Strictly speaking AADHAR is not needed for any services which do not attract government subsidy or public welfare schemes.
Unfortunately In reality ill informed people, at the drop of a hat, demand Aadhar for each and every identification requirement!
For vehicle purchases, an acquaintance who works at a fairly senior level in the union government told me, that "unofficially" folks within the income tax department has let out a "friendly" advise to get Aadhar details for vehicle purchases above Rs 10-lakhs ex-showroom price, over and above PAN. Apparently this is to "cross-check" the integrity of the purchaser.

With the recent Supreme Court ruling, which I could remember, spelt out that Aadhaar must not be insisted as the only proof of Identity when other alternate proof's are available, how come this is being enforced upon us as mandatory?

Get yourself a masked Aadhar card. If some one insists on Aadhar submit that. No need to reveal your Aadhar number.

Here in Chandigarh they won't let you register unless you have Aadhar which they verify to check if you have a local Chandigarh address to qualify for a CH plate. Adjacent Punjab and Haryana charge higher road tax so people from those states also try to get a CH address to save some money.

When I booked my 2022 XL6 ( facelifted) through the Maruti website in April 2022 and selected Nexa Kalyani Motors ( JP Nagar sarakki) Bangalore, the next day I got a call to send them a scanned copy of my PAN & Aadhaar copies or come and deliver hard copies self-attested when I asked why the answer I got for use by Nexa / Maruti and RTO.

In Telangana, RTA is using Aadhar number to check for second vehicle. I asked the RTO officer who was verifying my documents for new car registration, and he showed me the software which is searching with Aadhar number to check for any older vehicle in my name.

That's my understanding. That's why I Had posted this earlier in the thread.

Aadhar has shown itself to be not immune from the same issues as PAN had and actually has been shown to have more and severe issues. Like someone else said here, just wait for the koramangala mafia to come up with the next-big-thing that we will be forced to accept by way of "voluntarily mandatory".

They want Aadhar, will a masked Aadhar do? That way, while your ID will be given, Aadhar no won't be given. I always give this (haven't tried at RTO).

AADHAAR is not mandatory for any of the RTO works anywhere in India.

At this moment majority of RTOs are part of VAHAN server and dealers have direct access to VAHAN. In case of online service without visiting the RTO, AADHAAR is mandatory for online verification(think it like e-signature). Dealer would fill up registration details on VAHAN portal and your authenticity would be verified over OTP received by you over your mobile number registered with AADHAAR. It is mostly the dealer' requirement as they do it online now a days with their own interface to VAHAN.
You can very well do it without AADHAAR, but you need some convincing to dealer and also ready to sell out some extra "baksheesh" and extra time as the registration would go offline process (with agents).

There are a few departments at play here. So, producing an Aadhar and Pan becomes mandatory. How would you produce an address proof for the RC to be delivered? While there may be multiple other recognized address proofs, Aadhar is easier for syncing between departments (RTO, IT, etc.). The showrooms do not take more than 2 lakhs in cash as well. The videos where people buy cars using coins has to be fake.

Absolutely correct.
India's income tax laws prohibit cash transactions in excess of Rs 2 lakh for any reason. Even if you receive money from any family member, you must follow this guideline. To limit the usage of cash in high-value transactions, the government, under Section 269ST, prohibits anyone from accepting cash worth more than Rs 2 lakh. This means that in a single day, an individual cannot accept more than Rs 2 lakh in cash even from close relatives.
One cannot accept even a cash gift of more than Rs 2 lakh from a single donor on a single occasion. Those who accept cash in excess of Rs 2 lakh in violation of this clause may face a penalty equivalent to the amount received.

In addition, if you buy a car worth more than 10 lakhs, the dealer is suppose to file 1% TDS against the buyers PAN, which can be claimed during IT filing.

I registered my car in January 2023.now TN RTO requires ration card along with PAN card and Aadhar card. The Aadhaar number was half shaded by the dealer though. Arguing with RTO is treated harsher than arguing with Police in TN. Why risking a small detail for peace of mind when getting a new car?

I bought a car in Bangalore, KA01 registered, in Q4 2022. I only shared masked Aadhar, and 16 digit VID with the dealer/RTO.
PAN was required to map the TCS amount (ex showroom > 10 lakhs) against my tax form.

My Aadhar wasn’t serving as an address proof anyway, since it doesn’t bear a Karnataka address, so a basic affidavit was required.
