic available in other markets.

judging from the growing demand for small and sub-compact SUVs in many parts of the world, chances are that the new model will also be offered in emerging markets outside India.

Hardly 15 cms difference between Sonet and Seltos on either side possible. What does Clavis bring to the table? It doesn't have <4 metre tax advantage and will be less spacious than Seltos.

Even though Sonet competes with cars like Nexon and Brezza, it does lag in interior space and width. This car probably fills this gap.

This will also help Kia to experiment new powertrain options like the speculated 1.2 hybrid.
