re: Should I buy a new car whose roof will be "blackened" by the dealership, and not manufacturer?

Reading the title of the thread, my mind first went 'No, no, no, just no!'

I thought you wanted the entire car repainted because you were probably not getting the colour you wanted. But you seem to just want the roof repainted, haha! This is a routine and easy job. I'd rather you get it wrapped than painted, but that's your choice.

Re: Should I buy a new car whose roof will be "blackened" by the dealership, and not manufacturer?

I was also presented with this option by dealer last year , when deliveries were severly impacted by chip shortage and I had a booking for white and black dual tone. Though I opted to wait for my choice, you may consider wrapping the roof black, if RTO rules are not strict. If you check the ex-showroom prices of single and dual tone variants, there is a difference of 10k and overall on road price difference of 12-15k. If they are offering roof wrap in 10k, it will make no difference and you get an early delivery.

I don't think it will attract the attention from the cops since the dual tone trim is already an offering – worst case, you get pulled up for other reasons and they find out the discrepancy, but that is too pessimistic, I believe.

That said, the only time you may have a challenge is when you plan to sell off the car in the future, where the prospective buyer may not be very convinced with the dual tone not appearing in the RC and feel something amiss.

So, as long as the dealer agrees to help get the dual tone endorsed in the RC which will then translate to the insurance document, this should not be an issue, otherwise as some of our esteemed friends suggested - go for a wrap, else, if you can wait till February, you are at complete peace.

The best decision will come from your heart!

Hello, Mr. Souvik Das, Congratulations on your new booking. If you don't have the urgency of the car you should wait for the car of your choice. You will have little peace of mind and can avoid pushy dealer.

Re: Should I buy a new car whose roof will be "blackened" by the dealership, and not manufacturer?

Interestingly, the VW Taigun 1st Anniversary Edition (Volkswagen Taigun 1st Anniversary Edition : A Close Look) gets a black wrap on the roof - done at dealer level & not by VW India so this shouldn't be a big deal breaker.

Between a paint and a wrap : I would prefer a high quality wrap job rather than touching the factory paint.
If not by the dealer, than you can get it done from outside as well if you feel the quality would be better there. The only advantage of getting it done at the dealer is IF they can get you an updated RC Card showing the same, and of course peace of mind of not having to run around several places.

I highly doubt any dealer service center can achieve the factory level finish. If you must have a blacked out roof I'd recommend you opt for a high quality wrap over a paintjob in order to preserve the original factory paint. This is easily reversible should you get bored of the blacked out roof after a while.

Added benefit: You can remove the wrap a few years later when you need to give the car a mid life refresh.

Also as a general point, keep the car as it is (with a red roof) for a while. When you get bored and feel the itch to change after some time, do the wrap then. It can be a 1 year anniversary treat, for example.

My two cents - I checked the same technically.

1. The rules say that the car should have 60% of the original paint mentioned in the papers.
2. Also, the color on the top will not be mentioned in the RTO registration papers.

I am of the belief that the quality of the finish will not be the same as the factory because they use sophisticated machines and processes in the factory which the dealer does not even come closer to.

Want to try wrap instead in case the top is flat without any sheet metal impressions on the surface?

Re: Should I buy a new car whose roof will be "blackened" by the dealership, and not manufacturer?

I am sorry for coming back to my post so late. But thanks a ton to all of you for the overwhelming and valuable points.

I initially was agreeing to have the roof painted black, but I also learnt from the dealership that the car rc will have the paint mentioned as red, whereas a factory painted dual tone car will have the same mentioned in the rc.
So I was a bit reluctant.
Now after reading all of your replies I have made the decision to keep the original color of the car and will go with a wrap.

One mistake I made in my Original Post, the KIA dealership name is 'Eastern KIA', not Easter KIA, sorry for the typo.

Thanks again for the excellent points you all have put up and helped me to take a decision on my first car. 😃
